With that much birch bark, it would have been hard NOT to have a fire. And, why not carry a fero rod that will work with multiple tinders instead of a "sparkie" which requires a man made tinder tab to ignite? Or even a Bic lighter if you are going to carry something for fire making?
This might last for 1 hour...a good old cold sub zero winter night lasts 16-18 hours. What solution do you have for that? I would also have removed all the snow from below. It melts dude. ;)

Also break up your fuel before starting the fire so you are focused on keeping it going rather than breaking up the kindling AND keeping it going.
