Leaders of S. Korea, the Philippines agree to upgrade bilateral ties to new level

Also in Phnom Penh, the South Korean President has met with his counterpart from the Philippines, with whom he discussed cooperation in building nuclear power plants and in the defense industry.

An upgrade of the two countries' 70-year-old bilateral relationship to a new level was the focal point of the meeting between the leaders of South Korea and the Philippines on the sidelines of the ASEAN-related summits in Phnom Penh.
"I hope our two countries, which share the values of democracy and the market economy, expand their cooperation in a variety of fields, including nuclear power plants, the defense industry and related infrastructure, and work together in solidarity for peace and prosperity in the region."
President Yoon Suk-yeol also thanked the Philippines for its contributions during the Korean War, while President Marcos echoed those hopes for further cooperation in light of South Korea's new Indo-Pacific strategy.
"I do believe it is the time that we start to work to elevate our bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. Our newly launched bilateral platforms in science and technology, fisheries cooperation and maritime cooperation all contribute to the deepening of this engagement."
In a readout, Seoul's presidential office said President Yoon welcomed a proposal by the Philippines to cooperate in the resumption of construction at the nuclear power plant in Bataan.
This as the Philippines seeks to diversify its energy sources due to the shift in the country's energy structure triggered by climate change, a process in which it hopes to work with South Korea on nuclear power and green technology.
On top of that, Seoul also seeks to expand cooperation in the Philippines on its plan to build a smart city.
On security, the two leaders both expressed concerns about the recent series of provocations by North Korea, and agreed to work together to bring the regime back to the negotiating table.
President Yoon also thanked the Philippine government for sending its condolences to the Korean people over the deadly Itaewon crowd crush.
The summit was followed by a gala dinner hosted by Cambodia, where world leaders gathered for a friendly meeting.
Among the leaders there were U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, so they naturally exchanged greetings with the South Korean President ahead of their bilaterals and a trilateral on Sunday.
