From the first few notes it was obvious that this would by truly marvelous music. Thank you for sharing it! And continuing to create a music most beautiful and ecstatic, each band exquisite.
From 56:43 you meet MOGOLLAR, an Anatolian rock band leaded by Cahit Berkay. He has such a great discography since 70s. The instrument he is playing is called "Baglama", a traditional Turkish instrument, and he is great to blend locak music with western rock. Most of the rhythms he used are not 4/4 but 5/8, 9/8 ... that is the beauty of this music. Thank you Mogollar. Serhat on keyboards, is a dear friend from college, we used to play jams in the music room 🙋🏼♂️
In their quieter moments, before the generic beat came in, Islandman reminded me of Pink Floyd live at pompei but we really could have been anywhere that the fingers of ethnic ambient music have reached once the drum machine started. I liked the Baba Zula set very much. The little I know of Turkish folk music limits my ability to judge their authenticity but the use of traditional instruments and impassioned playing made a very convincing argument for a connection with past traditions. There is a shamanic quality to these performances and although they are using some contemporary tech, they ease the lizstener into and out of its presencce very tastefully. The headliners didn't mean much to me. They sounded like a soft rock band from anywhere with a bit of Saz, although the playing of the Ney melodies on a keyboard was exceptionally skillful, nothing else really touched me.
