  • Here we go with Sony's latest telephoto zoom lens. It's expensive, and only for APS-C cameras, but...is the price worth it? And how well does it work on full-frame?

    Thank you for the video. As you mentioned, I use this lens on my full-frame body (105-525mm) to reach the extra-long distance in a cost-effective fashion for just 625g. It is just perfect if you do not pixel-peep, and the output is not too bad.

    Considering that wild life photographers will often stop down their lenses a little, so the whole animal stay in focus, and considering the sharpness of this lens, it's pretty much a professional grade lens.

    • @snaphappyian

      I'm thinking the same, I have the A7R4 and would be more than happy with the 26pm files in APSC

    • @daygeckoarthawaii1360
      @daygeckoarthawaii1360 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kaleff75 this is not true, you can choose full frame mode. Sony doesn't force APS-C mode. As the video shows, you get a full frame image at 70mm and at 350mm you get a small amount of black edges but you can still crop to a much bigger square image than APS-C

    • @daygeckoarthawaii1360
      @daygeckoarthawaii1360 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kaleff75 you don't get any closer, it's just a crop of the full frame image, so you can get the same result by cropping in postprocessing, but with more flexibility for a wider view especially vertically. But I guess it does save space. 26 megapixels is fine, but most of us have 24MP with full frame so the reduction in pixels in crop mode is pretty bad! I have the 70-300 and it's heavy and fat. Your fingers literally don't have space at the grip on an A7iii. Plus it doesn't have a tripod mount which is a glaring oversight for a lens of that weight. I'm returning it and may get the 70-350

    • @anonymousl5150
      @anonymousl5150 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kaleff75 Just stop it with the ignorance. The 70 to 350 covers the full frame sensor easily up to 120 mm and can even realistically go up to 200 if you can accept some slight vignetting. That means if you want a wide end you can be in full frame mode for the 70 mm shots. Or you can use apsc crop mode to go all the way to 525 mm. That is an insane focal range being covered by one lens. It is sharper than the 70 to 300 assuming you get a good copy as there are sample variations with both. Better macro too because a .23 magnification ratio in apsc is like .35 in full frame terms. It is also 200 grams lighter than the 70 to 300 which is a significant difference.

    I switched from Canon gear and I was shooting on a 7D Mark-2 and a 6D Mark-2. As part of my lens lineup, I owned a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS ii lens and loved it. However, I didn't use it all that much because of the weight and size! Unless I was planning to shoot planes or wildlife, I would generally leave it home because it was too heavy to carry.
    When I switched to Sony, I decided not to purchase the 100-400mm or 200-600mm Sony lens because I was sure that I would not get enough use out of either lens.
    However, the 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS lens is reasonably light so I purchased one. My A6400 and this lens weighs less than half of what the 7D2 and 100-400mm lens weighed. Sure, I can only use this lens on a crop sensor camera but, I never used the Canon telephoto on my full frame Canon body. I always used it on the 7D2.
    The image quality and autofocus capability is very good to excellent and I am quite happy with this lens...

Because of that purchase, this Sony 70-350 will have to wait a bit though... ;-) Based on (mainly) your previous reviews I already bought the Samsung 12mm f2 (corrected: Samyang), the Sigma 16 ánd 56 mm for my little Sony A5100.

    Clarification for 3:16, focus breathing applies to zooming in at close focus too. Canon's 70-200 f/2.8s were famous for having a lot of focus breathing, but breathing that zooms in rather than out, so no one really cared when it came to stills.

      Yes the lens is heavy. Even though I can carry it a whole day without big problems. There are wildlife lenses that are much heavier. This lens is actually quite light for what it is.. The 100400GM may be better for hiking, but won't give you the same image qualitiy croped to 600mm..
      200600G has great image qualitiy in my opinion.

I can't tell you how useful a zoom is when attending soccer games, etc. I will be using the following lenses now when I travel: Sony 70-350, Sony 18-135, Sigma 30mm/f 1.4, and a Meike 12mm 1.7. These lenses provide a really nice range and are all APSC-portable with my Sony A6600. Before setting out I try to eliminate at least one of the lenses to lighten the load. Although the field of view of a 350mm APSC lens is equal to that of a 525mm full frame lens, it is totally not fair to say this is giving identical results to a 525mm F6.3 full frame lens (if such a thing existed). But it is very nice anyway and if you don't use the telephoto lens a lot, having this in the bag instead of a full frame 100-400mm at double the weight, can make sense.

Short distance was brilliant, sharp and contrast. But subjects further away than 50 meters turned up soft and really lacking in contrast, just some shady thing over the image just like the af wasnt really confident. Manual focus it often turned out better. I also found that over 300mm I had to stop down the lens to f11 to get ok results. Even comparing to my old Nikon 70-300 VR its results are poor. Probably ended up with a bad sample of the lens, so it went back to the store. Unfortunatly.
