Thanks for the shout! I still say that my reading has doubled since last year and your channel is partly responsible for that. Thanks for being a motivating force in reading for the entire community. Happy New Year! - MJ
I "only" read 46 books in 2023. It's the most I've ever read in a year. I don't think I can push myself past that, without losing the pleasure of reading. Have to say, Booktube has been a great way to find what to read next. Anyways, happy new year.
Lots of people want to say they've run a marathon, but many of them don't really like running. People who say they want to read a lot of books but don't know how really just don't like reading that much. 385 books is a great year, Olly -- congratulations!
I decided late last year I wanted to rediscover my love of reading, I read alot when i was a kid and I missed that feeling of being lost in another world. Through that interest I discovered great booktubers like yourself and Plaguedbyvisions. I really credit the two of you for making me a reader again and I'm happy to say I set a goal of 25 books this year and I'm about 100 pages away from completing that goal with 10 or so hours to go! I was so happy to discover that books still are the most immersove form of media, I haven't lost that childhood spark.
I don’t think I could read more in a year than I do unless I was to stop watching Booktube and scrolling on the internet. If I gave up my phone I reckon I could break 200 but I don’t want to! 😂 The number of books read is not important to me, only that I’m enjoying my reading. I think my most important tip if anyone wanted to read more is just to try making it a habit, even if that’s just 20 minutes a day at first. If I have a day where I don’t read I usually feel sad about it. Happy New Year Olly. 😊
I've had a really good year - 123 books!! No audio or manga, just books. My secret is, I quit watching TV towards the end of Dec 2022. Also, I read 6 or 7 books at once so when one gets a little ho hum, I switch. Eye strain is the most limiting situation for me. Hope 2024 is filled with health and happiness for you and your loved ones!!🎉🎉
When I was getting eye strain I got a LED light I can bend and aim right where I need it. Also I had my eyes checked and got new glasses. This time they suggested eye wipes to keep the area around the eyes clean. Also an eye mask you heat in a microwave briefly and hold on for 2-3 minutes. After all that for a few weeks my eyes greatly improved.
I began reading very young and daily. Influenced by my grandparents and their extensive collection of mass market paperbacks,I skipped middle grade books . Sometimes I would read a novel (200-300 pages)before school, one during the school day, and another that evening. These weren’t anything special, just the typical bestseller list titles. I read over 100 pages per hour, if uninterrupted. Over the course of time, I realized that I was just gulping fast food and not really improving my intellect. I decided to read at a more measured, leisurely pace and choose more meaningful content for myself. This lasted for about five years, until I stopped enjoying it. I wanted to read for enjoyment, too, not just for the sake of learning. Unsurprisingly, this coincided with university graduation, while I commuted to work on the train. Now I’m choosy, but without genre limits, and I’m a much happier reader. Wishing everyone a prosperous 2024! 😺✌️
I actually am going to try to read less this year. For myself, I’ve noticed I’m escaping into books and neglecting other things in my life. Also will read what I love and not what I think I “should” be reading.
Wow, that's a heck of a lot of books... more than one a day!! You must be a very fast reader. I'm retired and don't watch TV and do little else but read, but I only read 75 last year. A few years ago I was laid up for a while following an operation and did nothing but read, but even then I managed 'only' 120 books in the year, so to read more than 3 times that is very impressive. Well done..!
I busted my ass and got 135 books read this year. That's my personal record... I usually average more around 60-something. And I read a lot of pretty short things, lots of old westerns. I can't even image over 365. Even if I quit my job I don't think I could manage that, unless I just skimmed things, and then I wouldn't count them.
When you got to the part about "if I watch a movie on my own, I start getting jittery and feel like I should be reading a book" - yes, that. I noticed over the past 15 years that I stopped watching a lot of movies and TV. I was thinking it was because video was too slow, and that's part of it, but really, it's that there's this giant list of books I want to read and that takes precedence over just about any movie or or TV show I can think of.
I started watching your channel late in 2022. I decided to challenge myself to read more in 2023. My goal was 2 books a month. I finished the year reading 50 books and 33 graphic novels for a total of 83. Now to see if I can break that record in 2024. Happy New Year!
This was really good Olly, and I’m impressed it supercharged your reading so much. I can see why though. I enjoy tv and video games too much, but I still get a decent amount of reading done.
Well said. This is what my reading habits look like too. 2023 was a 'bad' year, with quite a few months where I felt like I was barely reading and hardly finishing, and I still finished over 260 books. I have been watching booktube videos and interacting a bit, in part to get a sense of how I want to make my own videos on my channel, but my default activity is always reading.
Whoa, that's impressive! I love MJ's videos on this topic, after watching two of them I read three extra books last week haha. Sometimes the secret to reading more is picking up the book and reading versus watching hours of YT or playing games or doing nothing. I feel like once I have the book in my hands I don't just read for 5 minutes, if my toddler isn't bugging me for something I can read for an hour straight or more. Happy New Year to you and your family and this awesome bookish community you created Olly.
I'm A freak as well. No tv , no movies, seldom go on my computer. Reading is my #1 past time because I enjoy it. Since I got my kitten I haven't spent as much time reading. I play fetch with him to much lol. I'm retired and read 330 books this last year.
I read 158 books this year which is triple the goal I set for myself. Your channel and BookTube in general have been great motivating factors. Reading was my main hobby in 2023. Will it be the same in 2024? We'll see! 🤓
385 books is impressive. I read 18 books in 2023 but I really enjoyed some of them. I found some favoriates, so I can accept quality over quantitiy. Your channel inspired me to read more in 2024!
You bastard. You sent me down a spiral of publishing my own books. I published 17 titles in 2022 and 22 titles in 2023. You are killing me out here bro. THanks.
Good Golly Miss Molly!!! That’s an average of one book a day Olly!! Congratulations! What an accomplishment! I only read 47 this year. But thoroughly enjoyed myself. I am going to read the Alien book you recommended the other day. Read a handful of books you introduced to your kind audience. Tried the rats one, but I freely confess I wimped out when the critters appeared. (My husband called it.) Will try again with all lights on this time. 😬 Best to you, yours, and all viewers this 2024. 🕊️👋🏻
I used to beat myself up for not reading 'enough', for the years where I only read a handful, literally, of books. Now I've read about 40-50 books a year for the past few years, and try to be okay with that! I do have a lot of different interests, so if I want to watch a movie, I do that, if I want to crochet and watch a show or youtube for 7 hours, or paint, I do that. We have to search for these simple things that bring us joy. Well, I do. :)
You're definitely right about the 'sacrifice' element of reading more - since my book consumption has gone through the roof I've hardly watched any TV or film (which I previously watched loads of). But it doesn't feel like a sacrifice to be honest, as I find books infinitely more enjoyable! The one thing I don't want to miss out on is gaming - that's still a huge part of my life in terms of hobbies. I always make sure I put a bit of playtime aside to keep that hobby going 🙂 To be honest, if it wasn't for BookTube I doubt I'd read as much as I do - making videos, chatting with folks and enjoying the books are all inexorably intertwined for me. When I read something, or watch or play for that matter, I want to talk about it! Do you think you'd still read 300+ books a year if you weren't doing BookTube? Would you read even more if you didn't have to devote time to making content? Great video, mate :-)
I read 104 books in 2023. I also read 1/2 of about 10 books. One I read 500 pages which was almost half. Those cut into my total. I also spent all of June moving a few 1000 books during a move. Etc. Anyway,😊 I’m amazed at how many you can read.
I like the honesty and empathy in the video. Your kind of numbers wouldn't be a goal for me as I have other fulfilling parts of my life that I wouldn't want to lose. Besides the fact that often when I want to read I'm too tired so I've made my peace with that and read when I can. I'm creating a lesser goal on goodreads even for me next year because I want to write another novel. Gigging will be busier next year than last year too now we have replaced our bass player. I love reading but you can't beat live music for unforgettable moments in life.
I read 109 books in 2023. 60 were physical books, a mixture of fiction and non-fiction. I read a few chonky 500/600 page books last year too. The other books were audiobooks which can be great when you’re cooking etc. you’re not a freak, I spend a lot of time reading.
I have a friend who finished their reading so that put me in my place. Also, I just want to be a receptacle for media honestly. I have major FOMO so I’m curious about everything.
You. Are. Not. A. Freak! I have seen a few social media posts from people defending the amount people read because the shaners are coning out of the woodwork saying those who read a lot of books are fake or lying! We should not have to explain how we manage the amount we read! I don't care how many, when, why or how a person consumes books I just want to know they enjoyed them which is why I like booktube so much as I feel like I never find anyone who doesn't feel that way as well.
Thanks Lynnette! This wasn't a response to any kind of shaming, more just a personal reflection on the fact that I'm a bit unusual when it comes to my reading and I wouldn't want anyone to think they're missing out by not reading as much
This still baffles me. As you say, if you’re not spending time with family or working, you’re reading. However, if one sleeps 5 hours per night and works 8 hours per day, that leaves 11 hours to fit in reading. Are folks like you speed readers? I read every day. Between work and family obligations I manage 10-15 pages per day. On a good day of rain and alone time, 20-30 pages. But typically I’m finishing a 300 page book every 2 weeks and thusly manage 20-24 books a year pending lengths. People who know me say I’m always reading. I watch little television and even read while walking the dog. I don’t doubt anyone’s claims to reading hundreds of books annually, but how in the heck does someone read one book per day???? Amazing.

I listen to audiobooks, and my goal for this year is to read more. I can listen to one per day or two, if i put it on while doing other things.
My favourite thing about Booktube is that there’s a cushioning and rarely is there any pressure.
i read for two to three hours per day. It's time and dedication really. Sometimes after reading a hefty book of a thousand pages or more then I'll take a break for three or four days. Your book totals amazing though. That's more than a book per day.
Maybe it’s me but I’m so quality conscious about media consumption that I feel like I’m not spontaneous enough.
Olly what do you do for a living? Do you have time to read at work?
How many of those were good and how many were bad?
Also how many DNFs over the last year?
I’ve decided stay off of Instagram reels this year. That’s how I’m going to make a whole lot more time to read.
Four or five a month for me, so 50 or 60 a year. That’ll do for me. I’ve other pleasures/responsibilities so will never get to a book a day levels.
