The 1970 film "Watermelon Man" starring Godfrey Cambridge , and the 1931 George Schuyler book "Black No More" , already told this story as satire.
    Keep up with the times.

Not every "white man" is the same. Can I call this Pakistani an Arab or Iraqi just based off of his looks?

You totally miss the point. In reality, Dr. Seuss wrote this same thing in a way you might grasp. It actually goes a bit beyond this, but it is the story of the Sneeches - some had stars on their bellies and were considered superior, and others did not. Then a guy comes with a machine that puts stars on everyone's bellies... for a price. Soon all are the same, and the guy offers those who had stars all along, the chance to remove them and be the different and superior sneetches again. They do, and soon the others want their stars removed and then they start wanting stars when everyone has none and after a while no one can tell who had a star or not when it started. Like this book, the idea is what happens when no one knows who's who anymore. In this case the now rich grifter who did all this is run out of town, and the sneeches learn to live as equals.
As this guy said, "white" in this book is about a concept more than a color. He was "white" before 9/11 and suddenly he was not anymore. It happened to my friend Niko, an Indian Muslim who owns the little corner store near me. He was well liked, even sort of loved in our mostly white community - he was one of us. After 9/11 he wasn't anymore to a lot of people. He lost a lot of customers, had some vandalism incidents and heard too many nasty comments. He was the same guy, but now he was a brown Muslim, not one of "us".

@@pdoylemi You are sort of proving my point. If it is wrong to group your friend with people that carried out 9/11 based on his beliefs or how he looks, it is wrong to group all white people together as a group just based on how they look. Not all white people are ignorant and understand that just because a terrorist hails from a certain country and has a belief that billions of people believe in, not everyone with those beliefs are going to be a terrorist. There's a HUGE Indian population in my state and I have friends and store owners that I seen on a daily basis on and after 9/11. Just because you know of a person, doesn't mean every "brown guy" had the same experience and I'm close to New York City. If anything everyone around here was united.
I get where you are coming from and thanks for taking me down memory lane with some Dr. Suess, but you know it and I know it that it would be problematic if the skin color was changed or if certain religions were in the title.

But no one is DOING that here! This book delves into a very serious reality. Arguing that not EVERYONE fits perfectly into the theme is silly.
We are seeing the same sort of thing today with Kamala Harris. She's a "DEI hire"! Why? because she had jobs that used to go to white people and she must have gotten them through means other than ability. Or questioning her racial identity. No one does that with white people, even though most of us have non-white ancestors. Your identity comes from your experience. Obama is a white as he is black genetically, but he lived in the USA and thus he was black. Trevor Noah lived in South Africa and was not black - he was a mixed race crime.
I see your feelings are hurt by a fictional story exploring such matters, but when writing a novel, one does not waste half the time explaining that the theme explored in the fictional world does not necessarily apply to everyone equally in the real world.

Moksin Hamid looks and sounds very white to me, even parts of his beard.
Fighting 80 years against Spain for the independence of the Dutch Republic (1568-1648), we profited of the theocracy and related racism in Spain, Portugal and Spanish Flanders. Many rich immigrants from Spain, Portugal, Flanders and later France did flee to the Freedom in the Dutch Republic. We even still have a Portuguese Synagogue from 1675 in Amsterdam.

As someone who is of mixed race I can tell you whiteness comes and goes. You may feel white but other people are quick to point out I am not. They don't say it to my face as much it is more about the hints they drop and the things they say. So for me it is more about something that takes place in my mind and not just waking up and fiscally looking different.

This is a phenomenal book that forces folks with privilege to look inward, to examine their positions in the world, and what they would do if it was taken from the. How would they contend with it? It is beautifully written and very thought provoking.

Very interesting. Not a professional writer but I wrote a film script called the "Last Race". A futuristic hypothisis of our society where the world's majoriety are all mixed-race with only a few thousand white folks, still in power, have isolated themselves behind a large walled off community-like palace. The story is basically addressing the rise of "white nationalism" I saw occuring back in 2015. The story has a twist though, as the last race is not actually the white race, as the story would have you believe but the multi-racial conversion of mankind where no one is judged by their skin color. They are the "Last Race".
