*FUN FACT: Natural (and even partly snythetic) rubber is made from resin, so it's still correct to call Luffy a rubber man and his fruit the Gomu Gomu No Mi, the awakening just taps into it's natural origin and breaks the rubber down into its more liquid form.*

I love this and I also love the idea of the reverse of the liquid form, solid as amber. if he can melt resin into weapons and harden them into their amber state that would add fun aspects to his fighting, manifesting thousand spears and throwing them as his new Gatling gun. The preservation part of amber is interesting too, we find fossils imbedded in amber. the fruit preserved the relic of the past, Joyboy.

This makes Luffy’s fight with katakuri so much more important. Not only did he see how to use an awakened fruit that’s similar to his, but he also seen the weaknesses. Now that Luffy has awakened he will be insanely adept to using his powers out of the gate.

@@Thermait resin doesn’t mix with sea water. It’ll just bounce off. Even more so than rubber. In his awakened state he should be able to walk across the ocean no problem. He won’t actually ever make contact with the water itself.
Just gonna point this out here, Oda has confirmed in an SBS that Luffy is natural rubber, not artificial. Natural rubber is made of tree resin so yeah it probably is Luffy awakening and his new power being that of Resin, not a different Devil fruit than the Gomu Gomu no mi tho

It can't be a logia of any kind; Luffy can't produce more "rubber", nor can he 'turn off' his devil fruit (which all logia user except blackbeard can do, and blackbeard only can't because his fruit's 'counter' is light, keeping him stuck in a body of solid darkness).
I don't know when Pringles started the thread, but I think it's fair to mention that Yuderon has been speculating the resin thing for over a month before chap. 1043 came out. He already had like 5 videos theorizing about it and, of course, he predicted chap. 1043 being related to "awakening" and "joyboy" by analyzing the number puns too. Just wanted to give him a shoutout, guy's good.

It's been so long that I'm not even sure how to go about finding examples, but there was speculation that Luffy's awakening might involve resin as far back as Impel Down, when awakening was first introduced as a concept. It was a lot more hypothetical back then as we weren't sure if awakening was Zoan-specific, or what non-Zoan awakenings would entail. The fanbase leaned more towards environmental effects with the introduction of Doffy's and Katakuri's awakenings later on, but the potential for resin-based abilities is fairly old speculation that just never gained much traction until recently.
Correct it's Yuderon Theory they're crediting the guy who stole it instead of the one who made it

If you read the fight between Luffy and Dofy (chapter 784) he also comments about Luffy's weird "rubber" abilities, but in more subtle ways that makes you think it's related to the new gear 4th that was introduced in that chapter.

My theory is that wano is so unreachable because the whirlpools are artificially made. Remember the reason arlong wanted nami? To change the sea at a whim, but what if he wasn't the first one with that idea and what if, instead as a method of attack, it was to protect wano from the world government?
One interesting fact about resin: Resins undergo a slow oxidation process in the atmosphere and become dark in color.
These could be associated with the fact that Luffy has to inspire air to enter gear third/fourth which gives him dark hues throughout his body which doesn't happen in gear second.

@@Buggy_D_Yonko Even with images I have seen of the Manga, Gear 3rd never had a darker color previous to the addition of Haki. All of the Dark Colorization comes solely from the Haki, so the speed up increase or heating of Gear 2nd plus Haki (which is why Red Hawk is a thing, extreme heat and friction equals fire)
But never does Gear 3 initially darken Luffy's skin....ever.

Skypiea has always been one of my favorite arcs of all time. It was probably one of the more “pirate” like arc their is in the story.
Adventure, treasure hunting, and mystery combined with creativity of One Piece was probably one of the biggest reasons I binged the series. So it was weird when I found in the community that many didn’t like it. To each their own I guess lol

Can we appreciate that Luffy and Katakuri faced off in the "mirror world"? If Luffy does end up having powers that mimic Katakuri's powers Oda really did flaunt it right in front of us without us noticing. Luffy truly did face off against what he truly is.

When you think about it more, Luffy fighting Katakuri inside the "Mirror World" makes even more sense, and can be another clue Oda-sensei was using as foreshadowing! A mirrors purpose is to cast a reflection, so essentially Katakuri is like a reflection of Luffy, or that idea Oda sensei uses the expression "two sides to the same coin" right?! Oda was basically saying Katakuri & Luffy's Devil Fruit are reflections of each other!

I'm a Sculptor and I make Molds and Cast them to resin. There are indeed resin that hardens chemically when given enough hardener and also there are flexible resin. Resin is also versatile. It takes shapes of the mold and hardens in process. I don't know about organic resin. But so far that is what I know about Industrial resin that im using for my sculptures.

@@donkalzone6671 Industrial/artificial resin I mainly use is redish pink in color. Even the organic ones that comes from trees are mostly red or redish yellow the ones that turned into Amber.

from my knowledge of resin, it seems like it would end up being the everything devil fruit if true. It can burn, harden, melt, bend, break, insulate, flow, stretch, bounce and probably more. and with one piece science, the possibilities for that are endless.
Resin also tends to be used to preserve and fossilize. Joyboy being a representation of the past and the preservation of the Void Century it would naturally make sense the Word Government would fear this fruit and Luffy in turn.
Didnt Oda even say in a Q&A he LOVES that fans hyper analyze his manga to come up with theories? He doesnt read them in fears of influencing outcomes, but it makes him happy to know we do it. Id like to think he throws in hints for the theorists to add an extra layer of fun and exploration to his work.

The whole resin idea makes sense. Luffy not understanding what resin is, so he was told its like rubber and hes just been calling it the rubber fruit all this time would be so Luffy-like. I can't remember if Shanks or crew specifically said the name of the fruit at the beginning of the story, I'd need to check.
Edit: Yeah, in chapter one, Lucky Roo specifically calls it the "gum gum fruit" in the Viz translation.

Other than that, the anime tries to take around 1 chapter of the manga per episode, but this sometimes turns into 1,5 or 2.
Skypiea Arc was my 2nd favorite arc just after the Enes Lobby Arc. The Skypiea Arc just gives off that adventure, discovery, and mystery vibe when I first watched it. Never knew a lot of fans didn't like the arc. Damn...

This makes so much sense. Luffy wanted one of those bubble riders so bad. If he awakened his resin fruit he could take that anywhere and be like Aokiji and his bike. He could also use it on Sunny to coat it on the fly whenever they need it. So the Sunny is basically a submarine like Law's ship now. Plus the Sunny is running on cola right now. Just imagine what Franky and Usopp could do with resin instead. A upgraded Gao Cannon and a Coup de Burst that can shoot them up to the sky islands.
The bubbles only work there though. It has a special climate so they break when you leave the island. That's why they rent a bubblebike instead of buying one

As someone who used to read One Piece fanfic as a teen all the time, I'd also like to point out the fact that Luffy's laughter is depicted as "Shishishi" And as we know, a lot of characters tend to laugh based on the name of their Devil fruit.
And the next chapter will be 44, therefore, "shishi".

Katakuri pointed this out during their fight, it's one panel that seemed irrelevant and a throw away comment. Katakuri punches luffy and is surprised that his armorment haki is hard but still flexes and gets harder. Essentially Luffy had the properties of a non-newtonian fluid rather than solid rubber.
I love that with each video you can see Liam getting scruffier and scruffier as he struggles to figure out what to do without a chapter this week

The trees on Sabaody don't naturally make the resin, Joyboy fought the government there some hundreds of years ago, his awakening was so intense that resin lays in the botton of the sea up to this day and the trees suck it up.
The government had to deal with pirates going to the new world trough the bottom of the sea for hundreds of years because Joyboy did the awakening of resin... Makes sense for them to have problems with the fruit.
Also, Joyboy clearly could talk with the sea kings, he united the seafolk people and made them a nice place to live with the resin bubbles and all. Why do you think they're waiting for him with a nice ship for all this time?

Maybe the past user of this resin devil fruit, presumably Joyboy, used it to move Fishman Island deep into the ocean by giving the Eve tree its resin capabilities. This past Joyboy may have moved the island there to save the people, and his past friend the mermaid princess, but only intended to do it for a short amount of time, and when he was unable to return to move the people back above water, he considered his promise a failure as mentioning in the Poneglyph. Maybe now Luffy will be the one to complete the promise by using his awakened abilities to move the people back up, thus 'destroying' the current Fishman Island.
Okay i was into the Mythical Zoan idea, but thinking about it resin does make a lot of sense, as it seems just one step removed from rubber conceptually

HOWEVER, the govt does not know that death leads to the awakening, ONLY SHANKS AND GOLD ROGER KNEW (maybe rayleigh and crocus too, or any other surviving rogers pirates) which is why shanks approached the gorosei to talk about luffy (to trick them into killing luffy, which will bring back joyboy). it all connects

Resin can be used to make natural rubber, there are literally "Gum trees".
Nowadays most rubber is synthetic, made from oil. But the OG rubber definitely matches with the Resin theory which i fully support after 1043.
Rubber is made from tree sap not tree resin, they aren't the same thing.

I just think the idea of changing Luffy's fruit is weird since he's had 5 6 on his clothes in the covers all the time and 5 6 is go mu when pronounced. Oda doing that to switch it to resin now seems like either a random switch or the author purposefully lying to us earlier.

I think the reason Katakuri changed from a logia to a paramecia is because all the logia we’ve seen so far are “natural” apart from non-canon ones and mochi is man made

I'd argue he's used it in a bunch of ways, not one. There's stretching, sure. But then there's inflating himself to block larger attacks, shifting his shape, blowing into his limbs to make them bigger to strike harder, somehow setting himself ablaze, bouncing around... etcetera.

There was a reason they hid the Gum Gum Fruit in the weakest sea, hidden with a member of a Cipher Pol organization that was only rumored at the time. Think back to Shanks' reaction to Luffy eating it and why Shanks put his life on the line for a kid from a village he was hiding in.

This what I found when I looked up "the properties of rubber." This opened my eyes to the possiblity to the next transformation.
Natural rubber-also known as India or gum rubber-is derived from the milky liquid (i.e., latex) [THIS PART RIGHT HERE] present in the Hevea brasiliensis tree. Some of the material’s key characteristics are high tear and tensile strength, resilience, and resistance to abrasion, friction, extreme temperatures, and water swell. Typical uses include adhesives, flooring and roofing, gloves, insulation, and tires.
This "milky liquid" is the only property of rubber Luffy hasnt displayed and the image of Luffy in 1043 fits that, so it might not even be resin, but latex.
Side note this is probably wrong and a dumb theory: It also says it's used in adhesives, so he could potentially have a Katakuri type of moveset. Katakuri has also used one of Luffys moves against the Black Beard Pirates, so that might've implied that Luffy is going to use one of Katakuris moves in the future. But obvious nobody would think that because Luffy doesnt have something sticky like Mochi, until now
My inner material engineer screams every time people bring up resin, and how it apparently solves everything. Resin isn't quite as simple as they make it out to be, but at the same time... I'm pretty sure real rubber doesn't act like Luffy either up to this point so... XD

Natural resin from trees (at least the resin from needle trees like Pine, Larch, Spruce, etc.) is heavily antibacterial. It can be even more antibacterial than antibiotics!
Trees produce and use it when they are injured, or whenever they need to protect themselves from insects or birds. Throughout history it has been used to impregnate lumber to make it last centuries (in Scandinavia for instance) or was used to make healing-ointments to use on any kinds of inflammations. It also is flammable and used on torches (Luffys Red Hawk). Not sure if Oda really knows about all that…
Anyway, that in addition to Luffys Will-Power explains scientifically very well his resistance against being poisoned.
It also is more or less a symbol for Luffy being the antidote to the sick world of One Piece kickin evil guys butts and freeing the suppressed people.

It does make sense, but Luffy’s powers have always been based on stretching his body to the limit to create an equal but opposite force that made his attacks as powerful as they were, and this ties perfectly with rubber, specially if you think of a rubber band, and so for him to get his awakening out of getting killed makes much sense to me, his biggest power came from the biggest stretch of his physical abilities.

I was just thinking about the resin that the dark king put onto the thousand sunny in order to make it water proof. If luffy can replicate that on himself would that make him immune to the negative effects of devil fruits? Would that be the reason why the world government fears this devil fruit?

I just wanted to point out that while Pringles compiled the theory in a reddit post, as far as I'm aware the one that came up with it is Yuderon, a japanese youtuber. Also (though I dont know japanese and I'm basing myself entirely on dictionaries) another point towards the resin theory is that "Gomu" not only means rubber but it also means gum, and in SBS 8 Oda said that Luffy is natural "Gomu", well natural gum is also known as tree gum, and is made out of resin, so it could be similar to the whole thing with laugh tale where the truth was kind of lost in translation

OH MY GOD it just hit me, when Kaido was hitting Luffy, his resin powers were awakened. He became completely solid, freezing his whole body, including his heart and lungs, hence his voice "stopping." He held his breath by solidifying his lungs and heart as resin! He didn't actually die at all, despite Momo saying his voice disappeared, it disappeared because of his new Resin fruit awakening, which like Amber was able to preserve him!

I am absolutely not an expert, but the bending attacks thing does check out from the very little I know. It's basic logic that liquids can bend and flow, so it makes since that a hardened resin turning into a near-liquid resin to change trajectory and then re-hardening over and over could create a bending attack. This would also explain the "Bounciness" of snakeman, instead of bouncing it's bending over and over upon contact.
And yes, rubber is technically resin so "rubber man" is still correct, he could still have the rubber rubber fruit and have the ability to make resin in my opinion, it's a stretch, but we know that awakenings can change the properties of fruits quite a lot.
Side note: Isn't a logia fruit any naturally occurring thing? If so, why isn't rubber/resin and wax considered logia? The only explanation I can think of off the type of my head is that any "element" that any "naturally occurring" things that can only be extracted by humans and machines aren't considered logia as they're technically not ENTIRELY natural.
Side note #2 and edit: Anyone think that luffy could turn inanimate objects into resin when awakening his fruit? Doffy is the best example of a fruit awakening changing properties both significantly and minorly and allowing the user to transform things into their fruit, unsure of any other fruit can do this or if its just ito ito? If he could, it would be INSANE, as he can turn a city into resin, shape them into fists, and just do a MASS barrage using them. On top of the punching thing you can make virtually anything out of resin, It's a massive stretch to say that he could make sharp resin using this, but, if he could.. Swords, Bullets, Knives, Hands, Arms, Legs, Needles, string-thin resin, buildings, I doubt Oda would drop such an overpowered and versatile thing after so many buffs but it is a possibility.

Look up the dracaena cinnabari tree and its resin. The tree is known as the dragonblood tree and noted as D. Cinnabari. The Root yields GUM resin and can be seen as a cure all medecine and was used for tempering steel. There is a tree going from fishman island up to world gov hq and resin is basically tree blood. Control over that....... would not be good for the world gov.
I mean resin is waterproof and since as you said about the coating in shabody so basically luffy might be able to swim as a coating of resin can be around his body making him able to swim.
I mean theoretically if he’s resin, then one of his key traits would be being insoluble in water, which might mean that when he awakens he loses his weakness to seastone/water.
Likewise, the bubbles that everyone uses to go under water would be completely under his control.
But there’s also a chance that the resin from the OTHER great tree has special properties, and that he’s able to control or emulate them. Resin is likewise an organic substance that can preserve things infinitely… Luffy might be nigh on immortal.

So I believe that Luffy really did die but that sun god Nika saw that he was the first in a long time to truly seek freedom for the world.

Just a thought but if the "awakening", "Resin", and "Tree" theories have any weight, then the importance of the DF could be the ability to create DF's or more like create the means to create DF's because nothing much is really known about how they're made even at this point the info is intentionally vague. Plus the tree and resin connection seems like it is has more to it then just a hint towards the fruits true name. Why else would this DF have such importance? Also thematically if we look at Blackbeards ability to absorb DF's (essentially take away their power) then Luffy holding an ability with the potential to create DF's could make sense (although I don't think this is something he would use it for) also if Joyboy is connected to the fruit, being the one to have created DF's sounds like a fitting role for somebody that important. Just some thoughts and the more I think about it the more things sort of fit but I'm not a theorist so cba mapping it all out but there is more there

Part of it is that Luffy was told by Shanks and friends that it was Gum-Gum Fruit and that it would turn him into rubber, so he didn't know or even think about it doing more than that.
Wait. We know that there are special versions of Zoan fruits, most noticeably Legendary versions. What if there were such special Paramecia or Logia fruits? Specifically, the Sabaody scene refers not just to any kind of resin, but to the resin coming from the Eve tree. And we know there's another unique tree named Adam, and it's been theorized that either one of those could be linked to the Devil Fruits. What if Luffy's fruit had the power to give his body the properties of the resin of Adam/Eve, giving him some sort of connection to the Devil Fruits as a whole? This would be a more interesting reason as to why the World Government is so concerned about this DF in particular, and why its true name had to be censored.

What if Luffy’s awakening allows him to be able to surround himself within a resin bubble (create one like in Sabaody and utilize it with haki). This could potentially allow his devil fruit to be the only devil fruit that allows the user to “float” making it coveted by the world government.
Also, if he has resin abilities, he may be able to interact with the very important trees in some way. Which might be why they fear the awakening.

So I was thinking this too after he started ranting off the words @ 9:43 . What if Luffy is going to destroy fishman island as people know it. Instead he’s going to create a massive resin bubble and lift it to surface and give the fish men people the gift of the sun (sun god). The world government probably would not like this since fishmen are discriminated against and then you have everyone else that is going to be trying to steal mermaids and it’s going to cause a whole mess of problems. Also this could tie into a few other theories that theres something trap below Enies lobby or in the giant whirlpool between the 3 gates. You could even take it a step further and say potentially luffy could coat himself so he can swim/fight underwater which is also a throw back to Shanks saying he didn’t eat a devil fruit because him and his crew “needed to be able to swim”

You didn't even mention the best part about resin, it can encase things and preserve them thounsands of years, becoming amber. So when Luffy started melting and Zunesha said Joy Boy returned their could be a possibility that something that was enclosed in the resin was set free.

This is a big stretch but something that I thought was funny, on Spotify, the new song used for the opening is called "Paint" By I Don't Like Mondays. Where it becomes a stretch is that resin is sometimes used as a binder for pigment, it says here "Resin - the binder to hold the pigment particles together and provide adhesion to the surface painted. Waterborne paints most often use acrylic emulsion polymers as binders." just thought is was something fun to look at.

The fruit was used to divide the oceans making it more easy for the WG to control portions of the world and have control. If luffy wants to he could remove reverse mountain and all other obstacles making the all blue sanji's dream

Maybe shanks stole the gomu gomu no mi back from the marines AFTER the marines stole it from ROGER (why do you think the world government treasured this SPECIFIC fruit out of all of the other fruits???) you think they changed the name of this specific fruit for fun? the govt wanted to take the fruit and lock it away forever for fear of the AWAKENING (aka JOY BOYS return). HOWEVER, the govt does not know that death leads to the awakening, ONLY SHANKS AND GOLD ROGER KNEW (maybe rayleigh and crocus too, or any other surviving rogers pirates) which is why shanks approached the gorosei to talk about luffy (to trick them into killing luffy, which will bring back joyboy). it all connects

Fun little thing I noticed, the "Drums of Liberation" idea might not be too recent... there might be more hints than just what I'm about to say earlier in the series but remember in Sabaody at the slaves auction place? When Rayleigh shows up and released the slaves in the backroom DRUMS were playing as he showed up and finishes in an epic way as they show the fainted celestial dragon.
I’ve always preferred the idea of bubblegum or Luffy, he’d be able to reattach himself if cut, like Katakuri, but that’s not a naturally occurring substance, just like mochi isn’t either.

I personally just had a thought that went like this "what if luffy's fruit true nature is just his fire power combined with his rubber power that results in some sort of melted rubber thing" never thought id actually get a bit close
