- Arrows? Or bolts? I call them arrows and I try to explain why I got into that habit in this video. I give a lot of other pointers I find useful, and answer a bunch of common questions I get about arrows in this video. I also discuss what arrows I use and why--a question I get asked quite frequently.

This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester 30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...

It's a strange world, I'm a compound bow shooter and I've had traditional bow guys mock me for using a "wheel" bow. Mean while the same guy hasn't shot a deer in forever, I kill at least 2 a year! What ever is legal to hunt with God bless you, it's all about freedom of choice. Great context, keep em coming.

Lol I'm behind everyone it's 2021 February and I just ordered my very first crossbow for me and my wife for Valentine's day. She always wanted a pistol crossbow and so I went and got her one and also a full length crossbow. So I googled what kind of bolts to use and found your video. I recently ordered my Luminated Diablo 18 inch arrows straight from Excalibur here in Canada.
EXCALIBUR GRZ2, my first crossbow, super accurate too.
Regarding weight - I use inserts in my arrows. What I do is, I weigh all my shafts, all my nocks, inserts and broadheads, and I select the lightest one of each. I then assemble a 'baseline' arrow using all those lightest components. Then for the rest of my arrows, I gather the components I intend to use to build the arrow, put them all on the scale, and then grind down the insert so that when the arrow is assembled it will weigh exactly the same as my baseline arrow.

Depends on the crossbow, I have carried the OB for miles without a sling but the Scorpyd is a little bit of a different story that's for sure

Rich, just wanted to wish you a great season, I've waited over a month past opening day as it stayed very warm until now. I call them arrows also, my Xbow shoots 20" shafts. I wound up with 3 in the freezer last year, all with the Barnett Recruit, 6 since I bought it, and love that bow. I started with a compound, still love them, still hunt with them, still kill deer with them, I never understood the animosity between x bow, and compound hunters, beyond the ignorance that divided .270/30-06 rifle hunters, ( I hunt with them also) and modern rifle/muzzleloader hunters) as Fred Bear said, we are all on the same side. I agree. Put a 22" crossbow "bolt" on a youth bow and all of a sudden it'll be called an "arrow". The projectile is based on the name of parameters of the projectile, not what it's shot from.

Good info, I am looking into crossbow humting and so I am compiling info.
Follow the bow manufacturer's recommendations regarding arrow weight and spine and nock type. To do otherwise may void your warranty and in fact be unsafe. Too weak a spine may cause an arrow to break when you trip the trigger (had that happen once with a new but defective arrow as I was testing a new xbow). Some plastic nocks will be destroyed when fired from a high energy bow. Or the string may slide over or under the arrow when shot thereby destroying the bow and potentially causing injury.
However, many arrows you buy off the shelf or even from bow manufacturers will group poorly because they are not spine nor weight matched. All arrows have what is referred to as a spine or stiff side. Where the spine is located will cause deviations in points of impact from arrow to arrow. Custom arrow makers like Firenock and South Shore Archery (and others) build weight and spine matched arrows that will group very tightly from one arrow to the next.
If you want to know how accurate (consistent POIs) your xbow is shoot a single arrow repeatedly. At 30 yards it should shoot repeatedly into almost the same hole. A good idea when you're sighting in your bow. Non-spine indexed arrows can vary widely in terms of points of impact even at short ranges.

Great advice on where to buy arrows. I did a search on Ebay for 2219s and found a great price on a dozen "2219s". After placing the order, I realized I had ordered them directly, FROM CHINA. My experience, several things I have ordered FROM CHINA, including supposed high end trail cameras 1080p (NOT!! ), have been poor quality, and basically dishonest in their advertising. Took them over a month to arrive. I have a weight scale and these arrows did not weigh what my current authentic 2219s weigh. They had no markings on them at all to identify what size shaft they were. At the very best, they were 2216s, and I suspect they may be 2213s. To add to the FRAUD, out of 12 arrows, 7 WERE BENT right out of the package. I tried to give them a bad review, but EBAY wants you to contact the seller before posting a bad review. I contacted them and their English was so bad, I just decided to forget it and acknowledge it as LESSON LEARNED.

And the guys who are trying to get crossbows banned from being a archery/ arrow shooting devise or whatever are nuts.thats just being liberal like.thanks again for putting that out there.

15:30 can confirm I’ve had an arrow shatter as soon as I shot it, luckily I wasn’t injured, I was more worried about the crossbow it was almost like dry firing it the arrow just exploded. (I use 220lb draw weight)

I tried to find the vid where you mention high FOC, I figure this is maybe a better place for my comment.
Not trying to be a goober but high FOC may help with penetration but the most redeeming quality in a bow over 350fps for me is accuracy. Especially in gusty winds or shooting through light grass, rain, etc.
The principle here is that weight is what carries the energy. Anything on the bolt/arrow with mass will play a huge part in determining initial trajectory right after the projectile leaves the rail.
A high FOC encourages a dart-like effect so if your shaft or vanes are bumped mid-flight the effect is dampened and the vanes ultimately correct much of it.
The drawback of course is potentially heavier/slower bolts and pushing the envelope for spine.
Modern carbon bolts can be easily made with a bunch of spine so that rarely factors unless you go insane.
In my opinion the best way to do this is to reduce arrow weight by the same amount you increase broadhead weight whenever possible. I seem to find that bows have a "sweet spot" for total grains per projectile where the ballistics are manageable while still producing plenty of power at the target. Altering total weight too much will generally create diminishing returns... However, by reducing one while increasing the other you can pretty safely get all the perks and none of the drawbacks.
Great video bro . My crossbow takes 16 inch bolts/arrows . My crossbow has been on the market for several years now and is very popular due to price point . For that reason bolts are somewhat easy to find .

Doesn't matter if you shoot compound or crossbow, I shoot both, as long as you are taking responsible and ethical shots.
You can compensate for forward of center with lighted nocks by increasing the tip weight (but the spine may be affected).. Also, I agree with most of what you say but sometimes there are better arrows than what the factory ships or recommends.. I advocate not going any lighter than what the factory recommends.. With high powered crossbows I really don't recommend shooting light arrows because the energy that does not get transfered into the arrow goes back into the bow as a form of dry-fire (not good).. Both of my crossbows will shoot a 400 grain arrow in excess of 375 fps (365 grain arrows exceeds 390 fps).... for this reason I shoot arrows that weight over 450 grains (between 450-500) to bring the velocity down (under 350 fps) and also to make the bow more efficient and more accurate and a tad more quiet.. There is no real benefit of exceeding 350 fps anyway.. A good speed range for crossbows is 280-340 fps.. Not many people will shoot beyond 50 yards with most at around an average of 25 yards.. And when you break everything down you may be talking 1/40 of a second at 25 yards - nothing to be concerned about and fpe from 90-125 or so - both will get it done with no trouble - all depends how deep in the dirt you want your arrow to be after a pass through.. I hunt with both crossbow and compound and the only difference is that with crossbow it allows someone not to practice as much and crossbows also offer more humane kills by being a tad more accurate with the average shooter, and crossbows may extend your accurate distance a little.. (I generally won't shoot beyond 35-40 yards with a compound but will take a 45-50 yard shot with a crossbow because I know it will hit where intended..).. With both compound and crossbow I prefer the 15-25 yard shots no matter which one I am using.. And now being 70 years old I am not too fond of drawing a 60-70 lb compound much anymore (turned it down closer to 50 lbs).. I advocate crossbows during regular archery season because there are plenty of hunters using compounds that can't hit the broad side of a barn and are wounding more than killing and they would benefit by using a crossbow..

Great video series thanks for posting. Just a quick question relating to manufacturers required arrow weight. Does the weight of the arrow include or exlcude the tip? My crossbow says minimum 375 grains, but I ordered some arrows that arrived with my bow and they are only 325 grains but I have 100 grain tips. So am I good or do I need to order heavier arrows? Thanks a lot
+Jordan Bajcar that's a very good question! usually it is referring to the whole Arrow rig. In other words, the arrow plus the Broadhead. My arrows are about 265 grains for the shaft and 100 grains for the broadhead for a total of around 365 grains. Excalibur recommended minimum of 350 for my crossbow. So they are talking about both the arrow in the Broadhead. I hope that helps, good luck!

I bought my first crossbow when I was 16 or 17 I'm now 48 just a little history about crossbow arrows or bolts you might find interesting back then the arrows were aluminum and you had no nocks on them both ends of the shaft had flat inserts in them there was no reason for a nock the end of the arrow sat against the string itself the accuracy was dead on back then and 200 fps was considered fast when I was 19 or 20 I bought a compound bow and gave the crossbow to a friend all these years later I suffered a shoulder injury and just bought another crossbow and while I agree to a point that its safer to stay with what your manufacturer might suggest I believe that it's up to the individual what he or she does with their archery equipment and as long as they follow the charts from arrow manufacturers as to weight and spine of the arrow they can do it safely and possibly pick up some more speed of course they will have to resight the crossbow to accurately shoot the new arrows, I myself am very anal when it comes to sighting in every little thing I change I resight my new crossbow and can tell you that I have it driving tacks
I know this is an old video but just saw it and wanted to add a few points as well as correct one thing. First point. YES USE THE NOCK STYLE YOU BOW IS MADE FOR. If you have a flat back you MUST use a flat back or it will cause whats called front end damage. Using a half moon inplace of a flat back and leaves a very small gap (you my not even see it) can puts stree on the string the serving and the limbs because for a SPLIT SECOND there is 0 weight on the string and then BAM you just added weight. Its like compairing aswingint a bat then hitting the ball. Using a flatback in place of a half moon doesnt do that but many bows that use half moons require the nock to activate the anti dryfire mechanism so a flat backs dont do that. Foc is important but its not as bad as it seems you need about a minimum 7% Foc to get decent fight and penitration. Now what i want to correct is buying from amazon. If you buy from amazon and it says AMAZON IS THE SELLER that is an item that Amazon bought directly through the manufacturer to sell to consumers. And yes they ARE AN AUTHORISED SELLER. Many times companies wont list them as an authorised seller because of contracts with other retailers. It coube with a place like cabelas or a privately owned shop. They do this to help keep the brick and mortor big box and private shops from being outsold by amazon. If you read the fine print in a lot of warrenties they will state if you dont buy from an authorised seller they dont cover the item. This is because many of the non authories sellers dont buy from the manufacturers so it meens you are not the original purchaser. HOW WEVER this is not (allways) the case with buying from amazon as long as amazon is the seller. If amazon is listed as the seller when you buy amd item off there it will allways be from the manucaturer and NEVER a counter fit item. The video (though he may not of known) should of stated that there is a seller list (most of the time) to choose from. If its prime eligible about 80% of the time amazon is the seller. Also if it turns out that the item you bought from another seller is counterfit amazon will get you a refund as long as you file a clame within 30 days of the date amazon says it was delivered to you door (noth the shipping date but the date the carrier:ups usps fedex: said it was delivered).

*The Dr. Stirrup brand "safety stirrup" for Excalibur Crossbows.... is well worth having. It does not resonate the sound of the arrow launch as much as the metal hoop... It allows a two feet in use stance for a centered pull on the string for more accuracy... ...and it protects the crossbow user from injuries when loading, unloading and when carrying the bow with razor sharp arrow heads on arrows.... In my opinion Well worth the $100. price in 2018*

We can only use crossbows during firearm season which I agree with. Hunting with a vertical bow is much more difficult. You could put a good rifle shooter behind a high end compound cross bow shooting off a bi pod and get hits at 100yrds easy. Try doing that with a compound bow it ain't so easy. Trigger punch, form, breathing, muscle memory, shoulder and back strength all take time to learn
How many arrows do you need? How long before they should be replaced?
If you hunt, I say a quiver full that you test and that fly the same. I killed a dozen animals with the same arrow over time, but ive had other arrows break off on first animal. It all depends. Good luck!

I use non luminated for pratice and luminok for hunting. from my experience it's 5 grains more than normal diablo bolts.

No, I just use 150 grain heads and sight in for those

Flat nocks seem like a very expensive endeavor. You've said multiple times that you're not one to spend hours a week shooting in the backyard and you already gotta replace nocks? Gonna be a lot in nocks and glue
Recurve crossbows typically require flat nocks, this video is old but I have been using Burt Coyote Lumenoks for ages and I have no intention of switching

I am a paraplegic hunter and am considering hunting with a crossbow. I really like the ex-caliber line and I am one that believes having less things to go wrong is better. I am just wondering how hard would it be for me to cock one ? Is it real hard with a rope cocker? I see you can buy hand cranks but some are noisy and Price will bring the bow up $100-$200 more. what are your thoughts? I like the Matrix 355/360.
The Rope Cocker on the older bows is fine. I have no trouble with it. But it might be too much for you, you probably won't know without trying. The hand cranks on the new ones are incredible. I think like 12 lb of pressure is all and the newest ones can't spin out of control so they're pretty safe from what I can tell. I really think the hand crank is the way to go for you or maybe one with the gas powered cocking mechanism.

Have some but have not shot them. Nothing wrong IF weights are ok and you spin them. But I've killed all my deer with carbon, no reason to switch...
Please tell me 265 grains is without the points! That's way too light for a crossbow. Thats almost dry firing

This season will be the first where I use a crossbow (Excalibur Grz2). I like the idea of using lumenoks. The Diablo arrows that came with the crossbow have flat aluminum noks. I'd like to replace them with Lumenoks. The challenge I see is removing the aluminum noks. Do you have any pointers on replacing the aluminum noks with Lumenoks? I should add that I have learned so much from your channel and am a subscriber.
Thanks for subscribing, I'm going to do a video on that down the road but you basically have to heat them up to melt the glue and then remove them. It's a little complicated and I have not done it well yet. When I figure it out, I will post a video.
Until then, I just go to a shop have it done

+Fxmakeupbygordo ahhhh, good question! My original batch did not have them so I added them. I only buy them with the Lumenok now though. When they run out I have the local shop replace.
can puting bigger cams on a compound crossbow add power and velocity or will it loose power and velocity
+the master of Random 101 size and shape of cams can affect power, but there are a lot of other things like Powerstroke that go into that. Overall, I would not mess with cams. It's designed to have whatever cams that it came with. Stick with those. Just my thoughts.

I am shooting and x-caliber Matrix 330 I am looking for some advice on what grain Broadhead I like the hundred grain what's your opinion
100 or 150, that should shoot pretty much anything LOL
I understood bolts are shorter then arrows and darts are even smaller, but yes i agree they are still arrows.
i have a old barnett wildcat lll recurve crossbow and now i purchased a new recruit crossbow. i still want to use the old wildcat. the bolts for the wildcat are 16 inches long and have flat nocks. my recruit takes the 20 inch arrow or bolts with the half moon nocks. i ordered a dozen 16 inch bolts for the wildcat and they came with the half moon nocks so i ordered some flat nocks to replace them with. it is starting to get to be a pain in the butt looking for the old flat nocks especilly in the lighted nock. i decide to call the manufacturer to find out if the half moon nocks would work in my old cross bow. the answer was yes and the company recomends using half moon nocks in the old crossbows and the new ones. saved myself work and money by making that phone call
I definitely would go with what they say, that's for sure, and just keep an eye on it. I have not had trouble finding flat Knox that are lighted. I use the burt coyote lumenoks. I haven't bought any since last year but I hope they aren't in short supply LOL.
@@Deathbybunjie i've decided to use the clean shot lighted nocks. i got the flat ones for 15 dollars for a three pack on ebay. the half moon nocks are like 27 bucks

What are your thoughts on crossbows from Walmart? Im thinking bout getting my first one from there, the 150lb draw one, and how do you think it would work for hunting? How do inknow what length bolt/arrow to use?

hey buddy, what would your opinion be on running a 150gr broadhead on a 420 assassin. excalibur have them use 100gr. what I dont understand is to go down in weight at the end, but make it heavier in the bolt.
Either one is fine, I really like the 150 grain rage trypans, my daughter uses them

can I use slightly heavier 22 bolts than my recommended total 380grain headhunter arrows.
I have a whitetail hunter STR and it came with head hunters, but they are so expensive to keep purchasing. I found cheaper 22 bolts on eBay & and they are of the same inch, but the total weight is 465 grains with a 125 grain field point. When my manual states I should use a 280 grain bolt with a 100 grain arrowhead. Would it be Ok if I use the cheaper ones in my crossbow eventhough they are slightly heavier?
Or could damage be caused by it
A little heavier is ok, just don't go lighter. Will need to sight in for them of course. Good luck!
@@Deathbybunjie okay thank you, i called up the company i ordered my Crossbow from. They recommended i only buy headhunters and no other bolt. Eventhough i stated that the cheaper ones i found were abit heavier. Yet they still insisted i buy the more expensive headunters or the others could blow my crossbow. Is is true?
Probably just want extra money out of me
@@armaanhafiz I doubt that it is going to be a problem with heavier ones, but length and the nocks you use do make a difference.

#1 Complaint about Crossbows...the bolts kept getting stuck in the target. I tried to use WD40 hoping it would help, I lost three bolts to getting stuck in the target (Force of habit in terms of calling them bolts)
no problem, call 'em what you like, i know what you mean! ;) are you using proper field points? they should slow the penetration. also, a good target? (and shoot at different spots to slow the wear on the target.) just some quick thoughts, good luck.
Tried some Scorpion Venom Arrow Release Fluid it helped, as for the targets I shoot at a range in a state park so they're not high quality (I live in the suburbs and my backyard is too small for target shooting) , also turns out I was using field points for normal arrows not crossbow bolts

How much does the diameter of a bolt matter?

It matters a lot. If you use a different outer diameter shaft, the arrow will sit too high or too low in the arrow channel of the rail. Which will change how the string contacts the nock. Vary much and you run the risk of a partial dryfire as the string may ride up over the top of the shaft or below it. Most manufacturers (Excalibur included) have settled on an OD of 11/32" for the shaft. Almost all arrows marketed for crossbows will have shafts of that OD.
a very good point abut the nock. thank you. it could also make a difference on how the broadhead mounts on the arrow, now that i think about it. too great a diameter shaft means the shaft could act as a field point with the smaller broadhead shaft; too thin a diameter shaft and your broadhead overhangs creating less strength--yeah, stick with the 11/32" is very good advice.

I’m new to archery and I’m trying to find the right arrow setup for my sniper elite whisper 370. Where do I find the manufacture recommendations. Theres a specification chart in the manual and on the outside of the box but it seems like that’s the specifications for what was included in the box. I would assume somewhere there’s a tolerance range for the grain of arrows the crossbow should shoot?
Does the manufacturer have a website that tells anything?
hey man um i got one very important question for ya to answer................. can the shape (not size) but can the shape of the broadhead on a crossbow effect the flight path of the arrow, like will it cause the arrow to go to the left or to the right, or will it cause it to go up and farther than field points. its a very good question and you should make a video on answering it. and im still trying to build my channel but if you could give a shout out or post this question on video it would be much appreciated
+the master of Random 101 very good question, and yes a good idea for a video. The short answer is yes I can make a difference. With fixed broadheads, specifically, they sometimes need to be tuned to make sure that they fly consistent with the fletchings. Some fixed broadheads act like fletchings on the front end of The Arrow if that makes any sense.

This is absolutely the case. You have to remember that crossbows are much higher velocity weapons in general than compounds. And since crossbow arrows are shorter, they tend to be less stable. That's why mechanicals tend to fly better than fixed blade heads. So, you want to try to shoot a broadhead that has as little profile as possible. Here are a couple of recommendations: One is the NAP Spitfire Double Cross. They fly very well. But perhaps the best flying broadhead I've seen is made by Thorn Archery. a relatively new company out of North Carolina. Their blades are completely enclosed inside the ferrule and they fly better than any broadhead I've ever seen
My new Barnett Whitetail Hunter SRT came with 22" Headhunter arrows with 125 grain field tips. The box says: 435 grain total* The bow's [advertised] speed is calculated using 411 grain 22 inch arrows. What happens if I use a shorter, lighter arrow?
Avoid shorter arrows for safety reasons. They are designed for a certain length to make sure they protrude into the Stirrup area so you can't put your foot in there while there's an arrow loaded. Also, if you use a lighter Arrow, you risk the effect of a dry fire because there's not enough resistance. Hope that helps!.
This is a somewhat informative video but what a lot of crossbow guys don't think of which every recurve shooter and compound shooter must learn is dynamic spine of an arrow if an arrow is improperly spined this will dramatically change the point of impact and grouping in crossbows the spine is adjusted by the length and total weight of the arrow this is why manufacturers have these detailed information for the performance of each crossbow adding to much weight will weaken the causing impact right of point of aim and to little weight will cause to stiff of spine causing a left impact of point of aim so to go against the advise of a manufacturer is taking all the math they did for best possible flight and throwing it out the window a 1/4 in of arrow length can change spine dramatically same as weight so if you add weight with a knock you should remove equal weight of the rear of the arrow like lighter fletching just to give you an idea of how tight tolerance is in archery for best flight and accuracy match recommendations good luck and have fun shooting
