If you add guttering to the shelters you will be able to direct rain water to the tanks on the pens

Importance of a consistent water source is vital and rainwater is not always consistent, especially if you live in any area except Seattle. The Simplicity of of his design seems to be fluidic.

@@michaelerickson3558 the same tank can be refilled with more than one method. If one is passive, seems good to me.

Great design. We have tried something similar, initially damaging a few of the pens in high wind gusts, mostly in the spring/fall. We now use 2 metal stakes per coop that move daily which seem to work in all 'normal' wind conditions. Adds a bit of time to daily chores, but keeps them firmly grounded.

String trimmer line keeps hawks from swooping down. String across aerially in a random pattern. They can't navigate the lines to fly in.

We have been experimenting with different structures on open pasture with electric netting for about a year now. We have broilers and egg layers on pasture. We have had a couple problems with wind picking up our structures and breaking them upon impact. We have now built a lower structure that is 2 ft high but open on the sides. So far so good. The lower structure also has had a better success rate against hawks. Thanks for your work.

It will be interesting to see how you move them each day. Also curious how they stay in place during higher winds. My earlier suggestion to name them is "Chick Chalet", because from a distance they look like little chalets on the hillside. Very pastoral.

The birds will probably forage more but that breed will mainly just lay around 90 percent of the time. I really think you need to move to a freedom ranger or "in between" breed that when you butcher them you will actually see lots of grass and forage in the gizzard and make USE of this brilliant extra space to roam. I know why you raise Cornish Cross but they are not a very good pasture bird. It might be worth the extra two weeks it takes to finish out a different breed to make full use of this mobile system and improve the quality of your meat.

Nice, light system. Looks great, but I'd add some vertical supports along the center of the roof if you want it to withstand snow loads. Even a couple per "truss", either vertically or diagonally to the "bottom" center of the "truss" horizontal( to create a "yolk"...no pun intended) would go a long way to support a snow load. Keep up the great work. Very inspiring. Cheers!
PS: A good test would be: if a grown man can lay down, spread out on each side of the roof, without it collapsing, that would be similar to a snow load. If it won't support a person, it likely won't support a snow load, especially a wet snow.

Hi Richard, thank you for the videos that you are sharing, it’s thoughtful and nice to watch since you are a natural teacher. I have been following your videos since sometime now. Would you be kind to answer a question please. I will start broiler chickens, l have found a place where l can consume. But they are talking about first vaccines! If l understood right! You do not use any kind of antibiotics or vaccines whatsoever! What do you suggest? Should l tell them that l do not want any kind of vaccines or antibiotics, l would like them as they are! What do you suggest? Hope this reaches to you, have a good day and thank you in advance. 🙏🏻

I like what you have done here. On my tiny tiny scale of first time 6 birds i used the premium one poultry net and found it to be fantastic. Last year without the electric fence I lost all my birds to predators....

    I love this! Great job!
I can see this being a great upgrade from the smaller tractor type pens. My goal is to get started next spring with 300+ broilers in NW Oklahoma, where predators and severe weather are the two major concerns. I think they may have to be built heavier for my area due to high winds.

  • @fiore-livinglife_0630

Hi Richard! Love following your work! I am a bit worried about that the elevated roof and light weight of the "rollerpens" will make the structure at risk for toppling or lifting in wind. Perhaps putting bags in the corners, and fill with water for extra weight for those days when the forecast looks really windy?

Fascinated by this new design of chicken tractor - I know you touched on the subject of predators and I was wondering how you finished the season - any fatalities from predators ? This seems like an exposed way of raising the broilers but I really like the idea. Thanks for sharing your work.

I have a couple of ideas about aerial protection use some tall fence posts or wooden stakes in the 2 to 3 meter height above ground with eye bolts at top around the open area run rope between the and in a X pattern have guy ropes on each stake with a tent peg
How it would work is move the netting to new location set up tall pound tall posts into ground out side run rope through eye bolts on top loosely pound in tent pegs loop guy ropes over them useing sliding toogle blocks to add tension to to guy lines and tighten the ropes running over head

  • @amykinnell2837

Why not hook your feeders onto the side rails then they will be under the roof (out of rain) & move automatically with the shelters (less manual labor).

I wonder if little pieces of bright ribbon tied on the top of the fence at intervals, flapping in wind, would enhance the airborne predator deterrent, without disturbing the chickens.

I know this is a dated video, but I'd still like to suggest " BROLLER PENS" - contraction of Broiler Roller ?
Also, one could bring two units to each end of the penned area with a net across the top of the gap between, perhaps, thus giving the birds a safer open space. Not much extra work to clip a net into hooks on the brollers? Regards.

I like the lighter weight to these new hen houses. I would not like any heavy weight from trucks and tractors pulling my hen houses. We are growing soil and overcoming soil compaction. No need to further compact soil. Dr Elaine Ingham said we get almost 500% more protein in pasture grasses from soil that has built up its Organic Matter and has undone soil compaction while increasing the vibrancy of the Soil Biology.

So Justin Rhodes uses a mobile chicken coop with an electrical fence here in the USA. He also puts a goose with the hens so as to keep the predator away. Maybe that will be a good solution to keeping the hens somewhat safe.

I don't understand how this saves you time. It takes me and the hubby an hour to completely remove and replace a 100 ft fence (this includes getting the sides as straight as possible, pegs on the bottom for snake protection and removal and replacement of ground rods, eventually we will be able to be a little faster but not much), and with that many birds in that area you are gonna need to move that every couple days, isn't it faster to just move the broiler pens everyday which shouldn't take as much time as moving that fence does.
Also I don't understand what those pens are doing for the birds now. With no sides down to the ground they aren't stopping wind, I wouldn't think you would need sun protection for them in Sweden, I guess they are keeping the rain off them if they choose to stay under there when it rains, what other use am I missing?

Thank you Richard. I’m really interested in seeing how this experiment goes. The Salatin pens are great. They have proved them to be very low cost but at the same time efficient and productive. Your new design looks great and my opinion is that it's a step forward. Actually this is the first low cost broiler pen I have seen that could be better than the Salatin one. The only concern is the weather or more precisely the wind. How much wind can it withstand and how they can be secured if a heavy wind coming in. Other than that this is definitely the design I will use.

In Southern Tasmania I'd call them 'The Mary Poppins" or 'The Flying Nun", they look too light to withstand our strong winds. Don't get me wrong, I like the animal welfare aspect of the system, I much prefer it to the other style broiler pens. I'd have to tweak the design to make it work here. Nice work, always pushing the envelope.
