All-star cast in this one, including Don Rickles of all people. He wasn't a bad actor... actually trained as a dramatic actor... but I never quite accepted him in this role. I kept waiting for him to call Clint a hockey puck and turn this into a comedy. Lol. It's akin to Mr. Rogers being cast in Gunfight at The O.K. Corral. Still, a classic with memorable action, as shown here.
Its funny how those film made me thought that german soldiers are actually a bunch of nubs and always defeat in battle for like 1/3 of my life until i learned the actual history.
The movie was made in Yugoslavia. There is a lot of Eastern Bloc weaponry in it (the American sniper uses a Russian rifle, the "Tiger" tank is plywood and tin plating on a T-34 and so on...).
Always loved this film, but one aspect always bothered me. The deaths of MIchell and Job really affect everyone. But when Oddball loses two tanks, a total of ten men, no one blinks an eye.
2:31 Both firing at same target but one fires at the ground while the other fires into the air. Also the machine gunner in the truck is an Oberfeldwebel. He would not be manning a gun! And I don't think Kelly's collar-length hair is quite regulation is it?
The German gunner is Unterfeldwebel(no pips on shoulderboard), not Oberfeldwebel. Oberfeldwebel has 2 pips on the shoulderboard, Feldwebel(NCO standing behind the gunner) having 1 pip on the shoulderboard.
I'd wish they would remake this with today's standard of gore/realism. A semi packed with a bunch of soldiers being shelled point blank like that, limbs and chunks of flesh, blood and brain would spray all over the place... Although... It would probably not be that much fun and heroic as it is now, I guess.
well i would not say a few americans destroying an entire germane troop with full auto weapons only and the germans not hiting a shot and for some reason not having grenades is realistic

@@foreverblueclassics But this time we're in real trouble mate! We sink into enemy's attack from both flanks! Mein Gott! We must stop them, or we will all die!
nope. in the Wehrmacht it got hammered into the soldiers to conserve ammunition and fire only short 2-4 round bursts if neccesary, otherwise use single fire. this is relevant for the SMG´s but also heavy MG´s like MG34 and MG42. and i bet on it, that the US Army did the same with their soldiers. Uncontrolled spray and pray is a hollywood myth.
Machine guns were - by design - inaccurate. As one veteran explained it to me, "What's the point of killing the same guy three times? Much better to spread the bad news around." Having said that, short bursts were the order of the day. Sustained firing, which is the stuff of too many films, would cause the barrel to overheat in record time. Having to change the barrel in the middle of a fire-fight is something best avoided.
@@lomax343 the innaccuracy is overstated tho. i have the MG Gunner Qualification in the Bundeswehr with the MG3 on Lafette and Bipod. The MG3 is by design just a modified and modernised MG42. For minimum qualification you had to hit 4 out of 5 Targets on 300-900m, for that you got 15 rounds in the belt. the MG42/MG3 is precise enough to engage and hit targets on 900m with 2-3 round bursts if you are a trained gunner.
Luckily the other Germans at the camp failed to hear the gun fire, so didn't engage. They also didn't notice they had quite a few men missing, therefore no need to report the presence of the enemy in the vicinity.
The Americans do like the dramatic effect in films Lets Do a full auto Shoot Lads Woot woot they all dance like kids then Action! It is amazing that nearly every German soldier was either a Gefreiter or a Unteroffiziere as every one had MP40's but no MP ammo pouches. i guess they blew their Budget on the Ammo for this scene. oh there was a few Guys with the old outdated K98 well their was an MG42 but for some unknown reason it didn't wipe all the Yanks out and the Gunner had K98 Ammo pouches instead of a MG gunners kit My best part is the Exploding dummy at 1:58 and you can see the charge bowl that's under the body smoking and the man here at 2:47 with modern limey shirt and a modern belt holding his trousers up. their was no issue of trouser with belt hoops, just buttons and braces.
The german army surrendered in June 1944 - only two weeks after D-day. The Germans lost 2 Million soldiers in this time, while the Americans had only casualities of 500 men.
What in the hell are you talking about lol, First off May 1945 was the surrender. Second im going to assume you mean Operation Overlord (The Invasion of Normandy) seems more reasonable. By the way casualties were about the same around 200-300k.
I nnever seen a BAR in vietnam or a 30 cal wateer cooled Mg. The MG42 was replaced by the PIG M-60. 30 cal COAX was mounted next to the big 90mm. M-48 tanks diesel 650 H.P. and 48 ton.4th div 1969.
Little German Lecture. " PATROL KAPUT " is something a classical GI from the WORLD WAR II days might have said but it is just an imitation of German PATROUILLE ( for us in German borrowed from the French. same spelling in the Duden )VERSAGT, ZERSCHOSSEN, VERNICHTET ABGEBROCHEN etc Also das würde ich eher als Deutsch bezeichnen.
The Americans are throwing grenades and creating lots of damage, but a whole battalion of Germans hasn't thrown a single stick grenade back? Not a single shot fired from the German buzz saw?
It amazes me the number of people who take this seriously. It's a caper film, bordering on being a comedy and was never made to document real events in WW2. As for the man on the MG42, he was shot in the initial blast of gunfire and never got the chance to fire.

😁
First movie for Rickles was "Run Silent, Run Deep", with Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. IIRC, Rickles was an able seaman on the sub with one line.
@@markthomas6436 👍
Rickles barely spoke as the character Billy Sugar in Scorcese's "Casino", but was great in that role.
Its funny how those film made me thought that german soldiers are actually a bunch of nubs and always defeat in battle for like 1/3 of my life until i learned the actual history.

Indeed.
When u had low budget and m1 garand or kar98k is expensive so u make em use automatic guns instead
I don't think this was a low budget movie though. I just think the automatic weapons are more dramatic so they went for them.
2:28 he's using a polish version of BAR, RKM wz.1928 Browning
The movie was made in Yugoslavia. There is a lot of Eastern Bloc weaponry in it (the American sniper uses a Russian rifle, the "Tiger" tank is plywood and tin plating on a T-34 and so on...).
@@HO-bndk The leather magazine pouch that Kelly wears is Czech, I think
I want that Thompson that Telly has ... drool 🤩
Always loved this film, but one aspect always bothered me. The deaths of MIchell and Job really affect everyone. But when Oddball loses two tanks, a total of ten men, no one blinks an eye.
👍
They didn't know the tank crews personally.
The tanks were put out of commission that doesn't necessarily mean all of the crews were killed.
the slaughter keeps going on
And long may it continue in this form. All wars should be fought on the silver screen with no one really being hurt lol.
i remember watching this on tv...
It's on in the UK often.
You seen very soon, that there are american peoples are Artist. German peoples looks different. There are beautiful and strong! 😊😉
No iron sights were used that day
Recorded in the former Yugoslavia.
Indeed. And I believe many of the "German" soldiers were actually Yugoslav Army soldiers.

2:31 Both firing at same target but one fires at the ground while the other fires into the air.
Also the machine gunner in the truck is an Oberfeldwebel. He would not be manning a gun!
And I don't think Kelly's collar-length hair is quite regulation is it?
I don't think anyone, who had been in continuous combat, had regulation anything.

1:31 of course, don't forget to smile when you're shooting at the enemy in a war.
1:16 Big Joe: hold it, FIRE 1:21
This is so realistic. I always admired the smart allied troops.
Makes you wonder, Germans never even seem to aim their weapons straight. Just fire and miss.
If a mine exploded, it was probably a misfire or a deer, then you send 2 men to look. But not half a division. 🙄
well i would not say a few americans destroying an entire germane troop with full auto weapons only and the germans not hiting a shot and for some reason not having grenades is realistic

great movie.
It's one of the best for sure!
Just a question: was it realistic in combat to "sweep" with machineguns, in stead of aming and shooting...?
If you have an obvious target you aim at it. But you can use a machine gun to lay down a covering fire to pin down the enemy.
It was called "brooming".
nope.
in the Wehrmacht it got hammered into the soldiers to conserve ammunition and fire only short 2-4 round bursts if neccesary, otherwise use single fire.
this is relevant for the SMG´s but also heavy MG´s like MG34 and MG42.
and i bet on it, that the US Army did the same with their soldiers.
Uncontrolled spray and pray is a hollywood myth.
Machine guns were - by design - inaccurate. As one veteran explained it to me, "What's the point of killing the same guy three times? Much better to spread the bad news around."
Having said that, short bursts were the order of the day.
Germans had the most disciplined army during ww2 and the best trained.
What's that "interesting fact" got to do with this clip?
Until they died or were captured. Then they sent out kids and old folks.
Luckily the other Germans at the camp failed to hear the gun fire, so didn't engage. They also didn't notice they had quite a few men missing, therefore no need to report the presence of the enemy in the vicinity.
😄😄😄

It is amazing that nearly every German soldier was either a Gefreiter or a Unteroffiziere as every one had MP40's but no MP ammo pouches. i guess they blew their Budget on the Ammo for this scene.
oh there was a few Guys with the old outdated K98
well their was an MG42 but for some unknown reason it didn't wipe all the Yanks out and the Gunner had K98 Ammo pouches instead of a MG gunners kit

Little German Lecture. " PATROL KAPUT " is something a classical GI from the WORLD WAR II days might have said but it is just an imitation of German
PATROUILLE ( for us in German borrowed from the French. same spelling in the Duden )VERSAGT, ZERSCHOSSEN, VERNICHTET ABGEBROCHEN etc Also das würde ich eher als Deutsch bezeichnen.
'Todeslost' würde ich sagen ^^
BAR was notorious for jamming, thus it was very unpopular
The Americans are throwing grenades and creating lots of damage, but a whole battalion of Germans hasn't thrown a single stick grenade back? Not a single shot fired from the German buzz saw?
It amazes me the number of people who take this seriously. It's a caper film, bordering on being a comedy and was never made to document real events in WW2. As for the man on the MG42, he was shot in the initial blast of gunfire and never got the chance to fire.
Funny thing this one US soldier shoots with BAR but problem he is not shooting with BAR he uses rkm wz. 28
