It's a tree. The purpose is to direct energy away from the trunk into the fruiting process. With the trunk shredded like that its energy will go to the crown where the leaves will grow bigger and faster while producing more fruits. Forcing sprouting from the main stem. The tree will suffer at the start, but once healed it will be prolific.

The tree won’t broke into 2 pieces?
No.. the tree remains safe. While the papaya is not yet recovered after bending, the stake will support it. And once the wound healed then the stem became thick and strong the same as before.
It keeps the papaya plant low to the ground producing more fruit,the plant will take a long time repairing the damaged trunk,guess you guys never seen a fallen or wind damaged papaya plant still producing lots of fruits.Plants are like people they fix their owns cuts and broken bones .
