Sagittarius A, our biggest hypothetical door to a white hole big bang in another universe so we can escape the heat death entropy of this one. Even if we can't get it to work in a 100 trillion years, it's like a mental "0" of a placeholder to deal with a current existential crisis.
Neutron stars are the coolest things out there - unlike black holes, they're physical objects that - in principle - you can see and study, and they're just about as weird. It would be especially wild to find one that's finally cooled off (and maybe spun down), so it's literally a big ball of neutrons that you could at least imagine studying up close (and living to write the paper.)
I just got into an Astrophysics PhD Program! StarTalk helped inspire me to pursue astrophysics for undergrad, so I wanted to say thanks for making this science accessible to everyone :)
They're back!! You two somehow pulled off a remote podcast seamlessly without missing the camaraderie that you get in person. But, to also now be in person again, makes it just that much more special!
I wish I could see them in person . I have to see Neil at least once in person. When I was young he helped me realize that even though I wasn’t a physicist I could understand the universe .
Chuck's got a way of getting Neil to explain his answers more thoroughly (and clearly) as well, that I love so much and miss whenever he's not in an episode!
Having you guys back together in person just makes me love the show all over again, not that I ever stopped loving the show but you know what I'm trying to say lol 😂😂
Cicero was a Roman senator, often considered the best statesman of Rome's history. He tried to keep the Roman Republic alive, and had some success for a while, but eventually he was proscribed by the soon to be first emperor of Rome, Octavian. Unrelated comment I know, but I found the talk about Cicero interesting and I recently watched a bunch of videos about the end of the Roman Republic which is why this was on my mind.
@@arizonacutlery547 I didn't say Rome died, I said the Roman Republic. This was around 40 BC, 5 centuries before the actual fall of the Western Roman Empire
@@christopher5958 Well my bad for specifying Octavian, but Cicero was proscribed by the second triumvirate as a whole, so Octavian, Antony, and Lepidus did; maybe Antony was "officially" the one who did but I am not sure, but it happened the same year Octavian was consul which is why I said he did.
I loved science in school and was told that my math skills were not good enough to consider a career in the field . But thanks to Neil ( my absolute favorite educator on all things Space Science and then some ) I feel like I have pretty good grasp on our universe. I do feel like so many things I learned in school are being challenged by new technologies, findings and ideas . I would recommend to anyone who enjoys Star Talk as much as I do to read Mr. Tyson’s books. He narrates many of the audiobooks as well . 😊
I love how much chuck has learned I’ve the years. I guess hanging out with Neil and guests and chatting you are going to learn much more than the average person. I’d consider him enlightened tier now
Exploring the universe through conversations like this one is a vivid reminder of how much there is to learn and wonder about. Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice have a unique ability to make complex scientific concepts both understandable and incredibly fascinating. Their banter and insightful dialogue bridge the gap between the known and the unknown, inviting us all to ponder the vast mysteries of the cosmos. This episode not only feeds our curiosity but also sparks a deeper appreciation for the beauty of scientific inquiry. It's a reminder that in the pursuit of understanding the universe, our imagination and questions are our most valuable tools.
I love the way Chuck makes Neil laugh so hard. Reminds me on one of my friends that cracks out a joke all the time that is not that funny but you get used to the person 😂

That is real-time translation to any language using the speaker's voice so I can show your videos to my daughters who don't speak English yet. I am so happy that Niel also thinks that Gladiator is the greatest movie of all time, because that is what I always have been saying. I can watch it 100 times, and it makes me weep every time. Cicero is indeed the servant of General Maximus Decimus Meridius.
Hi from Las Vegas. I attended engineering school in the '70s. A professor of mine proved mathematically that, given a steady consistent level of rain falling and steady winds, or none at all, that it did not matter whether you walked or ran through the rain and that one would get equally wet either way. Don't ask me to do the proof. His calculus equations were above my pay grade. I didn't get it then either. However, if one stops on the journey through the rain, you will get wetter. Result? If it's wet and cold, I run. If it's a warm rain, I walk. If a tropical squall, stop and enjoy the fragrant aromas released by the rains. Thanks for the fun show.
29:31 As a Washington resident, let a local help you out, Chuck. It's pronounced Pew-wall-up, named after one of our many tribes that represent this wonderful state. Our state fair used to have a catchy phrase to build anticipation for the event: "Do the wallup in Puyallup".

So cool to have you back together in the same room! Forgot to factor in wind when calculating rain accumulation. If it's sufficiently windy, the rain won't fall vertically, but at an angle, so that when you walk you'll accumulate more rain than if it would be no wind

I don't think I've heard you guys bring it up before, but the "Stargate" TV series has a lot of episodes that intersect with some of the topics you discuss (especially wormholes, which is what the "Stargate" itself essentially is). When you brought up the question regarding whether it would be dangerous to connect a wormhole on earth to one near a black hole, it reminded me of an episode where exactly that happened. The gate on earth was connected to another in a collapsing orbit around a black hole, and it caused both gravitational anomalies and time dilation in the area around the Stargate on earth that progressively got worse. The biggest plot hole IMO was that it didn't seem like the gate was pulling earth's atmosphere through it, but other than that it was a really interesting portrayal of theoretical wormhole physics concepts.
Luv you guys🫶🏿 Have you considered doing an Astronomy show in the Vegas Bubble. I think it would be awesome seeing the planets and stars fly by or supernovae as Neil explains them.

Greetings from Plymouth New Hampshire! Thank you for continuing to give all of us amazing knowledge and taking the time out of your day to do so. Stay safe out there.
Thanks for the great episode. One buck per thought here: 1) Angels are those who don't live by, as they would say "Classical" physics knowledge here on our planet. 2) A supermassive black hole is not infinitely dense, but infinitely voluminous (to an infinitesimally small volume).
7:27 Mythbusters actually tested the "running in the rain" thing and walking soaked the clothes less than running. They didn't even have puddles of water, so I am guessing you would get even wetter if you occasionally hit puddles of water.
Dr Tyson's revelation about that Belgian priest discovering the Big Bang theory reconciled my understanding of science and spirituality, and brings me to love the universe all that much more!!!
This is my favorite StarTalk session. I like the in-person interaction and the questions were quite thought provoking. Chuck's humor was more spot on than usual, probably because of the in person venue (or he just got a good night's sleep LOL!!) Thanks.
Regarding the walking in the rain discussion… Let’s assume the rain is falling uniformly - that is, each square unit of ground space receives the same amount of rainfall for a given period of time. If we are moving through that space the amount of rain hitting us from above will also be uniform just not the same raindrops will be making contact. So, what I am suggesting is that the vertical component of rain that hits the cross-sectional area that is facing up will not vary significantly as walking speed changes. The horizontal component is different as it is possible to collect a larger component of the rain that is falling down on the front side while not losing an equivalent amount on the back side.

About the rain question. For the sake of argument consider your body being a cuboid. How wet the top surface gets is only dependant on your time in the rain and not on your speed forward. How wet the front face gets is independent of time. Consider that the front face "digs a tunnel" through the rain. You can think of the rain moving down with v, or your body moving up with v through the rain standing still. Your body digs that tunnel through the rain drops independent of how fast you move forward. Your front face's total wetness is only dependent on the total distance, not on time. The total wetness of the cuboid is a constant from the front and a purely time dependent from the top. The minimization is simple: reduce the time spent in the rain. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!
Neil Degrasse Tyson does it again with another nonchalant response to a long needed clarification with entanglement with "They are born with it." Only Neil can clear things up" Thank you for "turning the lights on" ~David H.

Regarding the “On Earth as in the Heavens” question I recall Neill once said something like “there’s some evidence that physics might be slightly different in other parts of the cosmos”.
An experiment which could help to understand "Who gets wetter? Running vs. Walking" 1. Take two sets of exact same clothes. 2. Wear the first on Walking. 3. After experimenting, weigh those clothes 4. Repeat for Running There won't be a definite answer, but if this gets done by maximum amount of people then we could get an average.

Great to see Dr Tyson and the Lord back in person. Legacy Star talk I’m here for it ☺️

An experiment which could help to understand "Who gets wetter? Running vs. Walking"
1. Take two sets of exact same clothes.
2. Wear the first on Walking.
3. After experimenting, weigh those clothes
4. Repeat for Running
There won't be a definite answer, but if this gets done by maximum amount of people then we could get an average.
we love in person videos, keep doing them~! no more covid
