Getting the executives in jail for intentionally ignoring a crisis in the making is a good start. But it won't upset the share holders any. Lets be honest, any fine for a company should *at least* be higher than the gain they got, or tried to get. Bit hard to calculate maybe, but you can always low-ball it to 100% of the revenue from the first of the month the accident happened until the last of the month the contamination has been fully cleaned up, along with all medical costs for anyone living in the affected town for the next 10 years.
The executives literally have nothing to do with the day to day operations of the railroad. They don't even see the workers when they tour the system, all workers have to hide when the Executive Train goes through.
@@cp368productions2 Yet they decide the budget and lobby for necessary regulations to both be cut and exploited. They also fight the unions of those regular workers tooth and nail to prevent them from getting basic things like sick leave and a day off once a month.
Just saying, china charged the executives of a baby formula company in the deaths of THREE children due to bad formula. Sure would be cool if we saw that here.
Those "inconvenience checks" often come with strings attached for the folks who accept them. Most of the time it removes the ability to sue at a later date for damages.
Yeah, thats the exact same tactic frakers did when getting arrangements to go through private property. Sell your rights to ownership for ~$5000. Your tap water is brown? Too bad you cant sue or get any compensation.

Thanks for talking about the environmental disaster in East Palestine, Ohio. It didn't get much coverage when it first happened. Besides the fish killed, thousand of birds died. It's just so heartbreaking. We can't let these greedy creeps get away with this anymore.
Im not a nasty person - but... East Palestine, Ohio - Voted 74% for the Republicans they voted for deregulation, corporate rule, the worship of profit over people... EDIT - they just never thought it would happen to THEM, they thought the disasters and environmental problems would happen to OTHER people.
I live in Ohio I'm not close to East Palestine but it's a disaster. Personally I think the whole town should relocate the soil and water is contaminated will be a toxic waste for decades. Hopefully the residents will file a class-action suit or maybe the Ohio attorney general's office will do something.
I remember DT gave a speech once bragging about how many deregulations he accomplished, the crowd started cheering... It's hilarious and scary how fools will cosign against their own best interest.
I saw a conservative pundant try to tie Pete Buttigieg under the bus like he was personally responsible because he is the correct transportation secretary. I fear republican voters are not smart enough to link the deregulation of the railway to this disasters caused by that deregulation.
The only reason many heard about it timely was because the police arrested a reporter for reporting on it...that and most media outlets are part of mega-corperate entities that very well could have ties to the railroads... Can't blame the reporters as there have plenty on scene it's just those in charge of the media outlets control what's allowed on their platforms and any events that can effect their bottom line is omitted or played down to what should be criminally suppressed status
@Alejandro Pasillas We actually don't have any in my town either. We didn't have any in my East Texas Town. I have seen them in Austin and in Houston though. 🤣🤣🤣
Why choose only one way to hold companies accountable, prevent accidents, or help victims recover? Let's do them all! Higher taxes, fines that actually hurt, force them to pay for cleanup, obligations to pay employees better, stronger safety standards, more stringent inspections.... All of it and more!
I bet if they accept the inconvenience checks, they waive their rights to sue in the future if they suffer adverse health due to the explosion. I hate corporations that value money over ppl
I'm a little surprised Seth and his team failed to mention that Ohio state governor rejected federal aid when first offered, so it's not like the Feds didn't try initially help.
No one will consider him for the VP slot if he show environmental concerns, and continues his stance on climate change and dismissing our archaic system of funding schools.
@Dreemurr Delm Can you possibly leave the state? Easier said than done, I know, but it's definitely not safe to be breathing within miles of that disaster.
The video at 8:10 of that woman in Ohio whose chickens all died in the night is absolutely terrifying. (Nearly) literally "canaries in a mine shaft." I'm worried for the people who are forced to stay there due to work/family/lack of money to evacuate.
As an Ohio resident, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the focus tonight on East Palestine. It’s a story that didn’t get the coverage it deserved for too long, and I’m glad you’re covering it now. ❤
The Rational National with David Doel covered a report by The Lever that goes into the East Palestine chemical rail derailment and a second video. The Humanist Report also has a video on the cruel event as well, titled “Train Derailment Poisons a City in Ohio But Residents Can’t Afford To Leave”
Wow, I do hope the people there have well insulated houses and windows to shelter, I live in a town with a company that uses toxic substances and we have a yearly drill.
Is it really pronounce Palessteen? I live on the other side of the state in Lima (like the bean, not leema like in Peru), near carroh (a, like in cat), not kie-roh like in Egypt, and Bell Fountain (not Bellefontaine - the way it is spelled, near well you get it - a bunch of illiterate morons from way back.
Since the train derailment, there’s been like 3 more disasters. We’ve got people that are not even safe in their home and they are not getting any help. And nobody is answering for it.
I looked up how common train derailment is and the first googled website was an ad for a train derailment accident attorney. The more you know. Edit: But you are probably referring to The earthquake in Turkey/Syria, and probably some other stuff I don't know about yet.

I hadn't heard of the whales thing until yesterday. I work for a power utility who is investing in offshore wind, and during an all hands yesterday someone asked if we were killing whales with the project. Now I know where the stupid came from
The problem with stupid is it rarely if ever, has the urge to improve. We didn't really think Trump would take all the stupid with him once his repudiation at the hands of a semi-informed electorate sank in? Florida can't handle any more stupid, full saturation set at the moment Desantis understood the con.
there is literally only one source online claiming wind parks killing whales. the webseite is called "stop these things" does not have an impressum and praises "relaiable coal power". now you know where MTG gets her information ,-)
This reminded me of the scientist the CA judge asked about nanochips in vaccines in 2020 and I remember thinking I bet the guy was SO grateful for the mask he was wearing, hiding his expression. He still began his answer with, "Sorry, I just had to take a minute to compose myself..." Best response I've ever seen to such a freaking idiotic question. THESE PEOPLE ARE IN CHARGE OF THINGS. HOW?!! Your former president only hates windmills so much because he lost a lawsuit to the Scottish government trying to get a windfarm removed because it 'ruined the view' from one of his golf courses over here. Then he lost the lawsuit over legal fees and he actually had to pay to keep operating his golf courses. That's when he started his weird noises and anti-windmill campaign.
Please do not ever stop doing the Trump bit about people coming up to him crying... I know the setup and I still love it every time it happens. I even think the jackals love it...
The Ohio thing really gets to me. There were other youtubers and non-mainstream info sites that were talking about this before the news could. Some of the journalists who tried getting a story ended up being arrested while the people with cams filmed it. They didn't even start an evacuation until word got out about the crash against the companies will, from people who started warning others about it early. Not to mention, the train companies PR person I think it was refused to talk about the kind of breaks used on the train. Train workers were calling for better breaks and safety on the train for a while. It's just irritating that they tried to keep news about it low while the chemical gas and smoke was spreading.
I got 2 push notifications from news apps when they announced the "controlled" burn. I dont rely on TH-cam for my news. Both apps are major news outlets.
Not the first time in red Ohio. Just sweep those massive spills and environmental destruction under the rug, with a reassuring little speech when you realize that your kids were swimming in that lake or river or stream.
You’re just jealous. Obviously you have heard Santos has actually prevented many train accidents to happen when he was a conductor. Once he jumped from the moving train and lifted the derailing train back on the tracks. He did it with his left and as he was saving a puppy with his right hand. The subject is very dear to him because his Jewish mother died in the train that destroyed the WTC towers on 9/11. Generally you should not blame anyone. It’s a personal choice to live in a place where an accidents happens. You get what you ask if you want to have BLM and LBQTG people around. They eat babies and want socialism when they say government should regulate business. It’s not business’s fault when an accident happen. Who asks people to inhale toxic fumes and no one has ever proven that cancer or other sicknesses exist or that there is any proof that anything related to business can cause them. No one asks why didn’t Biden prevent this to happen. He had let all the Mexicans in and allowed Ukraine to provoke a war Trump could have prevented by making a deal with Russia with Kim from North Korea. It’s plain and simple that Obama and Clinton caused the accident from the pizzeria’s basement using vaccines, 5G and windmills.
I lost it when Seth talked about how Wally was passive-aggressively tapping the cue cards. I ABSOLUTELY can see him doing that. "Come on boss, we're right here, let's get this done. I gotta get home so I can lay in bed for our next HR Zoom meeting".
I’m really happy Seth talked about the East Palestine disaster. I was honestly getting pretty disheartened by how little coverage it was seeming to get in the mainstream media. But once again I’m validated in loving Seth’s whole team. Also, Wally passive aggressively tapping the cards is on point.

I thought the same thing about the MTG's whale/windmill statement. When she said that I thought, 1) wtf?, Then 2) does she think whales fly? To which I immediately thought, 3) yeah, that tracks. And moved on so I was ready for the next GOP wtf moment. I'm betting heavily on Santos currently.
Even if she was actually concerned with the well-being of whales, Oil should have been her first target as oil spills do massive amounts of damage to the environment, and the impact can last for decades.

Conservatives are too brainwashed to have independent thoughts of their own.
@SBY77 I said "you" don't have to fact-check it. I said nothing about "fact-checkers." I do all my own fact-checking. For instance, when Marjorie Taylor Greene announced on the floor of the House of Representatives that one elementary school is receiving $5 billion for one single class, which is usually only taught in law school and no one knew what shr was talking about. That didn't require much fact-checking. I think she just made it up on the spot, like everything else she says. This is an extremely stupid woman we're talking about. Absolutely insane. One of the reasons Norfolk Southern is making so much money is that they don't invest in maintenance. Their profit directly caused this disaster. Why are they allowed to keep it?
Yes!!!! I worked for Conrail from 1979-1984, many freight crews consisted of an engineer, fireman, conductor and two brakemen. The Class 1 railroads want to run huge trains with their ridiculous Precision Scheduled Railroading with ONE engineer and Positive Train Control. If a train had an issue like a hot box, detached air hose or what have you, supposedly a conductor would be transported to the scene of the issue. Norfolk Southern also tends not to use DPU’s (distributed power), so their trains are long, heavy and unwieldy All in the name of profit for the railroad executives
Same business model as Southwest Airlines. No investment in technology and during one bad weather event, they completely collapsed and couldn’t get back up for a week. People are still out of pocket for that.
Damn I commented the other day about Seth not talking about the disaster in Ohio, but I never expected him to actually talk about it. Mega props to you and the team for proving me wrong!
The whole "whales killed by wind turbine projects" thing is actually just astroturfing by the oil industry. There's some good articles linking oil donations directly to the organization that first started yelling about this. Even though the whales were dying before the projects even began and for some reason are not dying in any other area of the world where offshore wind turbines are being placed.
It is absolutely true that whales have been beached near Atlantic City and Brigantine NJ in increased numbers. Two whales in December, 2022 and two more in January 2023. A simple google search will confirm that for you. There are marine and wildlife preservation organizations in the area; some were started in the 1980s, so these are not kooks raising these concerns. Four whales in two months is concerning, especially because only five whales beached in all of 2022. The most likely culprit is boat strikes. However, there were pre construction surveys that used sonar, and since whales do rely on sonar it is not unreasonable to investigate that. I'm just not sure that large numbers of dead whales are a joke, especially before the investigation has occurred. MTG is a joke; whales and marine preservation is not a joke. She probably heard 25% of a news story and then turned that into a rant. Seth has a staff to write his jokes. I wish they knew how to google things.
One man's decision miles and miles and miles from another man's home has so much impact. The leader of millions of people makes a decisions that impacts every single individual in one way or another and then walked away to a golf course.
I just love how most of these comments have at least one reply that is not showing up. You know it's some Trumper or MTG sycophant that is raging into the abyss.
Yes!!! I’m in Ohio and it maddening not knowing what’s safe right now. My family is operating as if we’re under a boil advisory because we don’t trust what the state is saying. This is becoming very scary for more and more people.
I remember when I became aware of the world being alarmed by whales and dolphins beaching themselves. It was in the 1980s. The first offshore windfarm wasn't built until 1991, and it was in Denmark. Depending on the source, there are currently only one, or two, offshore windfarms off America, and construction on the first only began in 2015. Maybe MTG thinks that if whales are harmed by offshore windfarms, it's because windfarms also produce tachyons that allow the effects to time travel backwards?
LOWLY WORM! Those Richard Scarry books helped teach my little boy to read long before any of his friends. He loved them, and we spent many happy hours reading them. His first grade teacher jumped me at our first parent-teacher conference: "What have you done with this child?" She was having a hard time finding books that could keep him interested; when tested, his reading comprehension was at an 8th grade, 5th month level.
Loved those books as a kid in the 70's. They used to be in every pediatrician's waiting rooms. My grandmother and I used to flip through looking for the little golden ladybug, too.
In Belgium the off shore wind farms provide 10% of the energy and we have the longest running monitoring of the changes for the environment. The effect are generally positive but we did have to adapt to lower the underwater noise and are looking into how to adapt to the periods of intense bird migration we have here. We understand better why singing birds sometimes collide with the windmills and are proposing future measures.
This sounds like a shockingly sensible approach we could adopt with huge bipartisan support from most Democrats and that one Republican Seth manages to corner with a joint. 🤷♂️
Far more birds are killed by housecats and glass window buildings. I've read that modern wind turbines have taken bird strikes into consideration, at least by being bigger and slower.
Lets be honest though, they could literally say whatever they want and they'd still get close to the same number of votes. Most of their remaining voters are so deep into the sunk cost fallacy that it's likely they'll twist anything said into proof about how they are right and *this* time it'll finally work out just like they always wanted.
That's actually the saddest part to me. The fact that Republican voters are so uneducated, and politically ignorant, that they vote for the very people who make policies that keep them in poverty.
Four months ago, a train derailed a few blocks from my house. It damaged an underpass and several tankers spilled parafin all over the place. Within a week or so, the trains were running again. However, the underpass (one of the main routes in/out of Sandusky) is still closed because of damage to a pumping station under the tracks. Hmmm...shouldn't the tracks be stopped until the street is re-opened? I mean, if there's that much damage...
i have a feeling if the residents accept anything right now from the rail company, they won't be able to properly seek restitution for the full extent of damages that we've yet to discover.
You’d think I’d get tired of this joke! Instead each time Seth is doing the Trump impersonation and I can sense this line is coming, I start chuckling in anticipation.
FALSE. Maybe true when talking about manufacturing, that was true. LIke the Pinto etc etc. However you would have to insane to think that a Railroad would allow the rails they OWN... to be destroyed. Railroads ONLY make $$ when moving freight!
@dennisg4053 I lived beside the railroad the biggest part of my life. So many people died of cancer in that area until the epa was formed. They don't care about the environment, they care about profit. Back then you saw people often working on the tracks. Today, not nearly as often. People had wells back then, that those leaky chemicals, I am sure, got in the ground water. Now they don't have wells but the public water source comes from the drawing of that same area also much of the track is beside the river that feeds the public water system. Do you really think they care about that? They care their rail is shut down and cars having to be repaired, taking out of their pocket, which our tax dollars will probably pay for. The community will suffer for decades because our government is bought and paid for by corporations, who have cut back their safety standards to the cost of regular people.
I had a coughing fit from laughing when Seth was mimicking Trump recounting the dastardly villain at the train station asking him to roll back the rules on train brakes! Seth, thanks to you and the team for the laughs and the consistently high quality of show. Love from Spain.

Having seen so many movies where the chemical spill gets downplayed and then turns out that its soaked into the buildings and soil poisoning the community for years, causing xyz serious medical problems. I mean, it's like regulation to prevent corporations from creating unsafe or deadly situations is absolutely necessary for public safety.
There’s the economic concept of an “externality” -- that is, a cost that a company is responsible for, but they don’t have to pay, because it’s somebody else’s problem. Like when they mess up the environment or poison people. This is why we have regulatory authorities, to ensure that a company very much bears liability, particularly financial liability, for the damage and hurt that it creates. Then hopefully it will think twice before creating new “externalities” in future.
All these years later and it looks like we need Erin Brokovich and the team, otherwise the large corp is winning. My heart goes to all the East Palestine residents. And the fact that the derailment could have been prevented since the workers were flagging that risk earlier, it’s just horrible.
@Nagdalena S Brown Communities have had it bad for quite sometime. Local governments still actively put these communities in harm. The train derailment his horrible. The disgusting thing is the white residents will likely be better taken care of and Flint, MI residents are still suffering as are Indians on the Rez.
The first thing I heard about the train derailment, officials swore there was 0 risk 3:30. I knew it was garbage, based upon the chemicals involved. Again: they said there was absolutely zero risk. It was the first thing they said.

I've voted for 4 different parties at home - and that's not even all my options. It really removes the diametrically opposed opinions and the idea there can be no middle ground. I genuinely believe US politics needs multiple parties. 2 parties can't adequately represent the views of 300 million people. We have 5 main parties, plus some smaller ones for 5 million people. It might take a few decades to change fully, but I really think it's needed.
@@gmun2248 The US have in fact multiple parties. Their winner takes all, district system is the problem. The Rail executives should be facing criminal negligence charges. Losing shareholder value is not as big a deterrent as possible jail time.
🚬👱🏻♂️IM A SPAMBOT TROLL ROBO GEEK

Not to mention, the train companies PR person I think it was refused to talk about the kind of breaks used on the train.

@Zach Hogan You must be older, and/or a classic movie buff.

Depending on the source, there are currently only one, or two, offshore windfarms off America, and construction on the first only began in 2015.

It is. And it exists. The problem is enforcement. This is one area that the local police can't police, and no one else steps up to fill the void.
Best press secretary ever!! Her expression is like oh god not this fool again. I just fell in love with this one.
Yeah, that expression deserved a mention.
@magdalenas83 Erin Brockovich is already on the case--I saw her on TV a couple days ago.... 😉
There actually has been a incident with a Whale in the sky … next to a bowl of petunias.
Oh, not again!
Amazing. Thank you!
MTG is crazier than a sprayed roach
A roach with THC!
If only there was a spray for insurrections and failed wannabe dictators.
The first thing I heard about the train derailment, officials swore there was 0 risk 3:30. I knew it was garbage, based upon the chemicals involved. Again: they said there was absolutely zero risk. It was the first thing they said.
It's always the first thing they say. Keep their feet to the fire! "Officials/officers" always get the first word. Don't let theirs be the last word!

All the late night comedy hosts are better than the network news readers.
Well when the free press/media is under threat of violence and imprisonment, it's hard for them to focus on their job. Thanks trump, you successfully turned the conservative party into one that despises the free press that the founders knew was important for healthy democracy.
Unfortunate but true! Have you noticed that network news reports heavily on weather!? It’s a joke!

Yes, Except Buttigieg is not in charge of the response no matter what people think. DOT works with Congress in creating regulations (his potential tie to Ohio). Someone has to sue the train company and break them ! It the only thing they respect. Kick them in their money.
They said they have given 1 million dollars and that was a lot. So much bs. They should send and pay for bottled water to every resident affected by this disaster, they should also offer to buy these homes to anyone wants to move away from this train caused accident.
Thank you Seth!! They must be exposed for how much they make and how they are not regularly updating, expecting and repairing these rails to prevent this. They must pay more to these communities and be taxed more.

As a blue collar worker, I can’t believe my coworkers follow the GOP when they are actively taken advantage of by them.
As a European in the US (moved back home last year), it really blew my mind when people thought they 'had' to vote for trump "because I'm a Republican". It either came from their upbringing (yay, freedom!), or their church (umm...?) or just the weird Red team vs Blue team politics where there is this myth that once you pick a team, you can't change it.
If the US switch to a German system, with representatives from districts (local winners) and the rest of "parliament" filled in to represent the popular vote in the whole country, you'd see a whole range of other parties represented in Congress. Gerrrymandering would have no impact. The GOP would be a minority party with no power on federal level. Add in priority voting, and the whole political landscape would be much more diverse and representing the people!
But now the republican party has now become the party of the big lie and anti democrecy

A good definition of "Woke" to use back at them; quote the words of DeSantis own lawyers…
When asked to define it in a case where someone was fired for being "too woke", DeSantis’ general counsel, Ryan Newman, responded that the term means …
*“the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them.”*
IMHO that definition should be adopted verbatim and attributed to Ron DeSantis just to mess with them (yes it was his lawyer, let DeSantis have to make that clarification).
And whenever a MAGA brings up Wokeness say "oh you mean…" quote that, and then credit DeSantis.

Smoke from the train fire was visible on the pittsburg weather map. It's horrific.

I’ve even planning. I’m leaving Ohio for a long time and this whole ordeal with this train crash is just further proof that I’m making the correct choice. @@raymondm.9954 How DO they define it, because my assumed definition is "aware of systematic prejudices and the culture that supports and reaffirms them" and it's difficult for me to see that as a bad thing. It's a very specific thing to get upset over, and yet at the same time says so many horrible things about you if you do.
So I went ahead and checked an actual dictionary. Woke is defined as, "aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues, especially issues of racial and social justice." Which, yeah, that's basically what I said. Which still leaves the question: which part of that is so upsetting to Republicans? Point to the part in the definition that you find is causing so many social issues as to "wokeness" being a bigger issue than, you know, all the social issues that woke individuals stay actively alert to. Go on.
