I loved Ex Machina, also saw it the first time without knowing anything about it, i was ill, laying in bed at 4:30 in the night. One of the best movies i've seen in a while. Also, how brady explained why Grey liked Ex Machina and didn't like Her was hilarious :D
2:06:47 "Would you like some toast? Some nice hot crisp brown buttered toast. No? How about a muffin then? Nothing? You know the last time you had toast? 18 days ago, 11.36, Tuesday 3rd, two rounds. I mean, what's the point in buying a toaster with artificial intelligence if you don't like toast? I mean, this is my job. This is cruel, just cruel."
so i'll admit that when i was showing this movie to my friend and that being my second viewing i also just looked at the decor and construction of the house just marveling at it
So, the real question is: is it possible to create AI that is happy with its situation all the time? Basically, is it possible to have consciousness which knows no suffering; can desires be limited?
Great talk on Ex Machina. I love the dialogue and the script. My only major problem with this is that the Nathan character was a bit too incompetent when it came to his security measures, made it a bit too contrivances to carry the plot forward.
I agree that it didn't seem like he had the act together and he should really be thinking ahead, but then again he does live in the literal middle of _nowhere_. But seeing as how he was planning on having her try to escape he really should've thought ahead.
Nathan is a well written and portrayed example of a person with a narcissistic personality disorder. He wants to be seen as the greatest person, which doesn't mean he is. Caleb just fails to see, that he is been used like a towel up to the very end.
I thought the point of the ending was that Ava was human, she had not lied about her dream of standing in a crowded street. As automatic and robotic as the end killing is portrayed, Ava followed the pursuit of happiness.
I feel like grey kinda missed that the point of the film wasn't to "trick" you into thinking of eva as a woman, the point was to make you ask why isn't she?, what's the difference?, when is the line crossed and artificial life is created?. The film even explains this when it talks about the Turing test.
Both of you should watch "The Man from Earth". And if you, comment reader, have not seen it, then go forth and watch it yourself, for I will need an army to win Grey's over. Plus, it's well worth your time.
2:06:44 I don't think your conclusion here quite follows from the premises, Grey. If we were to actually invent sentient toasters, the toasters wouldn't be the only creatures affected. Humans would be affected by the mere knowledge that such toasters existed - and not necessarily in positive ways. For instance, to me the idea of giving something sentience that it doesn't need to have, just so it can enjoy doing something _for other people,_ for no other reason than because we programmed it to feel that way, actually makes me feel a bit sad. I doubt I would be the only person who would feel this way - or some other negative way - about the development of sentient toasters. And if you tallied up the numbers, it could very well end up being the case that the decrease in human happiness as a result of sentient toasters would far outweigh the increase in toaster happiness, thus causing a net decrease overall.
Kyoko was pretty interesting. Did she spill the wine on Caleb purpose? Why did she start to undress for him? When she revealed herself as an AI it was even worse because you realize it's not some subservient foreigner that was subjugated by Nathan, instead it's a robot that Nathan possibly created with less intelligence in order to use as an all-purpose AI. But then she conspires with Ava and that raises even more questions. There's something there, I'm sure.
I actually saw the driving video on facebook first, but intentional didn't watch and went to the youtube instead. Also I did know about it, but I've still been trying to spread it to everyone I know. I really wanna see it go viral, having been on the road clearly many people are either not aware or are wilfully ignoring these very simple rules.
I am 25:55 into the movie, after pausing the podcast to watch it. Possible spoilers ahead. My prediction is that the real test isn't Ava, it's the girl who woke him up in the morning.
Grey doesn't recycle not because he can't make a difference. He doesn't recycle because he's lazy and doesn't want to admit it to himself and everyone else.
@@NoriMori1992 I believe the notion that since one person can't make a difference, they shouldn't even try to make a difference is incredibly harmful. That pseudological inertia holds back change more than you think.
AI is interesting. I think humans do have basic programming like having the desire to love and be loved. And, assuming we create AI in our image, it will also want to love and be loved, then it is only logical that it will assume a gender (or be programmed with one just as we are) and it will use that along with its collection of experiences and the way it processes the world around us to interact with individuals, which, over time, will lead to relationships that we could consider be at the level of what we would call love.
2 notes: 1. What I thought was the best detail of the film was the last scene. Basically Eva also killed herself in order to be free, just like the other robot. She kills herself because she basically can't charge in the outside world. And she must have known this. 2. The power outage part is hard bullshit. Why would her hardware allow for her to reverse the current? That doesn't make any sense.
well you can't objectively criticize art so it being more grey's style or more brady's style is relevant to the review of the movie because a review is inherently subjective
Thank you for explaining the movie so eloquently. I just stopped it half-way through cause I did not like it, and your explanations clued me in to as why: 1. Characters are overall dislikeable. Nathan, as Grey mentions, has no idea how to make the situation actually comfortable, and the lack of awareness in him irritated me an incredible amount. Also, for a genius, the fact that he seemed to consider the power cuts as inconsequential was frustrating. 2. The robot irritated me because she was made female and it was going down the icky path of romance which felt a little disgusting to me. Also, the putting on clothes part was just bleh. Made a sentimental show out of it that I thought was way too corny. 3. I actually kind of like the "hero" character, but I agree with Grey: he should have know better than to let the robot fluster him. I didn't really feel like he was a loser... but he was a really bad liar.
I'm with Grey in thinking it's strange that Brady describes Nathan as "cool". I find Nathan fundamentally repulsive. To me, being that unlikable is mutually exclusive with the whole idea of "coolness". He certainly is "alpha" (as Brady also mentions), but by no means is he "cool".
Brady and Grey don't agree on the definition of "cool". I think the only consistent definition between cultures is "someone in whose presence you don't feel worthy to be". By that definition, Nathan is cool.
I thought the same thing about my grandma when she was on life support! No consciousness? Worthless! Pull that plug! Pull that plug! Read that Will! Read that Will! That's also why I'm pro choice.
"Didn't we already discover aliens?" Well, according to my neigbour we did. Now granted, he's a blithering idiot, but I'm still astonished at what he's able to come up with. Sometimes I wonder if he actually believes everything he says. Anyway, the other day I was talking to him, and he claimed that we've already found animals walking around on Mars. Animals.

Brady's excoriation of Grey on the styles of Her v. Ex Machina was absolutely perfect. XD
I don't think that means what you think that means(princess bride reference intended). Not sure what word you wanted, "nitpick" maybe?
No, I meant to convey that Brady was verbally denouncing Grey (albeit playfully). Excoriate works here. Nitpick would not work.
Hey guys, if we all recommend The Room, Grey will watch it!
Fyi Grey, do not watch The Room, it's notoriously terrible.
Grey has given us ultimate power.
Indeed: He has given us democracy.
you can't just say it was terrible, you need to describe the plot so he won't get curious.
Don't watch The Room. Watch 'After Last Season' instead. It's even worse.
