I have every one of Rod's albums, books. Like so many people. I bought this album when it first came out and see. in 1967. I am 75 years old. and I think I'm still the romantic that I was then. I listen to this music. and it takes me right back to a very special time in my life.. Whoever posted this. I'd bless you.

I bought the 33 RPM vinyl version of this beautiful album in 1967. This beautiful album changed my life the first time I heard it. I was 27 at the time and am now 76. I have been of super fan of Rod McKuen's songs and poetry for almost 50 years. Rod McKuen gave me so many hours of pleasure. Rod..RIP

I too Don feel they way you do. I am 58 and this music still pulls such emotions, emotions of times long past, the good, the bad and all in all, some of the best days I had in my life. Yes, those days were many years ago, but if I close my eyes and listen to this music, my mind travels back to a happier time. I too say RIP Rod, and thank you Anita for creating the magic you both created.

Don Adams. When much younger I used to listen to this all the time. Over time, the vinyl disc got 'lost' among so many others. This morning I was clearing my flat and found it and I 'remembered'. I thought, I wonder if it's on TH-cam? And it is(there was no TH-cam those days). So here I am listening to Rod McKuen again after all these years. And my life feels better and lighter.

I bought this award-winning album in 1967 when it was released like so many people. I have not heard it since 1971 when I left home. It has been 50 years since I heard it and as soon as I heard the ocean waves, Rod's voice, and Anita's music it was like I had heard it yesterday. Thank you for giving me back a joy I never thought I would experience again.

I was-am the same age as you when I was flipping through albums at a record store in SF in 72, still have it still listen to it, my age group considered me an oddity at the time for listening to poetry- music like that but I'm still listening to today, and the emotion it generated at 19 is still the same at 67 I guess some things don't change and that can be good!

In the Fall of '68, having just turned 22 y/o, I was 1st exposed to Rod McKuen. I had a big time crush on a girl, & she loved his music & poetry, so I spent an afternoon, listening to him, trying to make a + impression. Truth be told, I was not ready for the music, or the poetry--------NOT at all. And, the young lady, sensing my distaste, ended us ---------right away. And so it was for several years. In '72, from a used record bin, I decided to buy " The Sea " , having no idea of what I was about to hear. Well, it took another 2 years ------summer of '74------before I finally decided to play the album ! Yes, I had it that long before finally listening. But when I did, I was amazed at what I heard, & even more surprised at McKuen's words, even if another voice was saying them. I LOVED the album ! And today, at 78 y/o, I love it even more . The musical marriage of Anita Kerr & Rod McKuen, was magic------and I love & appreciate them even more as I am older. -----------------MJL, 78 y/o

The San Sebastien Strings was collaborative work between Rod McKuen and Anita Kerr who composed, arranged and orchestrated the music. Many people posting here don’t seem to realize that without the extraordinary musical talent of Anita Kerr these recordings would not be here for us to enjoy !

I got a pirated copy in cassette in Vietnam. Battery operated recorder from Sears. Man I was in heaven on quiet notes on the fire base when I was able to listen to this and a Mancini copy of another group. How great those small things were. Guess it's why as my life ebbs it's course away, things don't seem so profound or worrisome. What the hell, it's 50 years later and it sounds terrific. Think I'll run over and find Henry.

Yes, I should have explained- I was intrigued as to whether or not you knew 'kev lo'. And no problem- I'm really glad that people are enjoying the uploads. Most people have the same story- they lost their old McKuen/San Sebastian Strings LPs and they were able to come find those lost songs here. I'm happy that I can facilitate that rekindling and nostalgia.

I got a trove of Rod's records from my mom when I was maybe 17. She had them since she was younger. I can't explain how much it's meant to me over the years. I'm now 36 and my mom and Rod are both gone, and life has been pretty hard on me in many ways. I remember laying in my bunk in Iraq listening to this album in the hot nights. Even still, I feel like there's just something inexplicably difficult to put into words about these records. I'm glad they've been a part of my life.

Awesome! The Sea and The Earth are by far the best albums by The San Sebastian Strings, in my opinion. The other two Sea albums, "Home to the Sea" and "The Soft Sea" are not bad- just different and not as good as the first one. I happen to think the rest of the handful of San Sebastian Strings albums are ok at best. I don't think they manage to hit the highs of the The Sea and The Earth, but they're fine. I would suggest listening to Rod McKuen's spoken word albums if you like The Sea. He wrote the poetry for all the San Sebastian Strings and recites the poetry on The Earth and many of the other SSS albums. I have a handful of them uploaded on this channel- converted from vinyl to digital because they aren't available digitally. "Stanyan Street & Other Sorrows", "Listen to the Warm", "Moment to Moment", "Lonesome Cities" - all classic Rod McKuen spoken word albums. You can find them on this channel. Long response. Yeesh. haha

This is the one & only record I own of Rod & Anita's collaborative work. I'll admit this : when I bought it, I wasn't quite sure just WHY I was doing it. I respected The Anita Kerr Singers and all the great back-up work they did in Nashville . But as for Rod --hmmmm--I just wasn't so sure. --then, I got home & played the record --again, & again, & again. It's a work of art like nothing else I know of, & I treasure the LP ! I had to play it last night; Rod's passing deeply touched me, & I'm not really sure why. Maybe it's from my years living in The City--I don't fully know. RIP, Rod. Wolfsky9, 68 y/o Now

This is really superb with the usual Mckuen magic. The voice artist is great, does anyone know who he is?

@@ivansampaio1635 That's interesting. The liner notes to the album quote McKuen as saying it didn't matter, he was just a friend. Thanks.

@lucyedinburgh No kidding! I'm actually a fairly new Rod McKuen/San Sebastian Strings fan, and I just dig it all so much. Just so you know, you can buy The Sea on iTunes for ten bucks--otherwise I'll be putting up more tracks from that album pretty soon.

Some of the worst poetry I've ever heard. Trite and juvenile. If you like this, you know NOTHING about great poetry.

I won't go on a tangent arguing whether Rod McKuen's poetry was 'good' or 'bad.' I put them in quotes because it's all subjective anyway. But, it's well known that his 'poetry' was not well received by most academics and critics. However, his words should be taken for what they are; conversational. A quote from Rod himself in reference to the San Sebastian Strings spoken word recordings: "...because this was written to be read aloud to music it is more conversational than poetic. No apology, just a statement of fact." Anyway, just wanted to give you my view. Would welcome any further debate. :)

Gilesset, you may have missed the boat on this album. Taken as an entire audio experience, it is quite amazing. I don't know where you were in the 60s, but if this had crossed your earwaves, you might feel differently and more appreciative. Of course, everyone is entitled to an opinion. Most of those commenting and enjoying the posting of this poetry and music felt a depth of emotion that is a little rare from a long-playing record. Perhaps it is unnecessary for you to attempt to punch holes in bubbles you know nothing about.

+Sharon Brooks Actually, that's quite funny. I LIVE right near the Pacific Ocean. Instead of closing my eyes with Rod's poetry/music, I'd rather close my ears. There's a reason he is NEVER included in any major collection of American poetry. It's Hallmark Greeting Card verse. Try TS Eliot...........

@@rodmckuenfan This album is more like a popular song. It's not meant to be Beethoven or Shakespeare When I first heard this 50 years ago I was very much in love with someone. There is something that these verses combined with the music does that resonates with a lot of people, especially someone who is in love. To this day I still love this album and still love the one who brought this album to my attention.
