  • Door Bumper Clear and Hailie Deegan try to understand the confusing Texas Motor Speedway All-Star Race format after producer Jason Schultz reads it to the group. Freddie Kraft, TJ Majors and Freddie Kraft question why the race is at Texas, how fans at home are expected to understand what’s happening in the race, and who is making the format decision. Then Freddie suggests what he believes NASCAR should do with the format instead. Plus, Hailie shares her thoughts on the need to get younger fans interested in NASCAR.

SPOT ON DBC!! NASCAR rules for the All Star race is a train wreck into a dumpster fire. As far as bringing fans to the race track I also call spot on. I started watching NASCAR during the playoffs of the 2018 season. I live in Phoenix but haven't been to see a race at the track. The main reason is expense. Why go to the track when I can sit on my patio watch the race and drink beer that doesn't cost 10 bucks a piece. Also, even though I have tried to make a concerted effort to understand the points system I STILL have no clue about that. So there are things that could be a whole lot better. Also spot on about demographics. I am 49. My work buddy that got me into NASCAR is 60. So if they do want a younger crowd they need to find a happy medium to draw those folks in while keeping the older fans happy too.

Nascar is a family sport. Something I started watching with my parents, and something I pass onto my children. When Nascar alienates their original fan base, then it doesn't get passed down through the generations like it used too. The "playoffs" is the biggest reason I hear that old Nascar fans do not watch anymore. And therefore it doesn't get passed on. And track environment is nothing compared to 15 years ago. It used to be an all day or all weekend event, not anymore. It's money money money. And the tradition and fun is lost to some extent. Grateful you jumped in, and I hope you get to see Nascar and what it is supposed to be someday.

@@lost4life084 thank you, and I couldn't agree more. Since I started watching NASCAR I have really gotten into it. I now devour anything I can find about the sport's history. I can see a difference between now and even 10 to 20 years ago. Much less 30 to 40 years ago or more.

These execs in Nascar continue this dumpster fire that they created. Even a fun race can't be enjoyed or understood. It's so so sad for fans and competitors together. What a shame 😔😔

Why do they have to make things so difficult…take the top 30 drivers in points and start eliminating them…1st stage eliminate the bottom 10 that leaves you with 20 cars left…2nd stage eliminate the bottom 10 that leaves you 10 cars left…3rd stage eliminate the bottom 5 that leaves you with 5 cars left…The final stage you’ll have the top 5 cars racing for 5 or 10 laps and you got your winner, easy

On Saturday, have the pit crews of the 16 playoff cars of the last year do a competition for fastest four tire stop tournament style. Winner advances, loser is knocked out. On Sunday, take the 16 playoff drivers from last season, the driver with the most points in the current year that was not in the playoffs last year and one from a fan vote (for example, this year would be Ross Chastain for the points provisional and maybe Chase Briscoe or Tyler Reddick for the fan vote). Eliminate the four slowest in two 25 lap stages and then have a 50 lap shootout for the remaining ten cars with one four tire green flag pit stop. Do not count caution laps in any of the three stages and do not allow pit stops under caution except for damaged vehicles in any stage.

The first NASCAR race ever went to was the 1996 Winston. It was exactly for what was mentioned on DBC….Got to see two races and it was spectacular. Of course five cars transferred in from the open and one of those with Michael Waltrip, who happened to win, but it was an event that I enjoyed.
I have no flipping idea what the hell they’re racing Sunday. if the drivers don’t know what is going on, and the spotters don’t know what’s going on, how the hell are fans supposed to know what the hell is going on?

Kansas is the closest track to me and I really want to see a race there but it is hard to justify going to a race there. If the only cost was the ticket and at track stuff it would be worth it but I would need a hotel and all the hotels in the area jack the prices up for race weekends. It makes what could be a $50 cup race ticket quickly become $500 because of hotel costs. If you want fans to go you need to make it not just worth the ticket cost but also the cost of the whole trip. If track promoters won't do that then if NASCAR owns the track then fire the promoter and find someone who will. If NASCAR doesn't own the track give an ultimatum to do better or lose your race date.

I don't know if y'all on door bumper clear would see this comment. But if you want to make the All-Star race interesting and NASCAR insists that you all travel outside of Charlotte which I really disagree with. Holding it tracks that NASCAR doesn't run anymore. Like for example Rockingham or North wilkesboro. I think that would make for some exciting racing to see who the best driver is by putting them on a track they don't run anymore and no one is familiar with. Or have it alternate tracks on the East Coast between the original NASCAR tracks but I honestly think North wilkesboro would be an awesome track to do the All-Star race at. We all know Dale Earnhardt Jr and his crew got that track freshened up and now they're racing at it so why not.

They should keep the format they ran below in 2021 for the All-Star Race but add eliminations like they had in 2002-03.
After each of the four 15 lap segments the last place car is eliminated. Then after the 30 lap segment the last 4 cars are eliminated leaving 12-14 cars for the final 10 lap dash for the cash.
All-Star Race 100 green flag laps
    Stage 1: 15 laps
    Field randomly inverted from 8th-12th.
    Stage 2: 15 laps
    Entire field inverted.
    Stage 3: 15 laps
    Field randomly inverted from 8th-12th.
    Stage 4: 15 laps
Running order set via average finish of
    the first four stages.
Stage 5: 30 laps, must make a green flag 4 tire
pit stop. Pit Crew with the fastest time
    wins $100k.
Stage 6: 10 laps, winner takes home $1 Million.

I don't understand NASCAR. The point of the Gen 7 car was to save the teams money. OK, but the up front investment was costly because everything from the previous cars except the seat, steering wheel and engine is obsolete. So a great amount of money went into the new equipment and cars.
Then NASCAR moves The Clash from Daytona to LA Coliseum 2400 miles away. Then the All-Star race was at Charlotte now over 1000 miles away in Texas. The cost to tow cross country is one of the most expensive parts of the weekend.
As far as the All-Star race format goes; I think they go to the local bar have a few then make up the rules. What other way can you explain it?

They are making the same mistake the IROC series made. They have small field low lap races at big tracks where passing is hard and usually requires a draft partner. Then they wonder why it is boring.

Let’s be honest…this is NASCAR trying to create 3 heat races while having to include every car in all of them. Then, they’re handcuffed. The end has always been “the feature.” They need the time those 50 laps take to benefit their TV partners at the end of the telecast. They also had to go to Texas for this. Per usual, the venues they’ve invested in are failing to provide good racing so they have to manufacture it. Changing the car will never fix that. That track is gonna be boring as hell if it goes green all 50 & that’s definitely possible. Texas is great. The track isn’t dramatic enough for the TV audience I guess.

NASCAR used comp cautions and Stage cautions strictly for T.V. time outs .
As a life long fan I am over it.
I tume in for the start then tune out until stage 3.
I do not want to watch more commericals than actual racing
Or they show 6 whole green flag laps then go side by side and we totally miss real action on track.
    It sucks.
Start the race and quit tossing in T.V. timeouts .
F1 runs 2 hours with put a single commerical.
    We never miss any action.
But in NASCAR I miss more than I see.
10 laps to go for gods sake 100% of those 10 laps need to be uninterrupted .

NASCAR owns the tracks now...the investment needs to be geared to taking care of the fan first...per Bill France Jr...if the core stakeholder aka individual fan is taken care the rest will fall into place. Driver connectivity is crucial. Technology infusion is key. F1 is sexy and flash and hi-tech. Their drivers all promote a platform to drive awareness to themselves and the sport. The drama of 150+ million dollar budgets creates intrigue and curiosity. I also think, NASCAR should place a mega team operation in key population / commercial markets across the country. Chicago, LA, Miami, Austin, Seattle, Phoenix etc. Develop local / regional affiliations / partnerships with those teams that create year round exposure to the sport and home town favorites when the series comes to their community. For example - Moreno (Angles baseball team owner) / Gordon Motorsports in LA / OC...build a 100,000 square foot shop on the 405 or 10 freeway that becomes an attraction. Circus like, a real race operation but also promote the series. When the series comes to Fontana you have a hometown team to support - a reason to support. Next - lets utilize all the tilt up indoor karting centers to create a true NASCAR little league. All of the K1's and Pole Positions karting centers have dead time that could be used for a little league format. Cost effective registration of $250-$300 dollars...6-10 week season...ages 6-12...teach safety and how to get around an oval. Next, create a market for cities to host and want an all-star race. Once a market is committed / designated NASCAR goes in a year in advance and begin promoting the event locally...host mini races - invest in the local community. Just some thoughts...also...less and less kids are getting their driver's license annually...You guys do a great job.

Yep, we all said last year the only reason they moved the, so called… all star race to what is obviously the worst track on the schedule, solely to try and save the track.
I’ve followed this series since before the races were even carried on tv, and the bald faced ignorance of the leadership of this series is appalling.
If you think anyone other than the tv networks are completely calling the shots…. Think again.
NASCAR has essentially abandoned the fan base it already had, to go after an imaginary fan base that doesn’t exist.
NASCAR has alienated more than half its fan base, by kowtowing to the tv networks, and now they are at the mercy of the tv networks, which have demoted NASCAR to their secondary channels, due to a lack of viewers. Which they helped run off.
    It’s all they have left.
When you take a racing series and make it about everything EXCEPT racing, this is the result.
    Duh
If you want to run a Circus, buy a freakin Elephant.
If your gonna run a racing series, make it about RACING
It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so sad…
And they wonder why sponsors are getting harder and harder to get….

What's so hard to understand about this format?
If NASCAR didn't have to force drivers to compete after they've 75% secured their starting position then they wouldn't have to add more rules to basic formats.

SPOT ON for everything y’all just said. This is, by far, the worst All-Star format they’ve ever had. Hell, even a straight-up single segment 50 lap race would be better than this. All they should be having it at Bowman Grey stadium.

I like the idea of eliminating cars after stages. And not just the all star race. EVERY race and the PLAYOFFS. Expand the playoffs but have drivers compete directly with one another. Eliminate drivers as the playoffs go on. Have head to head racing for who finishes better. Are the Cowboys still playing when the Super Bowl is going on?

The reason people quit going to races in person is because people are tired of getting gouged at the track. Third parties purchase the tickets and charge fans 10x the face value. Then you get charged to park. Then it cost an arm and a leg to rent scanners. Then you have to give the track your first born child for a burger and a coke. It cant be family friendly if it is not affordable by the average family. Big money is what is ruining NASCAR.

How about a segment where the crew chiefs race golf carts around the track. 10 laps, no yellows. Winner's driver gets to start on the pole in the last stage, and one lap up on the rest of the field.
