I miss chats with LTC Fiedler. He was kind enough to entertain many of my questions and experiences while a Marine Communications Officer back in the early 2000's.

I'm active duty. I've never heard such a credible, concise, explanation of military communications. This man never missed a beat. I'm truly blown away by the most intriguing monologue I've ever witnessed.

The AN/PRC-150 is/was a type-1 set. The “lesser” crypto radio was the 5800H. Both radios are now obsolete....but if used for “open” data and voice, they are both still useable. Many users have added external crypto to these old radios with good, but cumbersome success. Today the AN/PRC-160 and the 7800H are modernized radios with capabilities allowing much higher data rates....along with standard voice throughput. No, HF will never replace SATCOM or Ku band ops, but any relevant agency who ignores or tosses HF capability away is demonstrating sheer, blatant stupidity. ALE 3 is a well established mode that takes much of the guesswork out of user setup, especially when bullets are flying. ALE 4 is on the doorstep making some semblance of automatic ops a real possibility. There are antenna kits out there that can be used to help insure ops no matter the time of day or timing during the solar cycle. My point is....HF DOES work and with a little bit of training and common sense, it can always be there to get the job done.

Any large organization that needs to function regardless of geopolitical turmoil or natural disaster, and minimizes the importance of HF radio (or ignores it entirely), does so at their peril. 2-30Mhz provides reliable worldwide comms with relatively inexpensive and rudimentary equipment. The capabilities of HF get better all the time.

A riveting video. We had SINCGARS sets in our tracks but dismounts still used PRC-77s into the early 2000s. The Falcon II and III gear in service now is absolutely astounding - light years ahead of the stuff we had.

20:16 and now units are starting to learn about HF again. If you can't get satellite time, you can still talk on good old HF.

4:50 A superb account of this allocation of "useless" MF and HF spectrum to radio amateurs is Clint DeSoto's "200 Meters & Down: The Story of Amateur Radio," first published in 1936.

My grandpa has a ww1 military radio that still works he said he will give it to me some time is it worth anything or junk?

Even if it isn't much to sell, sounds like you can't put a cost on it being a working heirloom. Lend it to a amateur radio club if you ever do receive it. Old radios like that need to be used.
