Paul Scofield was an uncommonly modest man; utterly devoted to his family who also politely declined a knighthood. If I had my way AMFAS would be required viewing in school.
Scofield and Zimmerman both thoroughly deserved their wins. Amazing work. But Wendy Hiller should have won for her own performance in A Man for All Seasons - one of the best performances I've ever seen.

His Thomas Moore was like a kettle on a slow burn, A much more difficult role to play because of the nuance involved. Truly a wonderful piece of work. The film itself was also worthy of Best Picture as well.

Simply do a quick check with imdb, and you'll see that clearly, everyone knew that Paul was the favorite going into the Oscars. Also, another bit of history is that Burton was originally offered the role, but Zimmerman insisted on Scofield who had won the Tony on Broadway in 1960 to reprieve his role. Also, Burton says in his biography that if he had to lose to someone, he was glad it was to Paul. Speaking of Burton, his best performance in my humble opinion, was the year before in The spy who came in from the cold. MUCH better than his scenery chewing work in Virginia Wolf, and that was another year of great performances where he cancelled out with Rod Stieger in The Pawnbroker, two fine performances, as well as Oskar Warner's brilliant work in Ship of fools, but there's no denying that Lee Marvin gave one of the great comic performances in Cat Ballou, so it's the luck of the draw.

The Generation Gap between Christie's eye popping mini and Hiller's almost Victorian gown is priceless! I really love the longer clips!! Wow. Winning Oscars this year was even more impressive when you consider what an incredibly strong year this was for movies. "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf," "Alfie," and "The Sand Pebbles," are all movies that have really stood the test of time and featured fantastic performances.

Rosalind Russell deserved Best Actress twice. First in Mourning Becomes Electra ( "Shutter the windows. Throw out all the flowers." which O'Neill himself called the greatest performance in any version of one of his plays that he had ever seen. And then, needless to say, "Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving!'
Great to see Rosalind Russell, a lady of dramatic talent, of enormous heart and of international class. She was one of several exceptions in a world of attention-seeking emotional cripples. Audrey Hepburn was another one.
"Stars" were almost god-like back then. I remember visiting California back in those days and was actually a bit awed to pass the Beverly Hills sign on a bus. What a nice life so many of them had. I crossed paths with Bob Hope twice. Once overseas at a USO show in 1970 and then again at the Paramount Theater in Seattle years later in the eighties. My mother and I came across the Academy Awards in 1963 and stood outside(when the public could still do such things) and watched John Wayne, Sophia Loren, Gregory Peck and Peter O'Toole walk in on the Red Carpet. I don't even bother to watch anymore.
He was a great director. Three of my favorite movies come to mind: A Man for All Seasons, The Nuns Story and The Sundowners. He also won four Oscars with two for direction, the other besides A Man for All Seasons, coming for From Here To Eternity, which I also liked quite a bit, and it also won Best Picture as well.

Richard Black Scofield still gave a fantastic performance, with less fire and passion than Burton, but sometimes, it can be more difficult to play a nuanced character, the joke was when Burton lost for Lee Marvin in "Cat f**** Ballou"

Burton actually should have won the year before for The Sky Who Came In From The Cold. But, then again, no matter how you look at it, that was a tough year. Marvin won for Cat Ballou, and I think that threw everyone for a loop. This is the last thing you'd expect out of Marvin at that time, and he was excellent. I think Burton and Rod Stieger cancelled each other out, as Stieger was great in The Pawnbroker. It was a toss up between him and Burton.
That was interesting as Liz had already won an Oscar she did not deserve, robbing Deborah Kerr's wonderful work in The Sundowners, another Zinnemann film. She was much better in Wolf, but for my money, it was a toss up between her and Redgrave for Morgan! Note that Vanessa was also wonderful that year in Blowup.
It's unfortunate that Paul Scofield wasn't present to accept his Best Actor award for A Man For All Seasons, the crowning achievement of his acting career. It was McQueen's only acting nomination, and one of Burton's best performances; Arkin was outstanding as well.

I remember Bob Hope as host, the last couple of years he did and then Johnny both classy and funny, and later Billy not so classy but funny as hell. Jimmy did pretty good too. Whoopie was okay, although her dressing up as characters of the films was quirky and well received.

Julie Christie is and was so luminous, so wonderfully fantastic! They did themselves in. They put on the facade of such grandeur, and right off the bat, it was the divorces that cracked the shell. Once that was gone, they weren't glossy anymore. They could have maintained this, but for some reason, they thought the awards of today equated them with this dog and pony show.
No, he did not. I do know, that Columbia did not want Paul Scofield for the lead and Zinnemann insisted on Paul reprising his Tony winning role from 1960. Good that they listened. No one could have done this role the same justice as Scofield. Burton was wonderful in Wolf, but I thought Scofield was better. Nowhere near as showy, but every bit as convincing, if not more.

Burton should have won for 'Virginia Woolf'. Scofield's performance was good - though nowhere near as good as Jeremy Northam's far more accurate portrayal of Thomas More (who was nowhere near the saint Zinnemann's melodramatic fable paints him out to be) in 'The Tudors'.

What a great actor. And what an incredible list of nominees (Im of course reffering to the best actor catagory). Mr. Scofield was indeed with no doubt incredible and phenominal as Sir. Moore in a Man For All Seasons, but I would have voted for Arkin for the Russians Are Coming, the Russians Coming. He was mind-blowing in it, and funny as hell! Though most people Thinks Burton should have won, suberb as George, but I guess and almsost assume More people have also seen Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf, then have seen a Man For All Seasons and the Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming. I dont want to leave out Caine and McQueen etheir both very great. And Mr. Zinnemann is an incredible director and prodecuer too! :D

It's unfortunate that Paul Scofield wasn't present to accept his Best Actor award for A Man For All Seasons, the crowning achievement of his acting career. It was McQueen's only acting nomination, and one of Burton's best performances; Arkin was outstanding as well.

I remember Bob Hope as host, the last couple of years he did and then Johnny both classy and funny, and later Billy not so classy but funny as hell. Jimmy did pretty good too. Whoopie was okay, although her dressing up as characters of the films was quirky and well received.

Julie Christie is and was so luminous, so wonderfully fantastic! Great stars Audrey Hepburn, Rosalind Russell, Bob Hope, Steve McQueen, Micheangelo Antonioni, Shirley MacLaine, Fred Zinnemman, Mike Nichols, Liz Taylor, Wendy Hiller, and many more, I am sorry but what a difference with today shallow show just basically made of fashion gossip and so-so movies, not to mention, stars who are rarely that impressive!

They did themselves in. They put on the facade of such grandeur, and right off the bat, it was the divorces that cracked the shell.
Once that was gone, they weren't glossy anymore.

No, he did not. I do know, that Columbia did not want Paul Scofield for the lead and Zinnemann insisted on Paul reprising his Tony winning role from 1960. Good that they listened. No one could have done this role the same justice as Scofield. Burton was wonderful in Wolf, but I thought Scofield was better. Nowhere near as showy, but every bit as convincing, if not more.
He should have thanked Scofield, Shaw and Hiller especially.

Yes, a worthy win but one gets the feeling Paul Scofield couldn't have cared less. Did not even show up. And the Best Actor award should have gone to Richard Burton for the Virginia Woolf...
Burton should have won for 'Virginia Woolf'. Scofield's performance was good - though nowhere near as good as Jeremy Northam's far more accurate portrayal of Thomas More (who was nowhere near the saint Zinnemann's melodramatic fable paints him out to be) in 'The Tudors'.

What a great actor. And what an incredible list of nominees (Im of course reffering to the best actor catagory). Mr. Scofield was indeed with no doubt incredible and phenominal as Sir. Moore in a Man For All Seasons, but I would have voted for Arkin for the Russians Are Coming, the Russians Coming. He was mind-blowing in it, and funny as hell! Though most people Thinks Burton should have won, suberb as George, but I guess and almsost assume More people have also seen Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf, then have seen a Man For All Seasons and the Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming. I dont want to leave out Caine and McQueen etheir both very great. And Mr. Zinnemann is an incredible director and prodecuer too! :D
