Not to mention how many Victorian gentlemen would be horribly confused with all those perfectly normal words being replaced with asterisks, right? :D Censoring is a stupid thing anyway. The only reasonable argument you could make is that people who write messages that consist 30% of swear words probably don't have anything interesting to say anyway... but we don't remove what they wrote, just black out the "offensive" words, so... what's the point? If you want to take a stand on something you find offensive, do that. Filters have absolutely no positive impact on the writers, nor the readers. They're just a really simple thing to implement that gets particularly stupid people off your backs. Because we all know, that when you write something like "We should kill all the gay people", the offensive part is the "gay" word, right? Everything is peachy when you just change it into "We should kill all the g*y people", right? :D Isn't the point of MMOs as a genre kind of to interact with... other people? Stopping all kinds of meaningful impact players have on the world just to stop a bunch of 12 year-olds and 50 year-old idiots living in basements (or being insurance brokers) sounds quite a bit like throwing out the baby with the bath water. If you can't stand the risk of having people ruin others' enjoyment (fair enough), let them build communities of their own, with their own policing :)
@@DisastrousIntentionally I... don't think so. Especially in the USA, this definitely predates the internet, much less twitter snowflakes. There's just something really weird about American culture and euphemisms/swear-words/hiding-what-people-say-do-or-think. Not that it's _uniquely_ American, of course, and it definitely spreads, and it is getting worse, and the people involved are getting more and more self-righteous.
It's not, but if you put a word that implies violence or insult + the word "gay" it becomes an insult to the GAY group. That's why filters are needed, no company wants to be sued in the millions because of words others have written, better filter than risk being targeted.
For the water/breath bar, they should make it invisible until youre in water, and its depleting, but after youre on land and its full, it goes away. Too much visual stimuli on the screen. Edit: maybe they could make it like Ark survival evolved, like a little h20 icon
I don't agree that text filtering is the right solution because what happens is that people just find other ways to be offensive. I think there needs to be two things. A client setting that can hide user signs and a way for users to report offensive signs and enforce the old "be nice or you get thrown out".
While that's true, you still want at least a basic filter to remove the worst slurs. You'll have to sanitize the inputs anyway, might as well remove some stuff that will get you into hot water if you don't (like the n-word).
@@rolfs2165 n word is fun censor n word what about n word with 1 g less? @@CallumUpton I apologize if this seemed like a personal attack, it's just frustrating. But that would be a fantastic feature, too good for them to actually implement.
Well.. no, text filters are the wrong answer to the problem. What you need is an easy to use system to report abuse and real consequences to people not playing game. If your game already has a very basic text chat you should already have that. You are fùĉked otherwise. With filters people will just come up with ways to circumvent your filtering. Using accents, sepelling things backwards, spelling it wrong on purpase, using interpunctation inbetween letters. Stuff like that. You need to make it very clear and known that such abuse has consequences and you need an easy way to report such things, check those reports and yes, also punish people making false reports.
I'm finally getting the chance to go through all of these videos. And it just makes me want to try my hand at making a base level game and have it actually function as intended. the fact that they add all these stupid emoji's to their patch notes in discord is really stupid and unprofessional but given the entire shitshow history of what I cant call anything but a big scam I am not surprised that they continue to do it.
These videos would be way stronger if you toned down the hyperbole. The Dreamworld guys are not going to do something epically stupid and hilarious every week, and it feels a little forced when you try to take something that is sort of dumb, or even pretty dumb, and blow it up into "the dumbest thing ever." Your videos would still be interesting with less of that, they don't need to always be a big reveal of some epic programming blunder on their part. Another way to get more mileage out of these patch notes would be if you went back to showing us how they should have programmed things differently, in order to do it properly. That was very interesting for a non game dev to see. I really appreciate that you're taking the time to make these videos, and hold these guys to account. These are just some small comments I had, which I hope are constructive, and which you can feel free to ignore if you don't agree.
That was also the first thing I thought about 😂 would be funny if someone drops all the databases of their system exposes the possibility of slq injection
I'm still annoyed by the player character's fingers. It seems like the middle finger have been broken and didn't heal properly so it's permanently crooked.
So weirdly Boundless has both customisable signs and nameable plot areas. I don't know about the signs and I never tried to name my plot anything weird, but I've never seen anything terrible. I am not sure what Boundless did to combat it, or if it's just that the community is so small they actually prefer to play nice.

Why do you NEED to filter words? If it's a game for children, ok, make a filter for them (and an option to turn it off), but otherwise... e.g. GTA V is filtering jeweils, the German word for for-each, to ***eils... not a good experience
Yakety Sax, the Benny Hill song, is not under public domain. I'm not saying this is a *huge* loss for the rights owners, but I'm sorry to say that I'm continually surprised by the apparently "extra-legal" actions taken by these guys.
Did the developers never attend high school or at least interacted with someone who was a teenager in the last 30 years? Anytime you allow people to input text, they will inevitably type something offensive.
To be honest, if I would be tasked with making sign, I would also propably forget to add filter (maybe cause I am not used to mnorpgs) I am not saying they were right, I just want to say I would propably screw this too
It shows that they're not really developers. The first thing any developer learns (regardless of being game dev, web dev or software dev) is always treat user input as harmful, thus you must alway sanitise it. Never assume for example that if the user is prompted to enter their age, the user will only enter a number between 0 and let's say 120. Always assume the user will enter text, negative numbers, scripts, SQL statements that will wipe your whole database, and other more or less disastrous things. If something is doable, someone will eventually do it. The trick is to limit the user as much as possible, whenever and wherever possible.
@@oliver_twistor yeah. I know that. Also I dont want to sound like I am defenfing them. I would propably forget to put that filter in. I primarily play games that have public or semipublic servers so they make their own rules. But I can totally see this being thing in MNORPGs
@@mmgmismas I didn't get the impression that you were defending them. I only wanted to explain why it's yet another sign that they aren't developers (of any kind), because even if they were software devs (like Garrison claims to be) and this is their first attempt at making a game, they shouldn't have made this glaring error (among other glaring errors even moderately experienced software developers wouldn't make). However, it's easy to forget such details when their game has like 1 million other issues.
I just don't understand how anyone, developer or otherwise, could look at this and not immediately ascertain that the game is trash. The graphics are trash, the lighting is trash, the animations are trash, it's all just trash.
When I was in my early teens, me and some friends started our own Ultima online shard. When spent 99% of our time adding every item we could find. It was a mess and reminds me exactly of this game.

Can't wait to hear about all the exploits players find now that you can input text in the game thats unfiltered. Time to do some scripting. Have fun guys!
I really don't understand why my sexuality is considered a slur or censor-worthy in MMOs.
Not to mention how many Victorian gentlemen would be horribly confused with all those perfectly normal words being replaced with asterisks, right? :D
Censoring is a stupid thing anyway.
Isn't the point of MMOs as a genre kind of to interact with... other people?
That's what happens in the video, though? It seems to vanish once it fills.
I don't agree that text filtering is the right solution because what happens is that people just find other ways to be offensive. I think there needs to be two things. A client setting that can hide user signs and a way for users to report offensive signs and enforce the old "be nice or you get thrown out".
Ehh, filter's will just be circumvented by people anyway. If anything you'd want a GM
While that's true, you still want at least a basic filter to remove the worst slurs. You'll have to sanitize the inputs anyway, might as well remove some stuff that will get you into hot water if you don't (like the n-word).
@@rolfs2165 n word is fun

what about n word with 1 g less?
Oh nice, you censored the German word "weniger" ("less than")
So you gotta force it only applies to it being space-separated (which I guess you want to do anyway, since else you'd filter sa-turd-day).
But then space separated makes it super trivial fro anyone to circumvent. It's a pain D:
I read the title and I had to click and watch because I'm like "NO!! HOW DO YOU MESS UP SIGNS!"
The fact they are still using unreal basic mannequin yet didnt use the blend tree it literally starts with for animations is ridiculous.
Yeah, that is why I wish some of these youtubers had some background in Unreal and Unity. I mean they are legitimately calling out bad stuff in the game, but it is so much worse when you know Unreal a bit and know how easy it is to fix some of these things.... or in the case of the sitting animation, they broke it to where it is worse than the defaults that Unreal came with. Like moving backwards but keeping the forward animation.
Oh, oh dear
Cant wait to see the slurs!
Also I mean, gay isnt offensive. But once again it _is_ online and a lot of people have the maturity of a 9 year old...
Yeah i know it isnt offesnive, i was simply testing what was and wasnt being filtered. It turns out absolutely nothing is
the word "Sieg Heil" does not mean anything bad but literally "hail victory" was used as a salutation implying respect or reverence even before Hitler, so certain things are not about the meaning but how they are used in context.

Holy cow! It’s like a project someone is working on for a high school assignment. If that was the case good on them...but it is not. This doesn’t even seem like a alpha game, more like an outline. And I feel like that’s putting it nicely...
I considered making a similar comment before, but I feel like it's unnecessarily harsh on high school assignments.
Now I want to know is there a character limit and if you can kill the game the same way some people where doing in minecraft by filling a book with so much text and data it reached critical mass.
I'm actually wondering if you could script in it if there's no limit

So if anyone knows what anarchy servers are in minecraft especially one called 2b2t I've come to realize the longer this "MMO" goes on it's exactly that, possibly the first anarchy MMO, no laws, no rules, just do whatever, write your own code, be as offensive as you want, I almost expect now if I checked it to see giant phallus shaped structures or burning crosses or something. I've condemned World of Warcraft between the game and Blizzard themselves of being a unredeemable dumpsterfire but I feel like in Dreamworld I could make an actual dumpsterfire and the devs would go "Huh, that's creative"...This stuff actually confuses me lol
I thought exactly the same. It's an anarchy mmo lmao
I remember how disgusting Ark: Survival Evolved official servers used to be, since you can drop signs and billboards that aren't filtered
tbh i dont think unfiltered text is a problem, i find that filtered text is a problem i dont like having my speech censored, it should be optional i guess for children, but then at the same time doesnt matter they should learn to ignore words they dont like and parents can quiet easily teach them not to use those words if they dont want them saying them
I don't think it is a problem, but I also don't see anything wrong with filtered text. If it censors dumb, unnecessary shit so be it.
Hey, so… if the text is unfiltered… anyone wanna bet they’ve gone for maximum laziness and it’s just getting squirted, unsanitised, straight into whatever dB backend they’re using?
How long before they get little Bobby Tables’d?
They're saved by their small playerbase. If this were a popular game, someone would have already tried the ol' Bobby Tables by now.
Having said this here, for it to actually happen in New World is kinda eerie.
I can't believe this train wreck is still going on. Just blows my mind.

I'd be surprised if they for once would not push out another disaster.
Well.. no, text filters are the wrong answer to the problem.
Nah.
Or just curb the bulk of it by using a text filter. Some people will circumvent it, but it will be a lot less than if they could just type it out.
I'm finally getting the chance to go through all of these videos. And it just makes me want to try my hand at making a base level game and have it actually function as intended.
My only "design" experience is with RPG Maker circa 2005 (a quest based on my hometown/friend group) that after about 120hrs I lost when my HD borked and never went back😂.
at this point i feel like they doin' this cuz community got them by the b4lls and they just trying to find a way to get out of the predicament they dug themselves into while showing that they doin' something
I’m thinking. People might actually offer to help them for free out of the goodness of their heart. 😅 Benny Hill....? Oh dear.... Thanks for the update Callum! Stay safe. ❤️
I remember APB, a cops and robbers MMO, that allowed players to buy their own cars and decorate them freely with near limitless tools… I saw SO many Nazi symbols, NSFW, etc… it was basically just “racism: the game” for a while…
Can’t think of anything going wrong here…
I don't see the problem with that or with the chat having no filter.
I once filmed myself in first person chasing my friend as he ran and jumped around like a jackass and we strapped a speaker to the camera mic that played the Benny Hill music. We were 13 years old...
I don't see any issue with not censoring chat. Most games only censor the nword if they do it all.
"Bitch fuck shit gay something else offensive :)" He is speaking the language of the gods
I wonder if they sanitize the input ;)

the fact that they add all these stupid emoji's to their patch notes in discord is really stupid and unprofessional but given the entire shitshow history of what I cant call anything but a big scam I am not surprised that they continue to do it.
And they keep using one particular emoji that isn't rendered. Priceless.
I was expecting something worth complaining about, I was wrong. This is clickbait, he's whining because the signs are uncensored.
It is basic shit for a multiplayer game lmao
Constructive criticism. We need more people around like you ^.^ x
I wonder if their signposts are vulnerable to an SQL injection attack.
Cool, now you can put all those questions about the game that would get on banned on Discord on signs for everyone to see.
Do you think if someone starts writing SQL into their signs they can inject it into their databases?
That was also the first thing I thought about 😂 would be funny if someone drops all the databases of their system exposes the possibility of slq injection

I'm still annoyed by the player character's fingers. It seems like the middle finger have been broken and didn't heal properly so it's permanently crooked.
Why are they even still creating the game at this point. They only have like 4 players and the game is a laughing stock within the gaming community.
I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that they make game only on blueprints and just add random features they find on the menu.
Tbh you're doing the marketing for them at this point, since this is just like a patch notes of the month at this point
So weirdly Boundless has both customisable signs and nameable plot areas. I don't know about the signs and I never tried to name my plot anything weird, but I've never seen anything terrible. I am not sure what Boundless did to combat it, or if it's just that the community is so small they actually prefer to play nice.
Those signs, have you tried to input any form of code?
Not saying that you should, only that you could.
There’s no filters on Minecraft signs? Is sign censorship a big thing in gaming?
So, this or Chronicles or Elyria? Which one is worse?
At least you can get comedic value out of dreamworld and they're kinda trying ish even if they'll never make the mmo they claim they are, Elyria just unapologetically shits in their backers mouths and tells them to like it

Chronicles is a dumpster fire, but theyre trying to put it out! They're trying??
Elyria doesnt even exist. And it was almost a scam if not for the lawsuit suddenly scaring them back

For a minute I expected to see you go Bobby Tables on the signs.
However, it's easy to forget such details when their game has like 1 million other issues.
