  • In this little short I'll summarize how Sauron actually lost the One Ring in The Lord of the Rings - unlike how it's depicted in Peter Jackson's adaptation of the trilogy!

I still get upset when I realize that Tolkien said Sauron's ëala could carry the One Ring from the bottom of the ocean to Barad-dür, but his fana just lay dormant on the ground while Isildur cut the Ring off his finger.🙄 A plot hole perhaps?

I’m fairly certain that’s not what happened, but that it’s simply a mistake, the wording indicates that at least. He used it on Númenor, yet later he somehow *picks it up again* in Barad-dûr. One of the more annoying inconsistencies

Look. Tolkien himself stated that Sauron brought the One Ring with him to Numenor. Sauron's fair Fana was destroyed in the sinking of Numenor, but somehow his ëala was able to grab the Ring, sprout stinkin' wings and fly back to Barad-dür, where he was somehow able to reembody in a couple hundred years or so.
Okay, Professor, if that is possible then why couldn't Sauron's ëala lift the One Ring from his lifeless fana before Isildur even approached him? The Ring flees from the dead hand in one case, but not the other. It is one of my pet peeves of the Legendarium.🧐 I drove Steven of The Red Book crazy with my complaining about this issue. My solution is so easy, Professor, Sauron left the Ring in Barad-dür. That is it. That solves the whole ghost-flight-with-Ring-cargo issue. Sauron did not need the Ring to accomplish everything he accomplished in Numenor. However, Steven said that Sauron couldn't leave the Ring behind because it had a hold on him, which I guess has to be true. Personally, Sauron having ultimate power over the Ring makes more sense to me than vice versa. Poltergeists of Arda doesn't...

@@EnerdhilWell this is not that simple trust me. First, Tolkien said earlier that each bodily death for an Ainu weakened them. So the fact that Sauron could carry his Ring to Mordor but not again would be maybe because of this reason. Not only Sauron but multiple Ainur has shown that they can interact with the material world as spirits. Examples would be Arien who guides the Sun without a body or Valar who were bodiless while shaping Ea/Arda
As for plot holes, there are many others besides this moment if we were to analyze all the shown powers of the Ainur and how that relates to the plot. But it seems most of the time Tolkien just didn’t notice this or if he did, he didn’t care. Although that is just my speculation

Once various Maiar chose to enter Arda, they were bound to the Fana in which they entered. So all the explanations you gave for ëala forms interacting with the physical world do not explain Sauron's particular gift.

As for the weakening power hypothesis, I know it is true, but you have to be able to affect Arda in spirit form from the beginning. Sauron never tried to change into his spiritual form when Huan had him by the neck. Instead, he shape-shifted. Why? Because he had to have a fana to exist in Arda. So when he lost his Fana in the sinking of Numenor, he had literally no physical connection to Arda. So how could he touch, lift, carry, and fly the Ring thousands of miles back to Barad-dür? He couldn't He left the Ring in Barad-dür, Professor. Just sayin'....
