it's the most inspiring thing, to see an artist or a person working on a project so right and true for them. I appreciate a lot your commitment through external difficulties, as well as bringing your own voice and talent into climate activism! congratulation on your amazing new zine and thank you so much for sharing the process.
"I'm feeling really excited and inspired and nervous and scared because I'm making something out of nothing, the only direction I have is my own...", so well said, beautifully paced, and presented for anyone wondering what it truly feels like to start in, glean information, collect it, arrange it, draw it out, figure out how you want it to be and implement.
I'm also currently working on a project relating whales and the environment. I'm linking together an Irish folktale about the first harp being made from the rib of a whale, and the marine sound pollution happening off the coast of Scotland due to industrial activity (mainly fishing), and the effect this has on disrupting the sonar function of marine mammals. I'm in the process of building a harp and creating a small publication, and next summer I'll record the plucking of the harp under the water somewhere around the Hebrides (spoiler: it will be very noisy down there)
Wow this project just blew my tiny mind! Well done you Phoebe. Is there anywhere I can sign up/go to keep up to date with your project? I'd love to follow along.
WOw! The whole thing.. the video, the process, the topic... It's just so magical to see you work on this and pour energy into a creative endeavor with such a topic. Congratulations!
My zone arrived last week. I mean to put stories on Instagram. It made me cry seeing how much the whales give, yet they are struggling to thrive here because of us humans. A very informative educational piece of literature. A very well done to you spreading awareness 💞
I understand what you are feeling right now about the state of our planet. It is hard not to get very depressed. It was because of you that I became vegan, and I have not looked back. I see the world from a totally different angle. As a bird photographer I see beauty all around me, and will do what it takes to protect it for future generations.
what a lovely video. bought myself a copy of your zine, i can't wait for it to arrive! you inspire me so much both in the art sector and just the heart you have for the planet and animals both human and non. you're truly a gem
I wish I bought the zine on time. I first watched this video when you released it and I was working on my own personal illustrations and this kept me going. I love the things you do and the way you go about doing them, thanks for being here and giving me breaks from my own insanity.
Congratulations o the zine and also on finding some inspiration again. I love watching bits of your creative process. You're such a talented artist with such a huge heart. (Side note, mobile living is HARD. I travelled for nearly 3 years but my heart and body finally needed to stop and grow roots. I'm not saying this will happen to you, just that I empathise with that feeling of the "freedom" sometimes being hard work in other ways).
Yes, we've been struggling a little bit with it lately, still in the transition stage and with a lot of commitments pulling us in different directions. But we will be taking 3 months to travel and exist without disruption very soon and really looking forward to it!
OMG I can't believe you're making artwork about whales and especially whalefalls!!! I made a series of illustrations of whalefalls in cooperation with marine scientists of the Natural History Museum in Frankfurt, Germany back in 2019! Such a fascinating, complex topic, but there aren't many images or photographs of the whalefall process out there, because of the very hard access in the deep sea, as well as the fact that the decomposing can take even 100 years. Can't wait to see your artwork Holly! Much respect
It's such a fascinating process isn't it. In the end I worked from stills of video footage on TH-cam - because you're right, there's not much! Found some great artwork from different artists of whale falls - maybe I saw some of yours too? Is it online>?
Holly, this was so fantastic to see you posting and creating again! Yay! You have been very much missed. I'm headed over to Etsy now to get my copy. :)
Congrats Holly!! 🥳👏💐 Love seeing your creative process and how you take us along the whole story and art journey. It gave me so many throwbacks when I created my first zine (especially the overwhelm to start drawing haha but also having a great time while doing research). Also, WOW for creating all of this in such a short amount of time!
@@hollyexley you followed the path of excitement. Thank you so much for sharing this with me. 🥲 And so we come full circle, because your zine video was the inspiration for my zine. 💛
I came from your first video about zines, so it was really cool to get to see you design your own! The final product looks gorgeous! Your work is really beautiful. :)
I wish this zine was still available! This was such a beautiful video. I often find myself rushing my creative projects, but your whole process has inspired me to allow myself time to research, plan, and just truly get immersed in it.
I love the idea of making a zine based on an animal and climate crisis that we are facing. I think that I would love to write and illustrate one about sharks because people have a misconception about them (and also furtive haunt) and that's why I would love to talk about sharks, because they are my favourite sea animal 💖
Such a lovely journey, best of luck with your zine, I would love to know more about the technical side of how to upload artwork and how to get it printed as I think it would make a lovely project for my primary class
Holly 😊 I had such an in depth (pardon the pun) dream about a whale fall last night. So random but beautiful. I could think of no better person to mention this random happenstance to... and the need to dig out my Exley Whalebone/Whalefall zine 🐋💙 x
Thank you for sharing, I am a zine fan I watched your previous video too. I am putting together a collage zine and wondering which printing service you used (in UK) I've previously used blurb though I'm looking at others where the paper folds like yours.
This was such a beautiful video, I'm so excited to receive the zine! I'll probably end up putting it in a frame and changing the page layout every so often. Hope you're all doing well ^.^ - Mandy
This is so lovely, Holly! Will you make more copies of this zine, and if so, do you even ship from EU? I'm in Portugal and with the UK status everything gets caught up in customs where they extort large sums from you for even magazines and zines!
On many hectares of land, we grow mangroves. We all enjoy planting trees, including our president. We may just protest about climate change since our nation is a democracy. We are the world's lungs, after all. We keep striving to be the best. Planting is still ongoing. 32 degrees Celsius and 57 percent humidity were the weather conditions at the time this comment was posted. From Indonesia, warm greetings 💙😊
Hello! I have a small number of zines left that I may make available with my next zine / shop launch. So look out for that and sorry you missed out this time!
Okkk so I started watching this only knowing you were making a zine, thinking ‘maybe this will inspire me to create that zine idea I had about cetaphobia (fear of whales which I had growing up but have now grown to love them and fear for them) and then you said whales and now part of me feels I should stop watching in case your ideas influence mine too much or are really similar 😂😂 the dilemma
I watched and I’m so glad!! This was such a great reminder of how key research is in the creative process for me as a way of developing my ideas. I think I’ve been feeling blocked as I’ve felt like i just need to ‘get started’ on ideas - when I think I actually need time to research and gather inspiration. So thank you! Idk if the zine is still available but I will definitely purchase one if it is. And thankfully our visions are very different hehe. The concept of the whale fall is so fascinating!
@@Alice-zs3eh I knew your ideas would be different - there is just so much scope and zines are so personal! Best of luck with your creations, I hope you enjoy. And sadly the zine is no longer available but I may be selling back issues in the future.
