Finally! It took living outside the country for a decent amount of time in a different society for me to even start recognising these item songs as problematic. That’s how strong the societal conditioning is towards even women in our country for us to not even identify these songs as problematic beyond a certain point. Little do we realise how such songs shape the ideas and mindsets of a whole younger generation
so other paces outside the country like US having legal strip clubs, a whole lot of sexual movies where most women rip their clothes off and them basically being the largest suppliers of adult content, didn't show you how women were looked at ? its always an Indian problem and rest of the world is perfect ? even living in India I can tell item songs are a problem, the fact that you couldn't was just your issue
Beedi jaliyle had a point. It served the song. That was her character. You actually see in the way that the song is shot that Bipasha is never objectified
@@HemanthKumarJadhav I guess a point can be made for that. But in my opinion, Oo Antava ma was about the male gaze. For one thing Samantha didn't have a character in the film. Bipasha had a character in the film that was adapted directly from Othello. But yeah, those songs weren't completely innocent too.
I wish more artful and interesting itel songs come out. I really like songs like 'Girls like to Swing,' 'Udi' from Guzarish, 'Shikayat' from Gangubai Kathiawadi, 'Kaisi Paheli Zindagani' from Parineeta that is more about fun, dance, art, and a respectful rather than exploitative, crass and vulgar gaze
See, I don't consider these songs items songs. These songs are genuinely integrated into the story and server a purpose, not for a marketing snippet. "Girls like to swing" for example was an introduction to Anushka the dancer, it's when Kabir first finds out who she is and what she does. "Udi" is about Aishwariya celebrating life in despite of the hardships faced by her and Hrithik, and Hrithik at the end is finally happy to see her let herself free. And so on... More than item songs, these songs are storyline sequences with dance numbers. Just because it's a solo number that doesn't necessarily equate to an item song. Cuz thats like calling "Silsila Yeh Chahat Ka" an item song....They are not pandered to the male gaze, but serve to the story and artistry.
Bollywood also has item songs but u used south indian item song only in thumbnail what's your issue with south films lately You compared a POS movie like thugs of Hindustan with devara And devara is a better movie And I am saying this is as a north indian from Rajasthan
Bro you remember the disha patani item number from baaghi 3? That was some wierd sh*t. People made fun of it saying, tiger is looking for disha's clothes in that song. Lmao.
Bro the movie was trash Disha being in lead role in Baaghi 2 started dancing in nothing sort of a bikini with weird lyrics and cheap choreography, her downfall started from there,no she's less of an actress more of a model for Calvin Klein underwear
Samantha song in puspha created huge buzz especially in North whereas sreleela is just few movies old dancer and doesn't have craze in other languages compared to samantha
It's the song that had the buzz not Samantha. Samantha showed her metal in Family Man 2, for that people remember her in North. She never enjoyed that big a stardom.
Chammak challo literally sold Ra One? You sure about that? It was more of a dance number in which SRK had eqaul if not more screen time in comparison to Kareena.

@@lohit002 Removing item numbers won't change any regressive mindsets. Current regressive mindset is a result of centuries and millenias of oppression and lack of education and social etiquette, first by different Islamic invaders and British and now by both ruling parties turn by turn since independence. Removing item number won't change anything cause they never meant to change anything good or bad to begin with, these songs exist in all parts of the world. S*x sells so s*xual songs sells, it's not "s*xual songs" problem if your society is regressive, just as wearing hijab won't make society less regressive.
Filmmakers who are experts at their crafts won't need item nos. to sell their films. They can drive society in the right direction with their films. No matter how much one remains ignorant but it's a fact that movies shape the minds of the young audience who are in their formative years. Filmmakers should act responsibly with all the power they have in their hands. Great video Jammy Bhai as always.
Integrating songs in the plot sets apart Indian movies from the rest if the world. We should use it to our advantage. I wish there is a time when songs will solely help to move the plot and not unintentionally increase the screentime.
I don't think it's always necessary for a song to move the plot along. As you say, this is a uniquely Indian way of storytelling. It's not a Broadway musical where the songs ARE the plot. There's nothing wrong with a movie being a pretext to create stunning songs that take on a life of their own and create a mini-world within the world of the story. There's nothing wrong with slowing down for a moment, to rest from the excitement of the plot and just enjoy. The problem is when it's done badly - when songs are bad, when the audience is already impatient for the plot to get somewhere already, when a song breaks up the emotions instead of naturally following their natural rhythm in the story... Haphazard songs in mediocre films ticked off a list of marketable features are useless because it's all bad. Not because there's no plot advancement.
When someone like Katrina Kaif doesn't have the courage to call out about her dance sequence's reality, what else can be expected from general public. Otherwise, she always gives good opinions on topics.
The fact that I was thinking to myself of how do I write this cringe article of who is the new Samantha of Pushpa 2? And now uploading a video of item songs is just 🙌
bro at this point people have just started to consider these actors as objects in such songs, completely nullifying their dance and acting… glad that you spoke against it
Who said that to you that we audience are excited for an item song......We are excited to see allu arjun on screen after so long we are eager to see face off between fahadh faasil and allu arjun and how the story unfolds....!!
I don't why but the fire wings behind sreeleela in the poster is giving me vibes of Seth Rollins entrance gear from Clash of the Castle 2022 against his match with Matt Riddle. Lol.
9:27 same with stree part 1, the whole story is based on stree when she was a human, was objectified and killed by the men who were in love with her looks.. they got an item song in the movie...... In which i don't need to tell how our male leads were shown dancing around her..... similarly here the point gets cancelled out by showing how irritated Nora looked when Rajkumar was dancing around her..
The whole point of that song was to show this very thing, that the men of that city thought of women as mere objects of pleasure and lust. Which changes afterwards. Even in stree 2, although they do seem to intend to put it to increase viewership because the fact is numbers increase when a song like that plays, as a marketing tool to bring audiences, which shows how bad the situation is now in society, but still in the stree series, it means something. In the second film, it is to lure the devil, sirkata, to the stage and do the deed ahead. So at least stree has a motive to include it but I do feel that should stop.
@@khushimaster5791 My point was that they glamourise the whole situation Even if it was supposed to be a part of movie.. they are just doing that for money Creative directors can shoot this in a more sensitive way Not everytime an item number is necessary
Item numbers are not just selling the movie. They are selling the movie after it releases as well. A good item song will last atleast 2 wedding seasons. A great item song lasts atleast 10. Iconic ones like Helens last multiple decades. And that way one would want to go back and watch the movie that had so and so song.
There is a song which is currently sort of trending! Manassilayo with Rajinikanth and Manju warrier of vettaiyan! It’s not an item song at any angle! Thought that doesn’t make it any better! A song glorifying the hero but just saying! Such songs exist too!! Though a rarity ofc
You are so true about Pushpa 2's item song Samantha's special song in part 1 was much more discussed than Rashmika. Will have to see what Sree Leela will bring to the table. Hope there is much more to the song other than gymnastics which she usually does in dancing
I swear, I hate so bad those goddamn item numbers. I love the expression of feminine sexuality and the talent. Its better if they're part of the narrative. But it should be both ways. It should be respected and understood, not just objectified. And male sexuality should also be explored, equally respectfully of course.
Male sexuality is always shown so crass, I hope it is shown the same way some directors express female sexuality (not like veere di wedding or thank you for coming lmao)
Jammy, filmi indian has already revealed everything you need to know about pushpa 2 story and plot. So only thing people care for is the item number. Get it. 🤪
Idk why but in Stree 2 , 'Aaj ki raat' never felt like one of the usual item numbers (although if we take the lyrics it does fall into the catagory of 'catering to the male gaze') maybe how it was presented, how beautifully it was sung along with the beats, how all the other background dancers were male, watching Rajkumar and Pankaj Tripathi's hilarious moments, it somehow felt less objectifying and lustful (if I may say) and more of a beautiful performance and a fresh take on an otherwise "item song" Anyways, as always great video Jammy! the way you put out your thoughts in these videos is amazing! Love your content!❤
You are the main character of the film, if you are walking with a straight face seeking for the villian in an item song. Ps. Raees is my favourite in this genre.
@@Passionate-i2mit happened with other Bollywood movies as well they show the villian doing some sort of celebrations in his place and after the song the hero enters and then some action takes place
As a sreeleela fan it is sad to see her doing the "male gaze" roles. I really want her to shine as an actress..! She is an amazing energetic dancer..!!
Anyway Sreeleela's incredible ability to make odd moves look elegant I cannot wait to see if this upcoming song ups the Guntur Kaaram's iconic number. I mean AA and Sreeleela is a killer combo - am skeptical about Ganesh Acharya choreographing
I can imagine Deepika Padukone as a high ranking intelligence officer entering a bar/club to extract information and Ranveer Singh being the lead dancer there, who flirts with her while dancing seductively. Would be so funny and iconic at the same time.
Kajra re is a great example of a good ‘item number’ imo. It is sexy, the lyrics are sharp by Gulzaar saab and has groovy steps. Also, love how beedi jalaile shows a reality of how these local dancers perform. Loved how VB captures it in the song composition & lyrics by Gulzaar saab
Hi Jammy, I am a big fan of you from Tamilnadu ❤ I am not sure about this but the closest example of a male item song (as far as I know) is the song "Rathipushpam" from the Malayalam movie Bheeshma Parvam directed by Amal Neerad. Please check the video song and see for yourself The setting of the song is inspired by the item songs of the 80s movies in Indian cinema Also I personally suggest you one Tamil movie, Lubber Panthu which was a huge hit and is available in Hotstar. It is a perfect package of everything: cricket, ego clashes, humour, romance and emotions 😊
From the perspective of an actress, item songs performed periodically can provide substantial financial rewards and maintain public visibility. Additionally, these performances can serve as a stepping stone for actresses to pursue more women-centric or story-driven roles in the future. So eg A tripti doing bhool bulaya & Vicky vidya ka woh wala video. Helps her get the visibility and financial stability to later to do roles like Laila majnu, Bulbbul and Qala
I don't think Jammy questioned the motives of the actresses themselves even for a moment in this video. Mostly because it's a very different discussion (of course there are practical benefits to taking part in this and letting yourself be objectified; is that in itself enough of a price? On the other hand, women might not feel they have much choice in the matter; how is the industry constructed in the first place?). But mostly it's irrelevant to the main point, because even if women are complicit, the reason the issue exists in the first place is the male demand.
A few times item numbers may be necessary for the plot, for example in Karan Arjun the item song "Gup Chup Gup Chup" was necessary as it distracted the villains, so that Karan & Arjun could steal their weapons.
As a Nora Fatehi superfan, I’ve got to agree. Everything that she has done has led to the next opportunity. However, I don’t think that her early movies (her debut and Crazy Cukkad Family) did her any favours. She became popular enough in the South to get into Big Boss, which ended up being her big break and landing her a place in Jhalak. That’s how she made friends, who are choreographers, and became the Nora Fatehi we know now. It’s crazy to think that it was dance that made people take her seriously as an actress. Shame she didn’t realise that when she had a minuscule role in Fugly and essentially had two item songs in there too. 😭
@@TriedRefusedProductions yeah bro the fucking chamaanprash song. i forgot my earplugs at the gym once and had to leave as that song played on 9XM or something.
I think 2012 was notorious for the amount of terrible and tasteless ‘item numbers’. Ironically, it was also the year where we had some decent women characters in Hindi cinema.
While I agree with most of what you said, at least for allu arjun movies tho, its also a discussion of who can keep up with him. Racegurram is on of my favorite movies of all time, simply because Shruti haasan was one of the only actresses that could effortlessly keep up with a full energy allu arjun.
One benefit of "item songs" is that the heroine gets much more exposure (no pun intended) and recognition by people . Madhuri , Raveena , Karishma , Urmila etc of the 80s and 90s and now Tamannah , Samantha , Sharvari . After they garner eyeballs , they switch to more serious roles and remain in the limelight for a long time . Nothing wrong , after all , it is only entertainment.
keep on defending. A rapist mindset dont care about their dance and talent. And then they ask why it happens ? In modern time there are several other ways to showcase one talent but "jo dikhta hai woh bikta hai" thats the ugly priority of this entertainment industry. If women themselves wont rebel for such culture in the industry, then no one will be able help them in time of need. Its sad that log jaan ke bhi anjaan bante hai aur defend karte hai the influence of this entertainment industry in the worst possible way logo k hawas ko waah wahi samjhte hai ye log
@@tylerisangry2444 one more question, should we apply the same standard to explicit videos and photos posted by the same actors and actresses on instagram?
In stree2 i felt there's no need to integrate a full on dance number. As this dance sometimes feels like out of place and most of the time there were continuity errors too. As Rajk can be seen in serious discussions with his gang and later on he is seen dancing frantically with her like there's no connection between two shot. I would rather like tammanah to have a little bit more moments with pankaj to give an impact of her sacrifice.
Yeah this is the problem with Indian cinema. Item songs with camera angles panning to female body parts and focusing on many parts of female bodies like belly, legs, breasts and weird and perverted dance move as well. This is worst thing about Indian cinema and that needs to change. I'm personally no feminist or women's right supporter but content in filmmaking is important and these item songs kinda drag the movies disrupting the screenplay and the plot of the movie
Item song mein woman right kha se aagye , aree ulta yeh cheap crass hum mein aur normal logo mein effect kar ra hai even AKTK BROTHERS Highlighted THIS , this is the reason outmost growth in crimes against us normal humans Inka kya hai ladies they are earning millions yeh thodi na bhr nikl ti hai fir normal work they are doing high end job like entertainment industry , where as those who are out of this box have so many scenarios everyday for us to tackle it and it's not smooth for anyone.
Whatever u say of dance numbers but tiger shroff and john abraham walking around searching for people in bar with a straight face with item song in background is most hilarious stuff i have seen on screen ever.😂
Women consent, and it's just a dance, better than kiss scenes and complete nudity, dont talk about choice, they themselves do it in reels or post stuff
It's funny none from south initially had this opinion it's the anti bwood gang who themselves propagated this growing up i never heard PPL in ap ts raving about how Telugu cinema is promoting the culture and stuff
Item songs have been noticeably absent in Malayalam films for several years. And a heated debate is ongoing here about a rape scene in a recent movie, accused of objectifying women.
Why do we even need such scenes at all. Even if you want to have a serious discussion about such heavy topic, you don't need to show everything on screen to get your point across. Smh
Looking at the silver lining , Just imagine a dance face off with. Allu Arjun and Sreeleela, if they actually allow her to dance. She is a dancer par excellence!
You’ve pointed it out perfectly. Indian cinema has traditionally catered more to men, and while we’re starting to see more female-led movies, it used to be rare to see a heroine being portrayed as strong and “badass” without a traumatic backstory. As Dimple Kapadia once said, female action heroes often needed a tragic past-like surviving abuse-just to justify their strength, instead of simply being powerful in their own right. But recently, there’s been a refreshing shift. For instance, Prithviraj playing the “item boy” was a fun change, and that song became incredibly popular! Movies like Queen also show how female-driven stories can capture audiences and make a big impact. Crew was also a really nice change, by not having a main hero and still having a lot of fun.
4:50 - It's not like no one was complaining. Sensible people have always been critical of the objectifying of women. Even in print there were people who called it out. They were just dismissed as being puritanical or feminazis or whatever trendy misogynist word was thrown around at the time. They still are. But you are a man and using your platform right in this instance so that's good.
I also agree that the people making and many of the people watching such videos already know about the rights and wrongs of the whole thing. But we also need to ask if it's the responsibility of film industry to be ethical or to just be a source of entertainment, this whole situation can be very subjective imo
Everyone should strive to be ethical. And there's no such thing as "just entertainment" - it's important what you fill your mind and time with, it's important what brings you joy, it's important what you're conditioned to think is an expected or acceptable part of life... Everything gets easier with practice, even mental practice - so be careful what you practice.
That’s why I love you and your content. I don’t like putting people on pedestals; but you deserve to be on one coz of your mindfulness and shining light on dark underbelly topics no one wants to talk about - especially related to women portrayed in media. I really wish you were my son or brother, I would have considered myself absolutely lucky to have such a level headed and intelligent person in my life.
The thing is item songs exist in Indian films but women dancing for male gaze has been happening for centuries rights from kings era to recent pubs or recording dances, if you want to raise a topic then do it properly bro, women consent to sing, to dance for these songs, questioning selective films is what you can do, but women will still do it in reels and college or public events etc
In countryside of Bengal, from where I come from..on various occasions ORCHESTRA is arranged..where dance group would come and perform.. These ORCHESTRA would start with all traditional dance performances on bengali songs .. Then as night grows, the clothes would come down from female dancers and the song would change, male audience would throw money to these dancers.. And the women, girl from the audience would go home after a certain time frame then these male gaze performances would start..
In a recent interview marking the 20th anniversary of *Arya*, Sukumar revealed that he initially didn’t like the inclusion of the item song "Aa Ante Amalapuram." He only included it due to pressure from the producer, Allu Arvind. However, when the song was released, it became an instant hit, and the movie gained significant recognition because of it. From that point on, Sukumar began incorporating item songs in his films.
So true bro😢First of all I thought that the early 90s had started this😮later when I had scrolled a bit I realised the fact that the item songs were already present in the industry 😅
The truth is that we don’t who to blame at this point. The films for promoting these things? Or the massive male audience who sit for the movie simply to watch the item song? I remember watching agnipath and as soon as chikni Chameli ended, half the theatre (just men) got up and left the movie. That’s when I knew that even as a women, I need watch where I spend my money because it’s just for the money that these item songs are being made. So if I want to fight against these mentality, I need to give my money to movies with either male item songs or no item songs. Be the change you want to see, right?
Hey Jammy! Would you be open to making a video discussing how abysmally short marketing timelines for movies can negatively impact their buzz and, consequently, their box office performance?
No telugu movies is complete with atleast 1 item song🤧 There are some item songs in south and bollywood as well where the lyrics objectify women and stirs a controversy and still they make item songs !😪
Pushpa songs are so famous in the USA that the item number debuted at Coachella. The song is played at the local clubs filled with white people, by a white DJ's. I still don't get it.
Let's be a little frank here Katrina's entire career is based on playing an eye candy who dances well. She rarely plays a character with depth and substance so obviously she's going to defend her bread and butter, no surprise here. Items songs are totally integrated to cater the male gaze because apparently there are lots of people who don't give a damn about the plot or cinematography of the movie and they only to go see movies like Pushpa and 100 others like it because it has an alpha male character and a groovy item number which is the only form of entertainment they will accept. On the other hand, young actresses do these songs to make it big in the industry in a short time and earn a quick buck. The key is to not get restricted to these songs and have a versatile approach like Samantha who went on to do something completely opposite like Citadel after her song in Pushpa.
I always felt that the hero, dancing with the item girl, is kinda cheating on his woman. Because he would not let her dance with any male.

But u enjoy when hollywood singers pee on people right?that's enjoyable moments for u and btw ur english songs are problematic too.

True
Brother those are not item songs, maybe kaise paheli but rest are just regular dance numbers
If you understand the lyrics.... Oo Antava of Pushpa is a kickass item song with real meaning!
Girls like to swing is such an underrated bop😭

Otherwise, she always gives good opinions on topics.
why are you questioning her opinion just because it doesn't match your view you think she's not telling the truth she feels and is a coward

I swear, I hate so bad those goddamn item numbers. I love the expression of feminine sexuality and the talent. Its better if they're part of the narrative. But it should be both ways. Hi Jammy, I am a big fan of you from Tamilnadu ❤
I am not sure about this but the closest example of a male item song (as far as I know) is the song "Rathipushpam" from the Malayalam movie Bheeshma Parvam directed by Amal Neerad. Please check the video song and see for yourself
The setting of the song is inspired by the item songs of the 80s movies in Indian cinema
Also I personally suggest you one Tamil movie, Lubber Panthu which was a huge hit and is available in Hotstar.

It was weird to have a cameo of Nora in Bhuj (patriotic film) 😮
And what the hell is the lyric Zaalima coca cola pila de. 😖 I wish Shreya refused that song 😅😐
A few times item numbers may be necessary for the plot, for example in Karan Arjun the item song "Gup Chup Gup Chup" was necessary as it distracted the villains, so that Karan & Arjun could steal their weapons.
In that case, even Aaj ki raat of stree 2 was necessary to bring/distract Sarkata.

As a Nora Fatehi superfan, I’ve got to agree. Everything that she has done has led to the next opportunity. However, I don’t think that her early movies (her debut and Crazy Cukkad Family) did her any favours.

Looking at the silver lining ,
Just imagine a dance face off with.
Love how Allu Arjun fans defended Oo Anatava saying it's "satire"
If things continue like this, they need to include songs that cater to the female gaze as well; that’s what equality looks like.
Meanwhile hritik roshan in luck by chane 🕺🏻
Rakhi Sawant was ostracised all her life for what is now a staple for Nora Fatehi. The former was born in the wrong era.
I think it's a lot related to her controversial behaviour
Hey Jammy! Would you be open to making a video discussing how abysmally short marketing timelines for movies can negatively impact their buzz and, consequently, their box office performance?
Bro's becoming Tanmay Bhat in terms of consistency 👍
No telugu movies is complete with atleast 1 item song🤧 There are some item songs in south and bollywood as well where the lyrics objectify women and stirs a controversy and still they make item songs !😪

I can listen your voice whole day regarding any topic, hopefully we'll have a coffee date someday 💙🌸🇧🇩🇮🇳
Stree 2 made a freaking side story of Tamana & Pankaj, Just to insert her in the Item Song.

Sums up the double standards of Indian Cinema
Pushpa songs are so famous in the USA that the item number debuted at Coachella. The song is played at the local clubs filled with white people, by a white DJ's. I still don't get it.
Congratulations 🎉🎉 we collectively promoted our national pride to other countries successfully 🤝🤟🤝👏👏
Don't know why puspha 2 selected sreeleela as she is no where comparable to samantha who did special song in part 1
You're actually right Mahn!
