The thing I loved about Jeremy’s Sherlock, was that even though he appeared to be dark and cold, he had empathy toward people who were wronged. There he showed glimmers of humanity and warmth and kindness.
Jeremy's mother was Edith Cadbury Butler, from the famous Cadbury chocolate makers family. His father was Lieutenant Colonel Henry William Huggins, an army officer. He had three older brothers, and the English actor Martin Clunes is Jeremy's nephew.
JB will always be with us. He took one of the hardest roles ever written and made it totally his own. No actor could wish for a better epitaph. RIP legend.
Thank you for that! I really feel very lucky & privileged to have seen Jeremy Brett on stage as Sherlock Holmes. He was electrifying! He very kindly signed my poster & programme which I treasure. I believe a few photos were taken, but sadly they didn't come out as the stage door was in a gloomy courtyard! Often one is disappointed when meeting actors in person, but certainly not Jeremy Brett who was really sweet & very modest. I'm sure he would be touched by your dedication like me!
I really envy you! Jeremy Brett will always remain my favourite Holmes. To be honest, I did not know that he had also played Holmes on stage. Would you happen to know if there are any recordings of these theater performances?
Thanks for posting this! There is no doubt in my mind at all that Jeremy Brett is the definitive Sherlock Holmes. I was lucky enough to meet him in person outside the Wyndham's theatre. He was extremely patient, kind & friendly with a charming hint of eccentricity. He is very sadly missed, but the wonderful Granada series is a permanent reminder of what a gifted actor her was. There is no one to touch him as Sherlock Holmes!
This interview has brought me to tears... he wasn't only an excelent actor and the best Sherlock Holmes ever, but a really lovely and sincere person. Everything was perfect about him... requiescat in pace my beloved Jeremy.
Delectable. I was about 12 when I first watched Brett...now, nearly 40 I've suddenly discovered him again via ITV3 and seem to fins myself having an incredible crush on this lovely man! SO lovely to hear him speak. Just sad he is no longer with us. ~_~
A dignify interview. He deserved much more help and care when he went down. He totally captivated me since the first talk in the "Scandal in Bohemia". I felt like a strike in my soul.
Yesterday really was a sad day, the anniversary of the loss of a very great man. Good humoured, modest and the rarest of things in this day and age- a true gentleman, as is illustrated in this wonderful interview. Heaven gained a very bright star on the 12th September 1995, it's just such as shame that we had to lose one.
Jeremy Brett is so synonomous with Sherlock Holmes that it really surprises me to learn how much of Holmes is a character he developed so meticulously. You really can hear the difference of the lightness in Brett's voice and the serious and darker quality of Holmes' voice. Truly, one of the great actors.
I wish it were possible to buy the TV version of 'Rebecca' in which Jeremy Brett played Maxim de Winter. He was wonderful, as in everything else. And yes of course he is the absutely perfect Homes - I saw him on stage in the role as well as on television. Such a great actor.
Jeremy Brett is so fascinating! i could watch and listen to him all day long, i so would have loved just the opportunity to shake his hand. I miss him!!!
I always thought that no one would eclipse Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes. That was until I saw Jeremy play the famous sleuth. I enjoyed him so much, I bought every episode. Whenever I need to escape for an hour, I watch an episode of the wonderful series.
The best portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, period. The Granada series of Sherlock Holmes & Peter Falk's Columbo remain my favourites - The good news - they're both now available on Blu-ray.
I just discovered Jeremy and Holmes around the new year. Watched every night before bed. Now I'm having to rewatch episodes. I watch other Jeremy Brett TV but none are like Granada series.
Hi there is a book called Granada's greatest detective by Keith Frankel,it covers the series and interviews of the stars, sadly no photos, if you enjoy the series it's a nice companion, Paul in the UK
"A triumph" - I just love the story with his father and the boots. I had no idea. I can only wish every father would come around like this when their son or daughter follows their dreams and doesn't automatically follow their parents advice.
Well let me tell you, as one who turned away from the arts (especially acting) and declared to my parents that I was instead going to join the navy and train to be an officer, I can assure you that my parents, as disbelieving as they were at first, came round in just the same way. Only I was going in the opposite direction to Jeremy Brett. I’m still in now, 18 years later. With parents, it’s the concern, do you see? For instance, I have two daughters of my own now and I wish them to succeed above all else, so I suppose that if I had no concept of the field of endeavour that they had chosen, I wouldn’t know whether to be happy or sad that they’d chosen it, until I knew that they could do it and do it well. Doesn’t matter whether it’s being a librarian or a lumberjack really. As long as they succeed and are happy doing so, that’s what parents want. And I suppose that’s why Jeremy Brett’s parents and my own acted as they did. Ultimately, they understood that it was what we wanted, above all else.
Watching Jeremy during this sad sad Chrismass season (I have to spend without my late best pal) has been my only joy. I plan to bring the entire Granada series and watch the eps on Christmass Eve and Day... in my pal's "Empty House."
I agree! I am a Brettish fan from the States. His Holmes continues to captivate me. Thanks for YT, for there are many other Jeremy Brett memories that I continually am introduced to. He had a very nice voice. RIP
The interviewer is right--the years had been good to him at this point (about 1985? His wife Joan Wilson had died by then, he mentions in the second half). It is shocking to see how badly he declines physically just a few years after this interview, and still while only in his late fifties. HE looks great here, and so charming and gracious.
Even though I always thought before that Basil Rathbone was the definitive Sherlock, when I saw Brett in the series, I fell in love! Then I saw My Fair Lady and War and Peace again, and there he was when young!!! I was so excited. I wish he could have stayed around and did every one of the Sherlock Holmes stories. RIP, dear Jeremy.
Oh, I agree with you actually. I think they didn't really know how to dose properly for bi-polar in those days, and the smoking took a huge toll for sure. Also, he had neart damage from rheumatic fever when he was a teen--it actually is a wonder he survived as long as he did!
Oh my goodness, that was so wonderful when he transformed into Holmes~ He was such a great actor! To be able to go from his gregarious self to that [wonderful] isolated creature Holmes is in itself marvelous! :D That's not even beginning to mention the other things he's done, and the spirit he did them with~
If any of you have played the recent Sherlock Holmes adventure games series you can tell the creators have definately channeled Brett and Hardwicke as their Holmes and Watson respectively. To be honest I had only watched this series AFTER playing the games (although read the books years ago) and I can see why the developers chose Brett as their Holmes. He is absolutely brilliant and is everything I have ever imagined Holmes to be. If you haven't tried the games I recommend.
Those cracks that reveal the humanity were beautifully exploited by Brett, his closeups of facial expression - flashes. I'm grateful for this all to be brief bit, but thank you.
Jeremy Brett will always be Sherlock Holmes for me. Watching him effortlessly portray him is a joy. I was born in '90 and discovered these in my early teens as a Holmes obsessed, old-before-his-time chap and was captivated. It can be done by others such as Cumberbatch (who really surprised me by being excellent) but Jeremy Brett simply cannot be bettered. It's an example of a perfect performance until he was unfortunately unwell and went a bit OTT.
Seems more like Holmes playing Brett! He was tall! I thought maybe it was just camera tricks. Makes his leap over the couch even more impressive! That whole series was perfection, from Mycroft, the two Watsons and on to Mrs. Hudson. I can't forget the portrait of Chinese Gordon by the door! Fabulous!
What does he say about his dad right after "He was a magnificent man"? Wow, near the end of this clip, it's almost a shock when you see him beginning to slip into Holmes, describing him. An incredible thing.
He was incredible in that role, a rival to even Rathbone, I think! When I think of Holmes, i think of Mr, Brett. An outstanding actor who brought to life so many of Holme's adventures that I read a schoolboy. Thanks for posting this.
What a wonderful interview! The man born to play Holmes, talking to the man born to interview. Can't wait for part deux!! Thanks so much for posting, subscribing now :-)
@lizmil It is sad that two of the greatest Holmes suffered badly after loosing their wives; Cushing and Brett. It is so sad that these great actors, and according to almost everyone nice people, had to go through so much.
I wish he'd done all the Doyle stories & I wish he could have had a happier ending in his personal life. He & Clive Merrison are my definitive Sherlocks.
Right up there with Olivier in my opinion -- so great that he transcends the role, really. Just like Olivier. Long live him because he was also an absolutely endearing human being. Thanks so much for sharing this one.
Jeremy Brett is forever the one and only Holmes for me. I followed the Holmes series from the beginning and some of the episodes are even better than the original stories. (I've read all of them)
Around 6:53 he goes slightly into character. It's as if he became Sherlock Holmes for a moment so he could verbally express exactly what Sherlock Holmes is.
I find Jeremy Brett a very calming presence. He seems tranquil, and of course his voice is always a pleasure to listen to.
Totally agreeee 🌈💗 my dear friend 💜💙
A very handsome voice.
The thing I loved about Jeremy’s Sherlock, was that even though he appeared to be dark and cold, he had empathy toward people who were wronged. There he showed glimmers of humanity and warmth and kindness.
👌👌👌
That was how Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote Sherlock Holmes originally.
Jeremy's mother was Edith Cadbury Butler, from the famous Cadbury chocolate makers family. His father was Lieutenant Colonel Henry William Huggins, an army officer. He had three older brothers, and the English actor Martin Clunes is Jeremy's nephew.
My father's family was/is named Butler, my son, Jeremy, carries on the name.
JB will always be with us.
He took one of the hardest roles ever written and made it totally his own. No actor could wish for a better epitaph.
RIP legend.
Jeremy is so magnificent a man and actor. I am so sad I discovered him only after he passed. He is sorely missed. Rip, love

Lucky you👍

My god... just look at him at 6:55 You can see him change in front of you and he IS Holmes. Unbelievable, what a great actor... such a loss.
This interview has brought me to tears... he wasn't only an excelent actor and the best Sherlock Holmes ever, but a really lovely and sincere person. Everything was perfect about him... requiescat in pace my beloved Jeremy.
Jeremy was the best actor out of england.we Amercians love him so much.
و ما ایرانیها❤❤
He was fantastic actor... .. God bless the GREAT Jeremy Brett ... The Greatest Sherlock Holmes of all times...
Keşke filmlerinde uyuşturucu enjektörünün gösterilmesi ve yoğun sigara içilmesi reklamlarına kalmasaydı.. O reklamlar toplumu çok kötü etkiledi

He played AC Doyle's Holmes very accurately.
I could listen to Jeremy talk for hours.
A wonderful clear voice and brilliant actor.
And good old Terry wogan an intelligent interviewer.
Utterly unique;brilliant.I am always going to miss the great Jeremy Brett.Inspirational guy in his professional and personal life.

In just a split second he became Holmes. God! What a great actor!

His is the gold standard Holmes.
He has such a beautiful voice and way of speaking
what an amazing man, R.I.P Jeremy
Iam watching Jeremy Brett / Sherlock Holmes for the 6th time . He is the best. I love him.
the way he turns from holmes to watson in a blink of an eye is quite scary it's so good - a fabulous actor no doubt - RIP :(
Huge success in Sweden for a decade or so. One of the highlights of the week back then. Tremendous actor!
The interviewer is right--the years had been good to him at this point (about 1985? His wife Joan Wilson had died by then, he mentions in the second half). JB was amazing...his style, voice, intelligence, talent...unmatched!
🆗️
Like usual, I'm late for the party, only recently have I had the privilege of seeing his Holmes character, and it's unique and brilliant.
An All Time Great Actor.
Up There with the Greats.

this guy is sooooo talented, I can't get tiried of watching the Sherlock Holmes over n over just to see his acts: RIP:))
Wow! What a fantastic interview, love the humanity of the man.👏💕,Actor/ human. 👏
Oh my goodness, that was so wonderful when he transformed into Holmes~
He was such a great actor! To be able to go from his gregarious self to that [wonderful] isolated creature Holmes is in itself marvelous! :D

Brilliant actor and the best Sherlock by far...
Watching the JB Sherlock for the nth time and still finding increasing depth in his performance. The tight, quick smile gets me every time.
The best Sherlock Holmes ever..my mum actually met him, I was huge fan and totally envious
خوش به حالش😢

Utterly brillient, the BEST ever Sherlock Holmes
Jeremy Brett will always be Sherlock Holmes for me. Watching him effortlessly portray him is a joy. I was born in '90 and discovered these in my early teens as a Holmes obsessed, old-before-his-time chap and was captivated.

What a star ❤️
Brett was a lovely man he was excellent as Holmes absolutely brilliant
My all-time favorite rendition of Sherlock Holmes is Mr Jeremy Brett.
7:09 That was my favorite part. "Well done! Well done, Holmes!" That made me laugh so hard, especially coming from Jeremy Brett. LOL!
I could listen to this man all day. His voice is so smooth and comforting. I miss him dreadfully.
Fabulous!
Brett is an inspiration.

I was six years old when the series was on TV... And my mom and dad watched it! Happy Easter from Italy :)
Brilliant actor, sadly missed,R.I.P
Que hombre tan dulce...🌹
There truly is no other Sherlock Holmes than Jeremy in MHO.
I keep watching this over and over again, Jeremy is so wonderful. The best Sherlock indeed! thank you jbrettsgirl for posting this interview!
His portrayal of Holmes will never be beat.
oh, exactly the same story for me! One of my first crushes, still will always be THE Holmes for me.
To me Jeremy Brett is Holmes, love him.
LOL I love Jeremy's stiff upper lip voice XD Wonderful man and the Quintessential Holmes.
Watched every Sherlock so great performance. Watson was such a great sidekick to Sherlock
Loved him as Holmes. The best Holmes for me.
Jeremy Brett, the man who mastered the roles of both Holmes & Watson.
Tremendous, must watch part 2 !
Loved "...you learned to grit your teeth and think of England." Thanks for the interview. Cheers.
Brettt...çok başarılıydı..Audio Jermy..Sherloc Holmes
What a wonderful interview! The man born to play Holmes, talking to the man born to interview. Can't wait for part deux!! Thanks so much for posting, subscribing now :-)
The actor is so different than Holmes! Amazing!
Very happy this was posted. Thank You.
@lizmil It is sad that two of the greatest Holmes suffered badly after loosing their wives; Cushing and Brett. It is so sad that these great actors, and according to almost everyone nice people, had to go through so much.
The body of a god and the voice of a full orchestra. Yup.
👌👌👌
❤
The Best Holme's ever and he seem's like a nice guy too!
Brett was excellent as Holmes absolutely excellent
This man is my idol. I act like him, I have the same intensity as him in everything I do.
The moment he "wears" Holmes, it looks so immediately different!
I agree, Jeremy Brett was/is Sherlock Holmes & always will be Sherlock Holmes 🌹💖
The best Sherlock Holmes ever ! So handsome! RIP 🙏
Never ever be another Sherlock Holmes like Jeremy Brett's. 🌟
A jewel of a man!
He was by far the best Holmes ever.
Nothing more than watching Sherlock Holmes acting by Jeremy Brett made me feel good when I was in dark side of my life.
و من هم همینطور دیدن برت در نقش هولمز معجزه بزرگ زندگی من بود😢
Jeremy Brett a great man
Jeremy Brett is forever the one and only Holmes for me. I followed the Holmes series from the beginning and some of the episodes are even better than the original stories. (I've read all of them)
Jeremy Brett ✨👏🤍Stunning Wonderfull Talented Precoiusidad Lindo Hot Charisma 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Around 6:53 he goes slightly into character. It's as if he became Sherlock Holmes for a moment so he could verbally express exactly what Sherlock Holmes is.
I have such a crush on him ❤️
this guy is holmes, rip jeremy , 4 ever watching holmes xx
I know he said not to laugh, but I loled when he said he wanted to be a cowboy.
