I was watching loads of playthrough, let´s play and gameplay videos, and still unsure if it would meet the potential I set from what I saw. It happens that this review clarifies exactly my deepest concerns. Hoped that the battle engagement would grow in its complexity and therefore difficulty. Hoped also that helping a specific village to grow would be a crucial part of the strategy and essential to their survival (who knows they could get too greedy and powerful at the mid-end game and the humans with the other races unite forces to battle them). Despite all these "must-haves" for me, I'll still play it and support it. I hope and wish Pine could get another shot with even more races and these implementations I've mentioned.
I use to think it was a reference to Fable and Hew the Giant as this game is partially based on that game. Edit: I asked the devs before about it just a few months ago. They said that they didn't even realized the similarity in the name. I just thought it was interesting.
This game was so heartbreaking for me. It’s so gorgeous and the simulation ideas are incredible but the core gameplay loop falls so flat that I have no inclination to keep playing
I just picked it up for super cheap. It was fun for a while, but the endgame has you collect a bunch of resources and I got super disheartened when I realized how frustrating the mechanics are when mixed.

These videos explain exactly what the game is, with the gameplay in 3 minutes. It's more of a time saving concept I guess.

Pine. It had a very strong opening section, then a few hours later it reveals its true nature. Bland and flat gameplay in an unfinished world. Good ideas, bad execution. But hey at least the music is good.
"Incredible idea falling short of its potential" appears to be the common theme among most of these indie games. Maybe it's the lack of experience or lack of resources.
Mostly resources. The indie scene is full of amazing and creative ideas, but lack budget to realize them. On the other hand indie game publishers need to find the gems between piles of rubbish. So it's either getting great quality boring triple A games, or relatively poor quality amazing indie games and it will probably stay that way.
Have any of the listed criticisms been corrected as of Dec. 2021 (other than the issues that were helped with the pre-release patch)? I’m really interested in this game…
Would be fun if you could realistically sell blueprints aka 'ideas' to different tribes and see them use the same weapon they paid for use it against each other lol

Penny Lane Ideas are one thing. Execution is another. I am sure it will be improved over time but I preferred the days when games were truly complete with few issues when they actually released. We don't get that much these days sadly.
Got it for like 1.99 definitely can say its worth it. Few bugs here and there but to me so far it’s like if both games Biomutant and Zelda BOTW mashed up into one this is what it would be like. Gameplay is cool love the idea of it
Cool to see an open world game that seems to take more inspiration from Breath of the Wild than Ubisoft. Not that Breath if the Wild wasn't heavily inspired by Ubisoft open worlds, but it's a much needed fork. Still, that cluttered icon-filled map makes me quite unenthused.
@@tomstonemale That's the big one I point to, yeah. Also the climbing *is* very Assassin's Creed to me. Or Shadow of Mordor, but that's very much unabashedly in the Ubisoft open world vein. And the crafting is very Far Cry. So... I'd agree, Sky Snow... it *doesn't* feel close to *GTA.* I just disagree that it's closer to GTA. I can't really think of how, personally. I also agree it feels more Skyrim than GTA.
I was starting to enjoy the game once I entered into the Exploration Area after the intro. What ultimately turned me off from this game is the combat though, it is absolutely sluggish and heavy. Aside from combat, there are some other issues. The first puzzle area in the Pollen Cave I was able to glitch through the rock/pully obstacle. I also found that sometimes when you jump off of a water fall, the game doesn't register that you've landed in water, so when you reach land, you die instantly. I like the barter system, it's cool, but I hate that you lose reputation with other tribes when you donate to them. Even tribes that have an alliance with each other. Why would I lose reputation with one tribe for donating to one of their allies? Anyway. Great concept, but I just can't keep playing the game.

The one thing that truly bothers me about this game is the infuriating camera! You know how most games if you look to one direction while walking/running and then return the stick to center position, the camera will linger there for a bit before centering itself. It's hard to explain I guess, but this camera mechanic is extremely helpful for open world adventure type games. It allows you to look in different directions while walking, with ease. Ya, this game throws that out the window. The instant you let up on the right stick, the camera will return to center position. I hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it!!! And aside from that, the controls in general feel wonky. I'm not even going to attempt to explain because I can't articulate it right. But, something feels weird with the controls. I'm always pressing the wrong button, even ten hours in at this point. I know the controls, but my muscle memory from most other games collides with this funked up control scheme.
Seing the footage is only on the tutorial island, i wonder how far you actualy got into the game to give it a proper review?? . For know i have the same feeling about everything but im going to push the game a bit further to see what the dev has in store for us.

Very cool concept. But it is lacking something. I really think they should have capitalized on this concept with some multiplayer. There is so much potential there just by hearing the idea of the game. I really think if it had some Rust-like multiplayer or even co-op it would push the game to the next level. The general concept of the game would allow them to put a little of everything all great and successful games have. Want wave defense similar to left 4 dead with multiplayer? They could do that, and it would very easily fit into the narrative. Want survival based gameplay like Rust that varies from being a lone nomad, all the way to making tribes with friends and fighting/cooperating with other tribes? They could do that and it would very easily fit into the narrative. Large scale PvP? They could also do that in many different ways. From open world PvP all the way to Server vs Server or "Tribe vs. Tribe" PvP. They could do that and it would very easily fit into the narrative. But as of now, all it is is just single player exploration. Which isn't necessarily bad, but will result in just being another forgotten game. Like I said, the idea allows for so much, particularly if it actually did have multiplayer. But as a single player game, I feel it's kind of a waste.
I'd be all about a game that takes the framework from Outward and adds more depth and polish, but this doesn't seem quite like what I first thought it would be. I guess I'm really hoping that some day we'll get a game with Souls-like combat layered on top of a survival sim with quality social dynamics between different factions. I'm hoping Dying Light 2 at least nails the survival and social stuff, but I hated the combat in DL1 and don't expect that it will change all that much for the sequel.

It's Outward+ breath of the wild, it is kind of a lower budget/smaller map.Played about 10 hours, made some videos and it's fun even just to watch the factions try to make better villages and grow:) the story is good, the setting is good and it's an open world game. You do have to follow the main quest but it's an unique experience, so much potential with it's survival and crafting elements. Sadly not a lot of rpg character development like stats, perks, diverse armor or a character progression system with exp system.
IF labor costs are the biggest factor for making a game then this game should sooner be costing around 5 dollar instead of 20. ONLY 7 people instead of the usual 700 worked on this game. It doesn't seem to be able to compete with games like Witcher or Red dead redemption obviously. But it does match up with fallout 4 and vs fallout76 it's no contest. You could also just wait for the game to be on sale for 5 dollar.

Well that isnt the case :) You can choose exactly what tribe you want to progress towards to. But keep in mind gaining reputation with one tribe can lower the reputation with the other one.
So, more enemies, more side quests, no forced allegiance missions in the campaign and better combat woukd have made this a hit? Shame. I had this on my list since I saw a trailer a while back.

You don't need to completely shelve a game style and hinder it completely, you just need more of other game styles to give a better variety. People always feel like they need to deal in extremes and they don't.
I don't see why. Open worlds have been a huge thing in video games for a couple decades. It's the detail of the open world that makes it worth it or not.

BOTW really wasn't inspired by Ubisoft. I'd go so far as to say it feels closer to GTA than to assassin's Creed. And it doesn't feel close to GTA
BoTW was more close to Skyrim than GTA. Heck, Aonuma even name dropped Skyrim as a source of inspiration during development.
