"The pretentious of some people who believe that high art is the only art." This has made me just realise for the first time (and I've been performing G & S for 34 years (!) and have only just taken part in a production of 'Patience') that as well as the aesthetic movement, Gilbert could well have been having a dig at those who turned (and still turn) up their noses at operetta... I love Michael Ball!!
He got in trouble for this particular performance. The Proms that year had a lot of less "classic" content and some people complained bitterly that the standards were "sliding". That's the "stick" they were subjected to, as he mentions in the introduction. It's also why he very deliberately did this piece just to twist the knife a bit. Lol. A very G and S thing to do. As you can imagine, the snotty people didn't like being made fun of, and the complaints got shriller. Delightful!
I first saw "Patience" at about 50 years old and enjoyed Bunthorn, but only recently, at 79, have realized what a role he is. As a 10 year old I played "Koko" in (an edited) school production of "The Mikado" --- apparently chosen for this because of a modest talent plus clear diction. Would that I might have done Bunthorn instead. It would have been a perfect fit for me......in so many ways.... and for many years: ""If this young man expresses himself in terms too deep for me, Why, what a very singularly deep young man this deep young man must be!"
I liked the Australian version too. But I do think Michael altered that coda at the end for the better. And I'm usually hostile to people who mess with melodies .
Michael Ball was excellent singing this particular song from “Patience”. I haven’t heard it for years, but hope to this week at Waterperry Gardens, nr Oxford.
Michael Dimps Ball can sing anything his weight gain was because he had stopped Smoking he's great looking now he was so funny singing this song well done Michael😀😀😀
The proms concerts might look down Michael but look at how quickly ever seat was sold out as soon as it was announced he was doing the proms so this song was perfect for them well done Michael
So... this song shits on standards that are old and refined, yet we celebrate this song because it is old and refined in contrast to our modern culture, which typically shits on all the standards old and refined? Self-awareness: zero.
This song shits on people who *pretend* to only like old and refined culture because it makes them seem "deep" and "cultured". We celebrate this song because it's fucking good. Your awareness of literally *everything*: zero.
The jury is out on this (pun intended). A certain vocal inflection he does was funny in one place. It was not in the 34 other places he did the exact same thing. Basic musicianship lacking, or he would understand this principle. Still, generally entertaining, but never forget that it is a GOOD melody. Without that, we would not be listening to it at this late stage in the failing course of Gentile Christendom.
Frankly he should avoid this kind of music. He's a pop singer and this repertoire requires classical training and shouldn't be vocally amplified. Awful

Wonderful diction. Modern TV needs to learn we want to hear the words clearly. Fred Lawson, Edinburgh
I feel so attacked by 140 year old satire that’s mind boggling lol I must an aesthetic sham

I love the song, but this performance - Michael Ball really sells the satirical fun, and can he ever sing!
There is very little that Micheal can't do, and do it well! His career provides indisputable evidence of his superb and extraordinary talents.
Great facial expression for the character!
Denis Olsen (Australian) is still the best Bunthorn I've ever seen.

I love this song, and his way of rendering it is delightful! Thanks!
Saw Michael in this role at Lincoln Center. He made the show---with camp that preceded his role in Hairspray. Bravo!
This is so much fun! It's so refreshingly different to see Michael Ball doing Bunthorne.
Why has Michael Ball not come to Denmark 🇩🇰 to perform - he is SO clever and adorable, his voice ! Just listen ! 🤗
Yes, he's hilarious and a great sport.
How good is this man omg,was he practicing for Edna ,love him to bits
Unbelievable loved it . Lord what next . Go ahead lm ready.
Wow! Michael! Michael! Michael! 5-minute standing ovation!
Bravo! I love the new coda he added for a bigger finish! G&S would be proud!
How does he remember all these words 😂
i'm so glad that marius pontmercy is still pontmercying on
Wicked piece of satire which still resonates today!
Fabulous diction!

Those lyrics would have wafted right over the heads of most of the audience.
I saw him at Lincoln Centre, he was sublime.
The proms concerts might look down Michael but look at how quickly ever seat was sold out as soon as it was announced he was doing the proms so this song was perfect for them well done Michael
All the postures are very similar to Dennis Olsen's version.
This is awesome
Michael Ball you are so very theatrical 💜 wonderful!
In my view, Michael Ball sings this song better than anyone in the old D'Oyly Carte Jim Selway
I wish this PROM was on DVD
I believe it is on TH-cam now (the whole show)
He's brilliant
Love this song! :D
brilliant xx
I want to see someone on American Idol sing this sometime.
You mean you wish to see a lampoon of aesthetic snobbery to be mistaken by millions as aesthetic snobbery? - a question posed by a former Grosvenor.
Is it just me or does Michael Ball remind you abit of Seth McFarlane's Stewie?
More like Sean Astin, "Rudy," all grown up.= )
He really does
How to vulgarise a masterpiece of a patter song with cheap and stagey antics.
He's a scream
Cudowny! 🥰👏
There is nothing Michael can't sing! He is one of the all time greatest performers. His range is limitless.

I feel like he was just winging, didn't practice
Fat guys got the moves
I prefer the MASCULINE Michael!
Outdated view. I've no time for 'he-men.' Brain over brawn any day.

Michael has a marvellous voice. Stop limiting him.
Goodness he's had plenty of food hasn't he?
Oh grow up.
Try harder to be less moronic than you appear.
