Silvereye - tauhou

Silvereye (Zosterops lateralis) also known as waxeye or white-eye . The Maori name tauhou means stranger or new arrival referring to their unexpected arrival in the 1830,s when they apparently arrived on a favourable wind from Australia . Now one of New Zealands most abundant birds .

During the winter, we often put out bird feeders on our oak tree and it often attracts Silvereyes. Sometimes there can be as many as twenty birds at the bird feeder at one time!

I found one in my garage but it has a bald head, he seems pretty tame and let’s me hold him for a couple seconds before flying away, what should I do?

I think I would set it free , I found one in my house last week and I was able to pick it up but it quickly flew off when I released it .

Yes they have quite a repertoire of sounds , I have heard them making that downward one quite often .. quite a soothing sound .
