There have been a lot of improvements in Leeds since these clips were filmed, but the sad part is the deterioration of Leeds Market. When the shots of Leeds Market were filmed it was a thriving food supplier to possibly half of the people of Leeds. The food stalls were simply fantastic, especially "Butchers Row", a whole corridor of butchers shops, all trying to give the shoppers a good deal. I was actually in Leeds Market two days ago, and it is hard to believe that now there in only ONE butchers shop in the main market. It is so sad. 75% of what is shown on this clip is no longer there. I am SO lucky to have seen our Market when it was possibly the best Market in Yorkshire.

Yes, they have spoiled the market, I loved going shopping at Butchers Row at of the day they would do meat wrap-ups but can't remember how much they were I was only 8 yrs old. Fantastic times in the market indoors and outdoors.

One of the few areas in Leeds I feel pretty uneasy walking through. Feels like it’s been very under funded compared to most of Leeds

I was born and raised in harehills from 1946. Nobody would believe how safe, friendly and quiet it was until well into the 60's ..few cars..2mile walk to school...trams..the betterware man...rag and bone man ..somebody who I always thought shouted "amonia". From a cart and horse. ...the window cleaner who give us chewing gum(otherwise available attached to cards displaying pictures of film stars Rhoda Fleming...sterling heyden. Et Al...)the corner shops serving respectably dressed elderly women one quarter pound of cheese..2 slices of bacon(everybody was respectable weren't they?)...bow_legged and knock -kneed men .question;how did we manage to survive on shopping for small quantities even daily when we only manage now by unloading Hugh quantities into supermarket trolleys? I may have rose coloured specs but I'm looking at a beautiful garden...

The aerial view of Leeds back then looks far better than the eclectic mess it's become today- I really detest those ghastly student flats that encase the city centre like a plague of boils! all the Victorian spires & domes that were once visible from a distance have been devoured by chrome & plastic monstrosities.
I have no sense of pride anymore for the new Leeds - I just cant connect with it- it's all gentrified & the finery is all lathered on the surface, and regarding poverty, the levels of inequality in Leeds are shocking & among the worst in the country and that's nothing to be proud of.

trippy119 - the fact is, all cities change over time. Some changes are positive, some are negative. But change is inevitable. I don’t like everything I see in Leeds but I try to make the best of it. After all where’s better?

    • @trippy2johno280
      @trippy2johno280 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@SeekTruth300 The affluent market towns are far nicer- (Predominantly white ironically)
And the fact is, change never occurs for the benefit of the ordinary man & immigration was inflicted on the people back in 1948 against the wishes of the trade unions & the vast majority of the population-
They did not want immigration but those cunts in parliament let the people down & they continue to do so today with some extraordinary style!
i'll take educated immigrants & change any day of the week, but not on the back of a fucked up 'cheap labour' agenda that was never in anyway beneficiary whatsoever to the working man in this country!
we've been hoodwinked & dumbed down to kingdom come in this country!
Working class Britain is an abandoned wretched shit hole!
      Sink estate/tower block babel,
rampant feral youths everywhere, sewer mouthed slappers, free loaders, unemployment, shit job opportunities , immigrants trudging around like distant, zoned out zombies, litter all over, slums, shoe-box flea pits, overgrown gardens, ghastly foreign take-aways!
Working class Britain is dying on its rear end!
politicians are toxic, the Police are pathetic!
and we can't make decent comedies anymore
      (I WONDER WHY THAT IS?!!)
The UK is just a playground for immigrants & the rich & wealthy now.

trippy119 some interesting points here tbf.
Yes I think many Brits agree that opening our doors to unlimited non skilled labourers from overseas has been a bad idea. It dilutes our culture and disrupts the fabric of our communities.
However, some immigration can be good. Eg doctors etc. It’s just hard to know which ones are the dreggs. It does make me sad when I hear English used as a second language in some areas of West Yorkshire. Or young Pakistani males swaggering around our streets. I just try stick to the nicer areas.
As you said, some parts are still ok. Which surrounding market towns would you say are the nicest?

In my opinion leeds city centre is far better now esp with the massive construction boom currently in the city, its always been ahead of its competition when it comes to development in the cc, currently we have at least 20 cranes in the cc with huge skyscraper buildings going up, the city also has a good balance of new and old better than most other cities. In the next 10 years the city centre should pretty much double in size. Sadly though most other towns and cities in yorkshire and many other parts of england are just becoming immigration shitholes with increases in crime, grooming gangs, murder which inturn decreases house prices and makes quality of life poor, governments were warned!

I do not wish to take away your views on the current state of Leeds, but there will never be another shopping area like the Leeds Market was in the 1940s/50s. Todays "supermarkets" cannot begin to compare with the old Kirkgate Market.
