  • The 1968 Kander and Ebb musical "Zorba" returned to Broadway in 1983, with stars Anthony Quinn and Lila Kedrova repeating the roles they had played in the hit non-musical source film "Zorba the Greek." Kedrova won an Oscar for the film and took home a Tony Award for this stage production. As she lies dying, Madame Hortense (Kedrova) recalls her sixteenth birthday in "Happy Birthday." Then (at 3:47) Zorba (Quinn) and Niko (Jeff McCarthy, who replaced Robert Westenberg) say farewell in "I Am Free." Debbie Shapiro was "The Woman" (referred to as The Leader in the original Broadway production). Lyrics are below:
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY
    So young!
My mother dressed me in a white organdy gown,
and she said, “Ladies and Gentlemen,
    my beautiful daughter!
    It’s her birhtday, she’s 16 years old.”
    And my mother said,
    “You will dance through life.
You will dance all through life!”
My mother says that little girls are made of sugar.
    Happy birthday! (Happy birthday!)
My mother says my life will be a wide, white ribbon.
    Happy birthday! (Happy birthday!)
And all my tomorrows are waiting in a line
Shimmering, glimmering, soon to be mine.
    My mother says,
She looks at me and she remembers.
    Happy birthday! (Happy birthday!)
She envies me the love I’m just about to see.
But she was yesterday (she was yesterday)
    And I’m tomorrow (I’m tomorrow)
    Happy birthday (Happy birthday)
    To me!
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
    Happy birthday! (Happy birthday!)
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
    Happy birthday! (Happy birthday!)
And all my tomorrows are waiting in a line
Shimmering, glimmering, soon to be mine.
    My mother says,
She looks at me and she remembers.
    Happy birthday! (Happy birthday!)
She envies me the love I’m just about to see.
But she was yesterday (she was yesterday)
    And I’m tomorrow (I’m tomorrow)
    Happy birthday (Happy birthday)
    Happy birthday (Happy birthday)
    Goodbye, Canavaro!
    Goodbye, Bouboulina!
    Don’t forget me…
    I AM FREE
I have nothing. I want nothing.
    I am free!
I need nothing. I owe nothing!
    I am free!
If my feet say, “Come this way!”
    I probably would,
    But if they say,
“Go that way!” that way is just as good.
    I ask nothing.
    I judge nothing.
    I am free!
There is one Zorba, and that Zorba
    I must be!
Heaven waits for other men, but not for me!
I fear nothing! I hope for nothing!
    I am free!
Hey Boss, you wanna hear a story?
    Yes.
You do? Then I’ll tell you.
One morning in Salonika, I never will forget,
I was passing by the oldest man I think I ever met.
He was kneeling in an orchard,
When he turned and looked at me,
And he said, “Come watch me,
Sonny, as I plant this almond tree!”
I tell you, Boss, that fellow, he was over 95,
And I think he had a week,
Or maybe two to stay alive,
But he had to plant that almond tree,
And when I asked him why,
    He said,
“I live every minute as if I would never die.”
    Think of that, Boss!
He lived as if he would never die.
I live as if I would die any minute!
For that reason… just that reason,
    I am free!
I see somewhere, I go somewhere!
    I am free!
Think of that whenever you remember me!
    I fear nothing!
    I hope for nothing!
    I am free!
Life is what you do till the moment you die,
This is how the time goes by!

Thank you so much for sharing this clip! I saw the post-Broadway tour, with Quinn and Kedrova, when it made a stop at Milwaukee in March of 1986. It's wonderful when a video recording perfectly matches your memory of a live performance. I'll never forget the sight of Kedrova singing "Don't forget me..." right before she exited the stage. It's haunted me for almost 38 years.

I saw this on tour in 1983 in Cincinnati. Their chemistry was amazing. Quinn’s acting and stage presence blew me away. When Lila sang Happy birthday, there was not a dry eye in the house!!! She well deserved that Tony (and Oscar)! Thank you so much for posting this one!!

I saw this! It was in proctors theater, we had like 8th row seats, and I'll never forget it. It was great, i was about 8 years old and they were about 15 minutes in when i yelled out "he's a dirty old man!!!!!" About Anthony Quinn's lines. Everyone in the theater heard me, and so did Anthony Quinn. After that he adlibbed a lot of his lines, with a huge grin. Afterwards people came up to us and said i was just so cute saying he's a dirty old man. My mom told this story until the day she died. She was so tickled that he had heard what i said. So i have great memories tied to this play. And it was a good play

I just watched him in the John Candy/Maureen O’Hara comedy Only The Lonely. Of course - his character was Greek - but what a treasure he was! Thank you for posting this Spiderwoman - another of those legendary performances we’ll likely never see matched!
