    I’m an older gent, but love watching what you do on your channel. I especially like the collaboration with your father, my father got me into cars and sadly he passed away too early. Keep up the great work however I do have one suggestion if I might. Please consider more use of PPE (hearing, eye and lung protection). When my father was younger he experienced a traumatic head injury while working under a vehicle. A very large wrench dropped directly on his head fracturing his skull and breaking the orbital bone around his eye. It was a long excruciating recovery. I’ve myself experienced an eye injury that nearly took my eye sight. You have many who follow your channel, please use it to promote safety in your work, there is nothing uncool about being safe.

    Matt! Half of those rivets are bad just so you know. Reason being that the stem (the part in the middle) is broken off below the locking collar. In this case the structural capabilities of the rivet are compromised and now it’s not able to hold as well, rivets are easy to remove and replace so I would definitely recommend doing that

    Hey Mat, quick guide for the death bolt unless you already removed it!
    - penetrating oil never hurts!
    - remove nut
    - find some 4mm-ish washers and tap them into the clamp slots
    - crank the guts out of the bolt head until it snaps clean off
    - get yourself a long M10 nut ~25 mm the least, the higher the grade the better, screw on the nut side
    - screw a long M10 thread stud in there, same applies, higher grade the better
    - put piece of pipe over it, ~1 inch or so diameter
    - add washers, a strong nut and start cranking to pull it out!
    - if you choose to apply !some! heat, try not exceeding 150° C to not alter the properties of the cast.
    Pulled my 2011 Audis bolts that way like a charm and very cheap!

      that's how i did it on my 2011 audi as well. before i snapped of the bolt i could move it back and forth again and again to make it loose (with a lot of wd40) and then it was an easy job to get the bolt out from the other side using washers and nuts. and i didn't use heat at all.

    Making the front structure stronger with panel bond might compromise its capacity to absorb impacts in case of a crash (I hope you guys never crash this car or at all) so that might be why it didn't have it before. The front structure acts like a pillow together with the engine in case of a crash. Anyway, love the content❤️

    The reaaon for the lack of panel bond on the chassis leg is because the crumple zone needs to have a specific strength for each structure in order to crumple correctly and provide the most safety. The original prototype design most likely did have panel bond there until the crash test data came back and showed it needed to be weaker in that area.

    • @TigerT72
      @TigerT72 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I came here to say exactly this! I’m no expert, but even I worked out that the lack of panel bond in those areas had to have something to do with the crumple zones. A major car company wouldn’t leave it panel bond-free unless it was for a specific reason.

    Flow drill screw (FDS) technique combines the friction drilling and thread forming processes into one single operation, and has been widely adopted in the automotive industry. Because of the remarkable single-sided joining capability and excellent dynamic/static mechanical performance, it has become one of the major fastening techniques for closed or semi-closed aluminium extrusions and thin-walled structures that cannot be connected with two-sided joining approaches like self-piercing riveting (SPR) and clinching.

      This probably is the case, but I doubt it makes a lot of difference. Those bolts have quite serious strength on their own, and since the part is pretty big and has long leverage, it'll probably just bend up anyways. It's main job is to deliver forces to the chassis, and it'll do just that. Panel bond makes a very tight bond, but with the forces in play when a 2-ton SUV hits something, it'll give.
      Pure speculation, obviously, but I can't see it being an issue.

    Those screws are usually applied by a FDS Robot. (Flow Drill Screw)
    Generally used because they can be applied from one side of the panel.
    Robots that apply Rivets use a self piercing rivet which uses a die to form the rivet so access to both sides of the panel is required.

    Hi Matt
    When panels are bonded together the main strength is in the bond. The rivets are to prevent peel. Bond is very strong in shear but not in peel. Imagine sticking two bits of tape together and trying to pull them apart, then peel them apart. On you're trying to break all the glue the other just the very front edge.

  • @robc1014
    @robc1014 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The rivets massively contribute to the structural strength. Each 1/4” blind rivet has a shear strength of over 150kg.f depending on type, it can be way higher. The panel bond is also very strong, they work in unison together. Great stuff though.

    The top bolts (aka your death bolts) blow torch and an air gun always does the trick for me. The Urus ones aren’t as bad to get out like the other VAG models.
    You’re gonna need a battery btw, not cheap… now has a modified harness and a lead acid battery. Dealer price is about 4.5k inc labour. Yours will have the original Urus LiFePO battery which is not available from Lambo anymore.
