  • Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed this short video of the LS&I up in northern Michigan. The great sound of these old GE's are fantastic, as they get put through there paces running ore to the docks at Marquette Michigan. Ex-Burlington Northern U30C's and C30-7 team up to get the job done. Video taken in October 2003.
    Video shot with a Sony Digital 8 camcorder.

    the 1970's up to today.

    Hey, Jack! Any more railway footage from the Sault area including Sudbury?

    This too me back, seeing Some U-series locos "dragging" iron ore, in my country's case it was U23Cs.
    I've always wondered about the capacity of those hoppers that are used in the US to haul iron ore they always seemed on the small side compared to the gondolas and hoppers I see here.

    • @chuckabbate5924

      Taconite,iron ore is extremely dense physically hence the shorty type hoppers.

      @@chuckabbate5924 Yeah, they look smaller than the gondolas I'm used to seeing carrying iron ore.

    That blue brake smoke at 10:39 on probably shouldn't be breathed on account of the asbestos.

    Thank you so much Jack !! Remember me playing on the LSI Maple Leaf Track's Train simulator route . One of the first routes made by the team . Love those U-Boat ex BN C-30-7

      I bet that was a neat route on the sim. We were fortunate enough to ride the cab from the scales to the dock and back. I have two videos of that in my collection. Thanks for watching...

      The LS&I had only 4 C30-7s numbered 3071-3074 the rest of the 3000 series are all U30Cs which sound even better 😉

      @@Automcanic It’s that great chuff-chuff sound of GE toasters! On the BNSF by my house near Minneapolis it’s been Dash-9’s for years and when they’re going full-bore upgrade they sound very much like a “beefed-up” U-boat would sound. I grew up next to the Soo Line in the very short heydays of their ten U-30-C’s and remember the chattering Alco-like sound of their 4-stroke/cycle engines.

    October 2003 and those Iron Ore cars are still using Hotbox bearings?

    • @fernandomarques5166
      @fernandomarques5166 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They make roller bearings at fit those axels so they could have been retrofit, I've seen that a lot, a sure way to know is to see if the "journal box" is cut or missing its little door.

    Darn, I'm surprised GE's have enough power to pull a ore train. It must be empty though!!!! 😝🤯 Nice video Friend!

    What is it hauling?

    • @1jackdk
      @1jackdk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It has a load of taconite taken to Partridge siding about a mile behind me, and gets set out for the Wisconsin Central, now the CN.
