    Note for smoother steering with a joystick: you can push the joy stick up and just move it to the left and right along the edge and it will look smoother. It's pretty hard to get a hold of since you have to constantly remember not to let go but worth it I think if you don't have the money to drop on a new controller like that.

    • @thesprawl2361
      @thesprawl2361 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought one after watching Hoki's first video - I play a lot of Horizon and in FH5 it's no better than the analogue stick. I'm a drifter mainly, so maybe racers find it more useful, but it just feels like a gimmick to me. The same kind of jerky adjustments you make when drifting with the analogue stick in RWD cars are there with the wheel module too. It doesn't feel any smoother.
      I don't know if anyone else realised this, but I didn't before I got it - the wheel only moves 90 degrees. It doesn't rotate 360(or even 1080) like a sim wheel. You maybe realised this already but I didn't notice it in Hoki's video so I was expecting full rotation of the wheel. But it just traces a quarter-circle, and I'm not sure it does anything different mechanically from the analogue stick itself, since the analogue stick also traces a quarter circle when moved left to right(place the xbox pad flat on a table and keep your eyes level with the table, then move the analogue stick left and right and you can see this is true)
      My recommendation would be to get an Elite pad instead. This controller is nice, and I love Horizon so I'm a sucker for Horizon merch, but its main feature feels gimmicky. It's also outrageously expensive and can't be used wirelessly.

  • @thesprawl2361
    @thesprawl2361 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I bought it last week, partly after watching your review video. Unless I'm missing something, the 'wheel', basically the whole reason I got it, isn't any more sensitive than the analogue stick it replaces, and I was both surprised and very disappointed to discover(again, AFAICT) that the 'wheel' only rotates 180 degrees. I had assumed - maybe I was naive - that the wheel would have at least 360 degree rotation, maybe even 720 or 1080. But it doesn't. It's absolutely no different from moving the analogue stick left and right. All it has done is moved the arc of the analogue stick's half-circle travel from being perpendicular with the controller, to being parallel.
    I've been meaning to get a new controller since I've been through _five_ Series X controllers since the console came out, so in that sense it's not a massive financial regret - but it is a very big disappointment. Anyone who's expecting/hoping that the 'wheel' will act like a scaled down version of a real wheel that you rotate with your thumb, be warned that it's really just a different way of moving the analogue stick. I'm not even sure it's any more sensitive for driving.
    In fact, if you think about it, racing game developers could just use the analgue stick as a wheel, in the sense that one full rotation of the stick would be one rotation of the wheel. In this imaginary scenario the stick wouldn't recenter like a wheel, as that would mean the stick would have to come to rest pointing 'upwards' rather than just spring back into the middle as it does now. But it would at least have more sensitivity in principle than this gimmicky controller, and it would at least be capable of a full rotation of the wheel.
    My advice is avoid this, avoid it _big time,_ and get an Elite controller instead. This is something that you'll use once or twice then never again. Also...it's wired.

    • @joaopaulo-ms5it
      @joaopaulo-ms5it ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty sure the point of it is just to give you more travel to each side so you have better fine input. It is absolutely not the same as moving an analog stick left and right. The base of the stock Xbox one pad stick only moves half a centimetre to each side, I can't measure this module but it moves so much more.

    • @thesprawl2361
      @thesprawl2361 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joaopaulo-ms5it No, that's what I thought at first, but the analogue stick traces out a semi circular arc in physical space in the same way as the wheel. Like I said, that arc is just perpendicular to the pad rather than flush against it like the arc traced by the wheel module is. The stick doesn't just move left and right, it moves left and down, and right and down, because the stick itself is mounted on a ball.
      So the amount of fine control this wheel gives you compared to the stick is minimal. It may give you a little more, but the stick is not made for fine control and the movement left and right with the stick has a huge number of dead zones, and those dead zones are built into the controller's software, they don't go away when you plonk a gimmicky wheel on the top instead. All the wheel does is lurch through those dead zones a little more slowly and tentatively, which makes very little difference, as you can tell in practice if you use it to drift RWD.

    • @wiegraf9009
      @wiegraf9009 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the same thought originally, but if there were more rotation it would strain your thumb. It's kind of a problem with the idea.

    • @thesprawl2361
      @thesprawl2361 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wiegraf9009 I think it probably would too, our thumbs aren't really built for it. But I'd like to have had the option, at the very least for a full rotation, maybe more. If it h ad given me that option, and if that option had actually made my drifting(especially in RWD cars) smoother, I might have considered shifting the way I grip the pad completely, in order to take advantage of the finer control. But hey ho.
      Maybe next generation MS can think about different solutions to this problem in a new pad, with new software.

      @@thesprawl2361 I don't understand what you mean. To steer you move the stick straight left and right. That's 0,5 centimetres of travel to each side. This thing looks like it moves about 90º to each side which probably equates to several centimetres. How can the fine control gain be so minimal?
      Why compare the internals of a regular stick to this? They won't be the same.

      I keep both analog sticks on aswell as the wheel. I use the wheel with my left thumb and for most car racing my right thumb simutaneously operates the clutch (R) analog and handbrake (L) analog with ease. I havent tried my motorcycle sims yet but I'm confident that I'll be able to operate the "Weight shift" in the same manner. I have most of the biking sims so as soon as I re-download them, will test.

    I just picked this up about a week ago. This controller has a tendency to have issues with some games. While it worked fine with Assetto Corsa and f1 24, it caused hard PC crashes on ACC and Moto GP 21 for me. Basically once the race officially started, my PC would basically shut down and reboot when the XR Pro was plugged in. I've read that some people said if you turn off the rumble feature in most games that should fix the issue but that wasn't the case for me with those titles. I believe there is some driver conflict with the Thrustmaster software and certain games. Just wanted to give others a heads up..

    Would be interesting to see how this would with motorcycle games like motoGP or Ride. I've always found them the most difficult style of racing games to be precise when turning. It would take away the weight transfer controls, but might be worth it...

      The precision with this controller is amazing.. It has only 95* left to right but honestly feels like 270* for precision then when quick contersteering is required it can feel like its only 35* to turn.... Game changer, literally. I have a FFB wheel but mostly I drive with controller and this one has given me the edge that a wheel can provide whilst also being much quicker for counter steering.

    Surprised being from that era, he didnt bring up the obvious inspiration for this pad...... unless he wasnt a fan of PS1 or Namco racing games, then the device wouldve been really niche and rare..... The Namco Negcon is THE BEST racing devised pad EVER that i have tried to find ways of working for PS2 / PS3 / PS4 lol im sure when i get round to it if want to the PS5....
    But its not even the Negcon that this device takes its inspiration from but the sequel to the Negcon the Namco Jogcon! Which I didnt find as easy or as accessible, maybe because of the placement of the wheel which is placed dead centre of the pad!
    Anyway Negcon was an accessory made by Namco for PS1's CyberSled and Ridge Racer and Ace Combat series! And if you imagine the remote control car gun type controllers back in the day, it was intuitivly like that but even more ergonomic!
    I have been wishing either Namco or Sony revive this device! I think Namco owns the patent or design and Sonys dualshock killed Namcos Negcon through eventual updates!
    Also the Jogcon isnt the only precursor to this type of mini wheel control scheme and because theres a few videos on youtube of people modding the PS1 era Negcon to work on up to PS3 playing wipEout, i did tons of research looking for a Negcon alternative like experience.... there are a few PS2 / PS3 3rd party madcatz i think like pads out there..... i just wish there was a similar official Sony or GT pad out there that did this

    The biggest difference will probably be with FWD cars. In Forza Horizon controller assist often works against player when driving with controller, while in Dirt Rally and AC it's tone down making cars more controllable, but because of that FWD cars are very understeery, all way to complete lockup even during mild manouvers.

    Honestly it feels like the red dial on the logitech series wheels just a tad smoother. Still has that slight clunk to it. I feel like if the made it with springs to self center when released vs it being a tap over like a joystick it would actually be mildly enjoyable. And switch from the tiny stepper gears to something similar to a potimeter it could become really smooth for users. As of now its really not much different then the attachment that connects to the joystick with a lil steering wheel on it. The ones that are typically just 3d printed

I play Assetto Corsa on PC with a controller and my experince is near Forza Motorsport, the only difference being the handling model and physics that are different, and all because I found my perfect settings for Xbox One/Series controller, this simple. You can use it whatever layout you choose without any complicated setup. Does your vibration work?
    in the thrustmapper app it shows the controller has trigger and wing vibration settings but there isnt any actual trigger vibration/response. The vibration feels very weak in all games ive tried it in compared to a normal xbox controller and it also feels uneven. The left side has a slower, harder rotation while the right side feels quicker but its very soft.
    Is this how theyre suppose to be? Im really curious if this is how it should be operating. The vibration test in the app never replicates its "test strength" in any game ive tried.
    It feels like kind of a miss compared to the feed back of a normal xbox controller. The feed back on those generates a better feel as to what the cars tires are experiencing like slipping, bumps, etc. For the price point I was really kina expecting that level of quality but I dont feel it.
