Wife adapted plans and made a daybed in about 6hours (took her 2+ hours to cut and chisel the base). She used only what we already had around, except for some metal sliders, so our cost was only $4. She lowered the back so the 20inch tall cushion just sits against the back, without being attached. The box spring took the place of the base boards. She attached little nickel sized metal sliders to the bottom ($4 at our hardware store) so she could move it around by herself. She'd been trying to figure out how to make a daybed with a solid "couch-like" back for months, and this was perfect. Thanks very much!!

I greatly admire your design philosophy. Not every piece of furniture is to my taste, but the ideas behind them definately are. Cheers for the videos!

So the lumber alone was 108 here in tx. Since it was already more we made a few changes when we built it. We extended to 6ft, used 4 2x6s for the seat, 2x12s for the legs and back. The left over 2x12 and 2x6 was just right to put arms at each end (2x12x10 screwed into seat, 2x6x24 screwed on top). Wood for this build was 120ish JoAnns had foam on sale so a 4in thick seat and a 1in back (goes all way to seat). A full size bedsheet tucks behind back and under foam on seat. Looks way better than bungied partial back.

ruins the whole "modern" look of the sofa

I guess you could use thick duct tape for the front and attach it to the bungee cord in the back, so the look isn't entirely ruined, just flatter too.

Very cool bench/sofa. If you didn't put any fabric on it and just painted it or stained it with an outdoor stain you would have a nice outdoor bench as well.

Also the way the cushions are secured makes it easy to put them on or remove them so you could still use them with it.

So simple and straight forward, thats why I love your builds. Most twos have stores with pre made cushions for this style of sofa, so you could design your piece around the size of the pre made cushions.

a carpentry tip: use the square as your straight edge while cutting, just make a mark at the length, hold the square in your left hand and the skill saw in your right, butt them together and slide along the board until the blade matches the mark, then just slide the skill saw along the side of the square. you will get the perfect cut every time without having to follow a line.

as a 'young person'. literally can find a couch on craiglist for FREE in the surrounding states any day of the week. if you're more particular you can find a 1940-1950-1960s couch, that's going to be REALLY easy to reupholster. as long as you can sew a straight line, and a zipper.. but if you know what you're looking for, you can find something that looks 70s or 80's but is actually an early couch that's already been reupholstered from its original state.
I also believe for you aussie folks gumtree is your version of craigslist.

This could also double as a bed if:
    1) another plan is added to the back rest, and
    2) the back rest is attached using a hinge..or something similar that can be tightened and loosened. Heck idk these carpentry terms.
    This is very beautiful.

How square are your cross cuts with your circular saw? I can see you laying out the lines, using a square and ruler, but when you do the actual cut, you're essentially free hand.. I just know if I try something like that, I'll end up with all the angles except 90..

Hey Ben, I've been a big fan for a while, really love the content you put so much time and effort into sharing with us. I have no experience whatsoever making anything with wood, much less building actual furniture, so I'm sorry if this sounds silly, but making this big enough to fit a twin bed, would involve probably adding another 2x10 and making the support/leg part longer and that's pretty much it, yes? Well and probably lengthening + widening the underlying support structure to fit the placement of the legs, unless that's unsafe and you would recommend adding a middle leg? Again, thanks for the projects and can't wait to see future ones!

Thank you for sharing. I won't say this is perfect for me, but ... oh, there is a storage couch someone else designed that is also good, but, not quite what I need ... and, there is a platform and some cushions sold by IKEA that are good, but, not quite what I need. Your idea answers some of the concerns with the storage couch and different concerns with the platform. So, I think I could come up with my own, which would be somewhere in the middle of the storage sofa and this one, but, in smaller pieces to, in that way, be a bit like the IKEA platform.
    So, thank you.
