Sophia Kim, everyone has their own style... we’re all unique in that way... don’t be discouraged if you think someone is better at art than you, take notes on what you like about their work, add that into your own, and study where other artists fall a little short of their personal normal so you don’t make the same mistakes.... but above all.... PRACTICE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE even if you’re never going to finish a piece because you don’t like the way it’s turning out take every single thing you make (regardless of medium or how close to done it got) as an opportunity to learn and improve yourself and your work

As an artist who graduated from art school and took classes I highly agree with the regrets. But i will add this too always keep connections with your professors ( who like your work). I will admit this too in art school you will have peers who are in their own little bubble and want to do their own thing, You will find good people to talk with though. I will also admit this, There are some professors who lack patience with students who struggle. I will personally say my art books from college helped me alot more when i needed a refresher then going back to individual classes. So if you fello artists still have your anatomy books or what not keep em ! It saves you more time and money.
Also if you ever apply for classes online make sure they are specifically in the category you want some classes are falsely advirtised

I personally think I'm just gonna go with Udemy in regards to learning art. It'll be cheaper and I can use my actual college courses to learn other skills too.
Also, the "Don't compare yourself" one is honestly a great point even beyond just learning. I've been personally having that problem a lot and looking down on my own work for not being as good as people with years more experience than me. It's something I've been working on getting over and feel I am making a bit of progress towards. Also, thank you again.
Post- Post- Script: I also find it personally pretty neat how you're doing a bit more aberrant designs with some of your characters. It reminds me a lot of your comic and overall fits in super well with your style!

I remember starting college feeling really excited to be doing what I wanted. Then living the reality of college and barely having time to get projects done and missing out on joining clubs.
My classmates were a mix of socially awkward and never wanting to talk, or viewed themselves so highly they didn’t want to waste time making friends. Art school was a trip, but I always felt that way in social settings too of not deserving to talk to people. Had to push myself to make friends, but it flew and then you’re out in the real world and it’s not the same.

omg idk but this video reminded me of a story !!!
my art teacher told us once that when she was in college, some of her teachers were also still working on their field, and some of them were successful and all that jazz. So, she had this one sculpture teacher that wouldn't teach anyone properly, because he was too scared of his students "stealing" his job. She told us that once, she was working on this sculpture, and one gallery person went to visit the school, and they asked if her if she wanted to sell it, and she agreed because she needed money to buy more art supplies. Her teacher immediately offered to help her finish the sculpture, and he purposely broke it, so she wouldn't sell it.

I am surprised you didn't see the importance of learning about how color works or about various painting techniques by using hands-on materials like paint. I have a degree in graphic design that I used for about a decade in the field and then began my career as a secondary art educator. I found that learning the fundamentals like how to draw, how to set type, and how to burn and dodge while developing black and white photographs, gave me quite a big advantage over those who strictly used digital media.

My school did this dumb thing where sometimes they wouldnt even publish lists of art supplies until the day before class or the morning of class. So many of us fell behind because of their disorganization and its top school in Australia too for art. And I've definitely experienced a more free world outside of art school but at the same time I did learn some things so thats good :)

There’s this art school i found and i’m sold honestly, they dont care how rough you are in the beginning they dont care if you’re bad at art, they care about your portfolio that can get you a job, they care about improvement and the ending. And i’m just overwhelmed by that, i dont need a portfolio to get in, just will power to start off.

Y'know, if you're a student in Highschool, listen to this advice. *TEACHERS ARE NOT YOUR ENEMIES.* I am friends with almost all of my teachers, and it's amazing. They help me so much, and I've gotten so many benefits from being associated with them. If they get to know you as a person, they will feel more inclined to help you out and/or refer you to a college. Also, they are absolutely wonderful people (most of the time) and they don't mind a little conversation with students.
Here's some advice on how to make friends with teachers!
    1. Be nice to them.
    2. Tell them "Good morning!", "How are you?", "Have a great day!", "Have a great weekend!"
    3. Try your best on assignments.
    4. Make conversation with them.
    5. Offer to help them out with anything they may need.
    6. Act like a civilized human being, and don't be absolutely stupid during class.
    7. Tell them your aspirations and dreams, and if they're a teacher who teaches a subject that interests you, tell them!
Hope this helps! And remember, teachers are people too! Have a good day/night! 😊

Ah, thanks for the advice. I *attempted* to make a graphic novel based off of one of my Legend of Zelda/Metroid fanfic during Art Therapy sessions (which ended up lost somewhere in the hospital as the therapist had found another job and left the project behind to be lost) in which after almost a month(?) of sessions I barely got some progress finished on the first page. It didn't help that I chose Twilight Princess' Hyrule as the backdrop.

My school store is cheaper or the same as blick for a lot to stuff, but overpriced for some others here and there. I also recommend waiting till class actually starts to buy your supplies-often teachers at SCAD will list a very specific brand but then you find out you could have gotten a cheaper material that works better. They have class packs with all your materials for a certain class, but after first quarter you usually already have stuff like graphite and charcoal that you’d just be spending money for things you don’t need.

If you have a teacher that never likes your work no matter what then that’s the class you should experiment in the most. They’re not going to like you work anyway

Luckily in my university the shop actually has cheaper stuff than anywhere else, but I would recomend everyone to have a look around the city one day and see the art stores and some of the prices they have, sometimes if they sell you things in packs it ends up being cheaper or if they have a sales day.

Maybe to either practice drawing more non-human characters or just for fun because sometimes humans can get pretty boring? At least that's something that happens to me a lot :o

I literally just got accepted into art school today, and I’m so nervous. I was always the “art kid”, in high school, I really never felt competitive with my peers. If anything I really liked watching other people grow and improve, but now, thinking about college, I’m a little nerve-racked. But then, I watched this video, and I feel a little bit more prepared.
I’m glad that I got to see this video!

I used to have really good blockmates who are scholars, had the same interests as I do (anime and games), and Godly art skills. People in my class usually like kpop and movies more than anime and games and that just made me feel out of place cuz I couldn't really relate. So when I found them browsing through some manga while loading up a game on their laptops I was really ecstatic. And I admit I wasn't really as good as everyone else when making art and their work was so good I immediately stalked their social media to check out more. But I wasn't really a good student due to some self problems like... gaming addictions or something? I never really talked about this since it's not like I forget to eat or anything that bad and you're kinda expected to haul your own ass (at least in my family) but I do neglect my studies and play for 16 hrs on weekends since I could just cram them before class. So I never really talked to them out of shyness and shame aside from group projects and stuff. They graduated ahead of me and it's one of the things I regret so much... if they didn't become close friends then they would've at least become my first network circle.
I also have really good professors who are active in the industry, but again I wasn't really a good student art-wise since I've regressed so much I couldn't even draw a good looking pose without reference or 3D guide material, and I didn't really do well in lecture classes because of the aforementioned gaming problem. So again I didn't approach my professors out of shyness and shame.
I'm in my 4th year now and I'm not ready to face my thesis and have been putting off opening commissions out of fear that I might not be able to meet client deadlines in the midst of college work. But if there's one thing I will make sure of is that I will graduate. My transcript might not be clean, but I will be damned if I don't get out of here without that piece of paper called diploma.

(I tried to put this in your live stream but it got lost) You mentioned that you had a hard time getting a more textured look in clipstudio so I have a way that you can do that. In the pen types there are two pens called 'for effect lines' and 'textured pen'. You can adjust these to have more texture to your liking. I live off of the texture pen and I think that it is more of what you are looking for but that is what I found that looks more like a irl ink pen. And to get the wet blending that you usually get I find that the soothing water blender is the best for that. I hope you find this useful and I hope you have a nice day!

while some of the things you said were relatable others kind of baffled me and made me wonder if they're jsut 'american college' things, more so than art school things. like here in uk the school shop almost always has supplies cheaper than in other stores, and we're not required to buy any textbooks. most 'classes' for drawing/painting provided you with supplies, the only time you had to bring in anything is if they were more of a 'free style' type of elsson and even then you were told to jsut bring in whatever you felt like using at the time. if there is some compulsory reading the tutors always send us the pdf of the actual text and a lot of their 'recommended' reading is already available in the school library. (the 1st year being jsut for learning is so tru though, in my uni 1st year doesnt count towards our final year at all, but if im being honest there is a lto of 1st year work that i am rather proud of, due to how much i was forced to step outside of the box).

I really relate to point 3. I worry a lot as well whenever I talk with someone in class that I don’t talk to as much. If they are better than me I fear that they will think that I’m trying to reap off them and especially with the talk about the importance of networking and connection, talking with new people just seems like an act with ulterior motives . (Also point 4)

Im not in an art school but between grade 10-11 and the end of high school (grade 12) we have a pretty important exam from subjects we choose and I am going to choose art for both so of course Im going to try to get artworks as good as possible but I do try to experiment too, because my art teacher constantly throws ideas and supplies in my face, which is good. :))
