Sir Lindsay Hoyle gave The Times Red Box an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of his office to explain all, from deciding the day’s parliamentary business to plans to open up his plush state rooms to the public after an expensive restoration project.

I've a lot of time for Sir Lindsay. Not just because it's great to hear such a prominent Lancastrian voice in public life, but I was a young trainee surveyor working for a coal mining company who wanted to develop a landfill site in his constituency. The way that Hoyle, a local councillor, stood up for the constituents who elected him, taught me a lot about democracy.

I met lyndsay hoyle once in Chorley he was really friendly and smiley ☺ he deserves to go high up in the world of politics

Still weird to think this is the guy I shook hands with in Chorley ~10 years ago when he was going door-to-door in the run-up to the elections. MP of Chorley since 1997, but this guy does not rest!

Hoyle is a credit to Chorley and the rest of the UK i met him after a football tournament when I was a kid top bloke happy for him getting the speaker of the house job
1) Censures MPs for calling out a liar.
2) Doesn't censure the actual liar.
3) Exchanges his spine, honor, and reputation for a peerage.

Being from the us I find it confusing but there is so much passion and face to face putting it out there being able to get rite to the point so unlike what I would have pitcher I do not have much educational about the way your system works but the greatest respect can't stop watching
What I don't understand is how, as an MP, the speaker is able to serve and represent their constituents if they are unable to vote or participate in debates?

That's been a complaint of the constituents of the Speaker of the House for a long time.

What does the speaker do ? ,a very good question . If I was speaker I would make the Prime Minister answer the question in full ,and he would stay there until he did .

Hoyle is only concerned with maintaining outdated procedures. He did nothing when Johnson lied about Starmer's involvement in the Saville fiasco.

Used to be a fan, not at the moment.
How in recent PMQs he allows Boris to slander Kier on comments r.e. Saville yet then ejects Blackford after presenting evidence that Boris mislead parliament was such a contradiction.
Then after all of that he still didn’t follow through and throw Blackford out. I feel he lacks the ability to control the room and the tories will use this to their advantage
Blackford broke the House of Commons rules, Johnson didn't. I know that sounds crazy but it's the rules that the Speaker is bound by that are at fault - not the Speaker himself.

The problem is he does absolutely nothing to prevent Boris from repeatedly lying to the house. If MP's and the PM aren't telling the truth to the house and nothing is done about it, it's just a pointless pantomime.
If the current framework of procedures isn't able to stop the lies then the speaker should change the procedures.

I think he's funny and does come out with some funny statements. If i'm honest i wouldn't do his job for a gold clock. I just wish that some of the out dated ancient rules or laws were more updated or gotten rid of.And then certain events wouldn't be happening the way they do. But he does appear to be fair..even if i don't agree sometimes..love his office though..

For example the speaker is forced by convention/rules to remove any MP from debate for saying another MP lied or intentionally mislead Parliament regardless of whether they actually have or not. This restricts freedom of speech, dampens the value of debate in Parliament and only encourages more unofficial debates on tv/press. Don't get me started about 'The Right Honourable' title tripe too, representing your constituency is the only title that should count unless they are a minister/shadow minister.

It’s tradition and culture, that’s one of the aspects that draws millions of people to the U.K. every year, because off our traditions. Bercow knew what democracy mean, he respected every colleagues that he has in the house, he knew how to lead the debate, but after the betrayal of all the chamber with the " Serial Bully" scandal, he was deeply hurt so that's why he doesn't give an order about the problems of the British parliament nowadays

There was me thinking part of the Speaker's job was to ensure that 'inadvertant' untruths were corrected by the minister responsible, rather than just censoring MPs for calling out lies
It's complicated
An ornamental speaker, doesn't do his job and has facilitated the worst PM in British history. One of these guys who as soon as he feels part of the establishment forgets any principle he ever stood for.
Based on the thumbnail, we can conclude that one thing he does _not_ do is get his pants pressed.

This speaker's role seems mostly to involve tolerating lying and then expelling people who won't.
Unfortunately that's because it's in law that you cannot call someone out for lying. It's the hundred plus year old law that needs changing, the speaker unfortunately has to follow that practice other he would be deemed impartial, which is a big no no for a speaker. Hence why Bercow never got the traditional honours after he stepped down

What does the speaker do? He lets the Prime Minister blatantly lie, and throws out anyone who dares to call out the lies.
That's because the law states you cannot call someone out for being untruthful in parliament. It's the law that needs updating as it's so old. The speaker is just following what he has to.

No it's because it's his job. If he accepts and agrees that someone has lied he would be removed from his job. I'm not saying it's right. The law obviously is out dated and needs to changed.
