Thank you Tracie. This a great message to put in our minds, we don’t always need “all the things”. Kits are wonderful and have their place, but using found bits and pieces can be equally satisfying .
Oh, thank goodness! I too like to create my journals without kits! I’m glad I’m not alone, so I can honestly say - what a treat that you’re up to showing these! God bless xoxo
I can't afford kits right now, so this is really great. I'm watching older videos for inspiration. Thanks. I have been watching the 2021 videos with all the ladies and am learning a lot.
I stopped watching junk journaling, because everyone seemed to always be using kits. I had fallen in love with the original idea of making something beautiful out of junk, so all those kits just left me cold! Thanks for bringing it back to basics.
I really enjoyed this video that didn't put any pressure to use a kit. I think when you do use a kit it implies that you should buy the kit and not every one can afford to spend money on buying loads of kits (there are so many around these days). So thank you for taking the time to do this for us non-kit folks.
Also eyeshadows are a great way of ageing the papers ..... not having all this 'stuff' really makes you think outside the box and stretch your imagination....I loved this idea of making 2 examples 1 with 'stuff' and 1 without 'stuff', great way to show beginners you don't need loads of things and its actually more fun to try and come up with alternatives
You are so right!!! We have all the things to create all around us... I think the product you make is even better if you use the junk around you instead of the kits... I see the kits that everyone uses and I just love them, but I know we can all make the same thing on our own. Thank you for the inspiration, I am really looking forward to your next no kit create video!
Great advice Tracie. It’s learning to look with new eyes at everything we have because a lot of it can be used in journals. I love these ideas and I will be using them in journals I make because I can’t afford digis or a lot of the tools that are used either but I improvised. I tried to make a slide once but couldn’t get the inside square straight so I love your little trick!! Thanks for sharing it
Get a set of old encyclopedias, and you’re set for life! These have the Tracie Fox style even without using kits. I love how fast you put together that last little piece!
I love that you showed so many examples without all the tools. It's true that so many of us could order it all from Amazon & Etsy but in these strange times money can be a bit tight, but we can still all have fun with paper, glue and scissors.
I love the idea of not using a kit! One of my favorite journals I made was from true recyclable paper, nothing from a kit and it was great fun to had the freedom to just play. Thank you for your video! This is fun!
This was a great video. I had seen videos of specimen slides before but had not taken much notice until I saw this. I have some book pages from an old nature study text book that were perfect for the frames and a Reader's Digest book of marine life drawings for the inside. I cut the holes using a die cutter and did some of them as circles and ovals - not so authentic as slides but they still looked great. Thanks for stretching my creativity and making me re-evaluate what I already have.
This is a perfect video for someone who is starting out without all the “things”. It was how I learned now I think I have too many things… lol! Sometimes basic is better because it really stretches your creativity! Great video Tracie!
Love this Tracie! ❤ The ruler trick is just brilliant! I've always had a difficult time getting folds to be straight. Thank you for sharing your ideas and methods with us. Would love to watch a series of this type! Have a lovely day!
I was thinking “use the numbers off the guest check”. Then you did. Love it! Your work is always so inspiring and right in my wheelhouse. Love crafting along with you. Great to do things without kits for a change. I got started junk journaling trying to use up things that were going into the trash. Then got into kits and found I was getting more in instead of using up the trash. Had to pull back and reevaluate . Thank you for getting me back on track.
So glad to know that using the 'x' cut for windows isn't cheating. I have one square punch but didn't want to buy more so I love this method. I also use PVA with the cow on the bottle, and dollar store shoe polish. That is fact, too much stuff blocked my creativity. Went back to basics, but not ALL the way back! lol 😉
Fun projects! I have so, so many old falling apart vintage books, that I haven’t purchased any kits yet. I’ve been trying to use and up-cycle the materials that I have. If I look at what I have, I have plenty of images with which to use in my work. Also, I do love using postage stamps! Thanks for sharing. 😃
This is fabulous!! Love how you showed 2 ways to make somethings!! I’m always looking around trying to figure out how to make something with things I have. Lol!!! These makes are so cool! Have a wonderful evening! 🌲
Great video. There are loads of things in our houses (or maybe in our parents house) that we can use for junk journaling. Junk mail and magazines for starters. Also, whenever I go to a charity shop, dollar store, office store, or hardware store, I look around for things that are flat and look interesting.
Oh I love that Pepin paper. I bought the Flora the other day. Might have been my little vid all the way from NZ you saw. 😂 gorgeous paper. Great vid Tracie. Thanks.
What a great demonstration for those who have limited resources and even for those that have all the tools. They were all quite lovely. Those paper books from Amazon are wonderful and there are so many to choose from, brilliant find! Thanks Tracie!🥰
So I inspirational Tracie👏🏼 YES please on more of these videos. I love kits but as you say we do have lots of other options too and not everyone has all the tools and printers . We all started somewhere didn’t we🙂. Never ever stop filming Tracie it makes my day having you with me crafting . I’m from Essex and you make me feel right at home . 🎉💓
I agree with you on the Tonic Trimmer I don't like mine either. I do however love your advice on using what you have, and your slides are wonderful. TFS
Lovely tutorial Tracie sometimes it’s good to get back to basics we can get caught up in buying many items and then not know how best to use them, I know for myself I can get a bit overwhelmed Thankyou for pairing it back you’ve inspired me ♥️
Glad you have done this without a kit. I love trying to make up my own ideas but the kits and pre-made things are lovely too. So many books and magazines junked though!
Thank you very much for sharing, I just started in March so I don't have a lot of things and I try to make it without all the tools or kit(I don't have home internet or a printer). And try to save money where I can. So again thank you for sharing! They look lovely!
This is a great video Tracie, mainly because this is how I craft...lol, the only punch I have is a single hole punch...lol, the rest I do by hand, I just have to get my hands on some old books I usually download prints and go to the Photocopy/Print Store to print them off from my flash drive as my printer died. Love your ideas!
Absolutely loved this, thank you. Don't have square punch but have just made several slides following your lead with hole made in middle of square and cut out with scissors. Works a treat.
Thanks for all your inspiration 🙏😀 I almost never buy card stock for backing my tags etc.. I use boxes from pizza, cookies and every thing. I keep all gift papers, specially Christmas and I reused old clothing and cheesecloth I never buy but bandages is so much cheaper. I haven’t got a score board but use my bone folder and a ruler. I don’t have a lot of money so I am forced to try to find alternative ways. I have a long wish list for making my crafting easier but it’s only you imagination that holds you back 🙂🙏 Happy crafting to everyone and please STAY SAFE 🦋💙🙏🙂 Tina - Denmark
I’ve just ordered the floral one and a William Morris as that one you had sold out. Your right in the u.k. easy to get 12x12 card stock paper not so easy maybe the odd sheet. Thanks for the advice.x
These are really cute. I've been pulling apart encyclopedias so have heaps of black and white pictures to use up. So agree with the advice to everyone to use what you have; you don't need all the bells and whistles or exact items other crafters have 😊💚💙
Thank you so much Tracie, that’s really really awesome, thank you so much for showing us all how to do things without kits. It just goes to show that you really really can do it!!!!!! Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
I loved this! Thanks for sharing this! I have been whining about numbers for a bit, but now I see infinite resources, including phone numbers, here in the states we can just cut the last six digits and you even have the dash already in it! Yes!!!
If you place your forefinger on the top half of the little clear piece on the trimmer, and your thumb on the bottom half and press down when you cut, the trimmer works much better. Love the video, thank you!
THANK YOU so much for respecting the ideas and originality of the true junk journal! I create junk journals and DO Not want to use kits. The whole idea of creating a junk journal is to create a unique one of a kind , heartfelt piece of art. Using kits negates the true meaning of an original junk journal.
Great idea. It’s trying to get people into the frame mind of swapping out things and not needing it all Those wrapping papers are just gorgeous Hugs xxxx
great video, Tracie! Thank you - I think sometimes we miss the basic stuff. Also, I think it was Nik TBS who showed those books recently on a video... :) Its a Dutch designer and publisher and I fairly drooled over Pepin's stuff after Nik mentioned it, such lovely books!!
It's 2020. Rules are out the window. I'm still experimenting with whether spilled vodka forms a permanent bond - and that's just my early morning crafting. By afternoon... well use your imagination. ;-)
I had a paper cutter that wouldn’t cut the last bit, like yours just did. The way I made it work was.... I’d push the cutting blade in towards the other edge, that my paper was resting on & needed to be cut at. All the way down to the bottom edge. That always worked for me. Just push the blade to the left as you are pushing it down. Clean cut every time.
Brilliant just shows how much you can find around the house that can be of use.. I'm struggling to find an equivalent glue in the uk. Do you have any suggestions?..
Thank you for doing this. I don't have access to digitals. Or the money for all the ones everyone uses, though I would buy them if I could. I use a sanding block to sand some of the shiny stuff off. Again, thank you.
So happy to see a video that doesn’t involve digital kits! Thank you!
Thank you Tracie. This a great message to put in our minds, we don’t always need “all the things”. Kits are wonderful and have their place, but using found bits and pieces can be equally satisfying .
So true!

Great tutorial, Tracie! I remember those days when I didn't have enough to craft with. You are so inspiring! Thank you!
Tracie, I love this project, especially how you used the numbers off of guest checks. Brilliant!
Thanks for all the great ideas for substitutes and thinking outside the box...or inside the scrap box!
Lovely to see you do the slides without the tools! TFS the inspiration, Tracie!

So agree Laurette!!!
Tracie, thank you for sharing the papers, I had to jump on over and grab one. The slides and tabs are lovely. TYFS, Donna, in California.

That was so good, it's nice to go and look at things you might not automatically use. I'm going to try these. They are beautiful.
Good point Tracie! I love kits, but it's fun to come up with stuff from what I already have. Thanks for the inspiration!
Great video that shows different things from mags, books, & papers without kits...thanks..

I immediately ordered 2 wrapping paper books from Amazon as soon as I saw yours. Thank you for the idea!

Thank you so much for sharing this. As a beginner it is quite overwhelming sometimes when seeing what others do and their tools etc. they use. 😻
Love this! Please film more tutorials like this. I have loads of great books and paper pads that I need to use.
I tried using clear gesso on shiny book page. Gives it a cool slightly rough texture and takes away the shine!
