  • Welcome back to our educational series on progressive metal stamping dies! In this video, Dave Holzer, a Journeyman Tool and Die Maker and the Sales and Marketing Manager at Wisconsin Metal Parts, explores the tooling required for a more complex, higher volume part in production metal stamping using progressive metal stamping dies.
When it comes to progressive stamping dies, Dave covers it all, breaking down the tooling process into clear, understandable steps. Dave covers inserts, die chases, backup plates, pilot piercing, spring load lifters, and more.
This video is a must-watch for anyone involved in the production metal stamping process, from seasoned professionals to those just starting in the industry. Contact our team today for more information about our custom metal stamping solutions.

Thanks for the comments Paul. We need to keep spreading the word. We both know the country would be worse off if we lost our manufacturing skills.

I have personally never seen tooling with this many pilots. Great explanation of prog tooling.

That was a great explanation of the process. Just the right length to be engaging and just the right amount of technical information and jargon. I hope you consider making a few more similar videos about stamping and dies.

Nice clear explanation of the process and visuals. I personally used the Lamina stock guide/lifter system when possible. Strip moves easier and gives better lift to the strip. Bonus, they are good looking too!

This guy knows what he is talking about, well explained! Try & find press tools in Australia now, sold out by the mighty $. I like the US remaining indipendant & not being so reliant on other countries.

Wow those tools must cost a fortune, I cant imagine how many parts that would have to be made to even cover the cost. Beautiful work.

Nice tooling. Similar to the tools I made for windscreen wiper arms and assorted components.

Hello! We also produce stamps. Tell me what steels do you use for pullers?

What are you using for protection? I don't see any steel in or part out detection

Pilot pins and double thickness I would imagine. Probably portable buckle switch at material entry too.

As a designer, I never understood placing hardened inserts into hardened retainers. That screws the Toolmakers down the road. If it doesn't cut, it doesn't need to be hardened.

Thanks for your comments Scott. While your comment is correct in some cases it is not true in all cases. Often a company will dictate it’s own die standards based on years of experience and what works best for their particular situation. For example, in the case of a die chase, a soft block could wear if it comes into contact with the stock strip during the stamping cycle, say you are running stainless. Soft steel can also attract burrs and get debris or shavings pressed into them which could result in the final part being marked unintentionally.
