Something else I've done with our hounds is to buy a larger wire crate and use a divider in it that I move back giving them more room as they grow. One time, I even used one large crate that allowed access through the top with two Installed dividers and four puppies. Always more than one way to skin a fox. 😊

I have been using the large Ruffland kennel for the past few months for travel. Couldn't recommend it more. It fits perfectly in my trunk and it gives me the peace of mind that my 10 month GSP is safest in that kennel during long drives. Also keeps your seats clean!

What’s the dimension for these sizes? Usually they are indicated in inches? 24, 28 etc.

Thanks for the info. Also, it was great to see how active the 16 week old pup was. I have a GSP that is 18w this Monday and very comparable in energy and enthusiasm. Nice to see other dogs the same age to see how they act, what they look like, etc. just to give me, as a first time GSP owner, some confirmation that everything is going right so far.

Beautiful dog. How much bigger will a pointer get? (Never mind - I see the other dog now!)

Hey I’m getting a puppy tomorrow and she’s a lab Shepard mix. Dad is full freed and mom might be a mutt. I work 7-5 but will be home most days for lunch 12-1 so should I creat train in the morning before lunch and then again after lunch? Or second half of day outside on porch? Or other suggestions? Thanks

You totally do not have to listen to me but I am working towards being a dog trainer. I would do crate the dog before and after your lunch break yes. A lot of people overestimate the time a puppy sleeps but they should actually be sleeping 16-20 hours a day. 5 hours is a long time for a puppy to go without a potty break though. Is there any way you could get a neighbor to take the puppy potty in the morning? You could have them do a few lures (with food) into a sit and heel position for like 15 minutes and the puppy will be exhausted. Have fun!!!

At what point if ever do you no longer need your puppy/dog to sleep in the crate and what does that process look like?

YAWA Question: Do you think a GSP could make a good service dog for someone with PTSD and panic disorder? The dog's main tasks would be alerting to spikes in anxiety, performing deep pressure therapy, crowd control as well as high levels of obedience, and tons of socialization. What would be the cons of keeping this breed in a non-hunting home? I know they're not the obvious choice for service dog work, but I've loved the breed since I was a kid, and don't want to buy one for this work if it wouldn't be a good fit.

I wouldn't recommend the German shorthair for service work. It is a sporting breed with lots of energy and stamina. But I have seen service german shorthairs before so who is to say it can't happen

    • @enarcmcfly

OP, did you pick a breed? I don't work a GSP but a friend of mine who's got a way more talented SD than I do works a GSP and is now training her GSP show puppy to take over for her SD when he retires.
She keeps them well worked in birding and dock diving etc... So my interpretation of that is that she's meeting their hunting drives so that they're well exercised and able to focus on their jobs or even just chill when it's a several days in bed kind of week.
      Hope that helps!

    • @Salix1505
      @Salix1505 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@enarcmcfly I decided on a Moyen (medium) Poodle. The size isn’t recognized by the AKC yet so technically she’s a small Standard, but the puppy I picked is the perfect dog for me. She’s medium energy, somewhat reserved with strangers, but very loving with me and my family. Even at 10 months old she’s already alerting to my anxiety like I trained her to do, and checks in on me when I do things around the house that trigger my anxiety. She has a little bit of an independent streak so playing with toys on her own if I’m in too much pain to play with her isn’t a problem.
She isn’t going to get as big as I had hoped, she was the smallest puppy in the litter, but I actually really like her smaller size. She’s topped off at 15.5 inches at the shoulder and is 21.4 pounds, but needs to gain more muscle as she grows.
I’ve definitely fallen in love with the breed and plan on getting a Miniature Poodle for the next SD, which is a little bit smaller than Harlow is, but I think it would be a great fit for my lifestyle and needs.

YAWA question: I got my first shorthair about 2 months ago. She is 4 months old and we have been working a ton on obedience training. Recently we have started collar conditioning to recall and her “kennel” (dog bed) thanks to y’all’s videos🤗 she is just about ready to start her bird/gunfire introduction and some more field type training. i have been thinking about becoming a NAVHDA member but I am very intimidated. (I live in Kansas btw) I don’t really know what I’m doing as this is my first upland dog and don’t want to look stupid😂. I guess my question is what should I do to get started in NAVHDA and what kind of monthly training and activities would I have the opportunity to be involved with?

I have a 15 month old gsp she is 64 pounds and we want a crate to crate her at home while we are at work. Would the XL be better for that or would the Large size be enough space for her for about 6 hours while we are working? She’s had a tough time with the wire crate and I want to get something that more so feels like a den! Thanks for any suggestions you may have!

Get a crate with a divider that is bigger than you need. Just make it smaller with dividers. when you figure out how big it will be you can get a better one
