Came to his channel for this song and fell in love with this entire album. I am so happy i found him and his music. Its so healing for me. I absolutely love him. His lyrics are so spot on. Loving it.
Heard it for the first time this morning. Never heard of him or his music before, but this just hit the right way. Been on repeat since this morning. Haven't listened to a song on repeat in who knows how many years. I'm a metal head so kinda natural I might not hear of him, but ironically his parents were in a Christian rock band back in the day. No coincidences. Can't wait to check out the rest of his stuff.

His live singing years ago to this song is just as good, or better. He’s amazing live on acoustic. Very rare to see a musician sound just as good live as in studio. Matt is one of them. I’m so grateful for this.

What stands out most i this emotionally raw and gritty song of beauty and pain, abandonment and reaching out - is that despite all the pain and destruction , there is always hope to living up to the way YOU want to be - not the way others want you to be - but what feels best to you , with less pain.
I would have never considered giving a song like this a second glance but the lyrics and meaning have resonated with me over the last few days as I've begun my recovery. The last moments of the video are especially meaningful: The only real hope he has to save himself, is in WANTING to be saved. Only you can pull yourself out of the cycle of addiction. You can't do it for anybody else, only yourself. This I've learned. In the process I've come to appreciate how great this song really is. Good luck to anybody else in recovery.

I didn’t think it was possible to hear so much pain from such a beautiful song. And it only manifests itself when you also are feeling pain.
“Cringe” is about being pushed away by the people you care about because of the lifestyle you live. I lived pretty rough for a while, and some of the people I really cared about would rather tell me how wrong I was rather than ask how I was doing. That’s the short version, anyway.

Thank you for such an amazing song. "Do I make you cringe?" It's so profound. I hear that and look back on my own life. I see all the things that I did or said, who I hurt and are mortified or angry about them. I can see them with clarity, and I grit my teeth. How could I have done that? Said that? I know that it's a sign I'm improving, but it's still hard to do.
the fact that you're looking back with regrets is a great step and means that you've changed and willing to be a better version of what you used to be, not many people would do that unfortunately

For all us folks who complain about modern music being crap compared to ours... I present you with this masterpiece of soulfull art.
He has convinced himself that others are committing villainous acts, and he is the hero standing up to them, when actually, he is running from the reality that he is the monster. Occasionally this truth catches up to him and he is consumed with guilt and self-hatred. The music video makes one wonder if they're truly the hero in their own narrative.

And that's the thing that I love about art; because no matter how you interpret it and no matter what way it may have been intended by the artist, you're never really wrong, regardless. Anyone can find a connection with any art form and with any individual piece, and no matter what, it's the right one.

As a former addict so much of Matt’s music speaks to me. Were the same age and we fell into addiction at around the same time in our lives. He gets it. He’s lived the life and if you haven’t been down that road there’s no way you could put those emotions and experiences into words and lyrics like he does. I relate to these songs so much that sometimes it brings tears to my eyes. I wasn’t a good person then and I can say that now I’m better than that person I used to be.

Saw him live as a stripped/acoustic performance and JESUS CHRIST HIS VOICE IS SO RAW AND LITERALLY PERFECT. Like not a note off. I was hooked before then but now I am absolutely a fan for life.

This song brings me back to my younger self, and how I in that time in my life if I had seen what I became in my early 20’s how much that would make me “cringe”. I became an alcoholic, and fucked up a bunch during that time. I’ve been sober now over a year, and view this remotely and that’s a powerful play through to watch. Blessings to all of you.

I Saw you in the water is the line. To me. .this line would go to the people i knew and felt losing them decades before they left. I could feel the intensity to each person. The loss and grief was different for each person. I've watched it play out for the past 25 years.
I've loved this song since the moment I heard it when it first came out. And each time it hits different. I definitely connect with it. I was sober 6 months last year then relapsed then made it to 6 this year but I relapsed a couple weeks ago. I keep trying man. I've been trying to get sober for years. I just relate to the song and wanted to express my appreciation toward it

I, personally, believe you can do it. I've seen it done by some of the most drugged out friends I've had and they're doing amazing to this day years later. You can do it and you'll succeed but it takes time and patience. 💚

Great song. I can relate to this song so strongly. I, too, was raised in a very Christian environment and as an adult it has effected me in many different ways. This song rings true when it comes to lifelong friends and family who turn their backs on you, based on your shitty decisions. Thank god true love doesn’t have those frivolous prerequisites.
I was brought up in a materialistic family that believes your value and worth is a dollar amount. I tried being what they wanted me to be, but I just wasn't happy. I was never going to be good enough because anytime I tried to crawl out of the hole I was in they were there to kick me back down. I had to finally let them all go in order to be happy. I only wish I had done so before they had a chance to mess up my daughters head the way they did mine.
I was raised Christian also and was taught to forgive... it took a long time to learn that forgiving doesn't mean you have to let someone keep being a part of your life. I might forgive them for what they did, but I won't let them do it again. It doesn't matter if what I am doing with my life doesn't make me hundreds of thousands of dollars - it makes me happy.
I own and operate a Senior Cat Sanctuary. I save cats that are over 10 years old from being euthanized simply because very few people want to adopt older cats. I built the cats their own heated and air conditioned house with fully fenced playyards out in the peacefulness of my country farm. They have everything a cat could want and I have everything I want. MY 9TH LIFE.

It just breaks my heart that some people don't take their responsibility for the life of another as serious as it should be. Be it a pet, a child, or any life... we have a responsibility to care for others especially when we willingly take on that responsibility. So many just push their responsibility to someone else when they decide their own life would be easier without another life to care and provide for.
When you see something needs to be done and you do nothing it makes one empty inside.
To love, and be loved in return... there is simply nothing better.
I work hard and I make good money. I choose to not spend what I've earned, nor my time, proving anything to anyone. I'm sure I make some people cringe, but it doesn't bother me because I am happy with who I am.

The planet has turned into something i barely recognize at this point, but takin care of animals is "cringe"... weird society we live in. had dogs and cats throughout childhood, then grew up-worked and all that so never had the time to adopt and take care of a pet so years of no furballs. covid times though did have one small positive, spending more time at home, which lead me to find three abandoned kittens on the road😁 .... 🤔😑 ok, never mind i just thought it through. Took only two years but.....i was USED!!! theyre a trap a TRAP i tell you. they come with friends that show up out of nowhere.. theres 11 runnin around my property now. send help. theyve used emotional blackmail and the "puss in boots" eyes to gain weight and take over!!! Cringe reminds me of how it feels to watch someone you love struggle in the "water" knowing it just might kill them. Then jumping in to save them only to realize they are pulling you under every time you offer to help.
Our daughter needed at least one of us to make it. Yes, you make me cringe, but I will always love you. And as Phil Collins points out, "the hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows. It's no stranger to you and me". I realize we are both hurting. I hope one day you can still forgive me for being the mother I needed to be. As I understand your pain, please understand mine.

I love this artist- I love everything about this song and I can't stop playing it, after reuniting with it, thanks to TH-cams random suggestions. I first heard this song years ago and loved it. But now, after 2020 and all this turmoil (for example, stranded out here in Southern CA from MT, lost my daughter for a little bit, etc etc) im on a whole new level of getting this song, thank you, you beautiful artists save lives and help the world keep going, period.❤

"she said my spirit doesn't move like it did before" i have known several people addicted to drugs and this is a common theme with something their loved ones say to them. They call them a shell of themselves, a shadow. I was listening to this song and that line really hit me as a person frustrated with a loved one who was addicted to drugs. I didn't really hear the line "you're just high" I thought she was just repeating him. I really like this song and how he expresses being turned away from people who preach about doing the opposite because people do this all the time to be perceived as good people but have no follow through. They pay lip service to saying they would help those in need but when the time comes they are anywhere else or watching from a distance and talking about you with their friends.
i agree, but in your opinion how a friend or s close person to the addict react to that addict action, i agree that they should be there for them to help instead of abandon them, but what if that addict isn't showing any signs that they're looking for help and they are just becoming a bad version of themselves what should the friend do in this case
@@GGG_3 I mean a person has to help themselves in the end but there are exceptions to that rule. You can try to talk to them and tell them you care and that you're worried about them but in the end you can't force someone to get help. There is the chance that what is preventing them from getting help is a mental health disorder or illness though so that should be considered. If they're a danger to themselves or others you can call emergency but thats only if it's an emergency. Otherwise I recommend joining alanon so you can deal with how you are struggling with your loved one handling substance abuse issues and the lack of control you have over that. That's what I did.

My ex wife called me in the middle of the night crying begging me to pick her and our kids up because she was terrified for her life for our kids. I got her and my kids in my car and all packed up warm grabbing everything they could as fast as they could. I put Pandora on and played the station Flora Cash cause it's her favorite. This song came on and she couldn't stop crying cause she's safe now and it was why she needed to hear. Matt you helped my ex wife and she is so great full. Thank you
growing up as a "foster child" i had biological family in my life , grandfather was the 100% top best and nobody else really care only pretended to care, growing up i had a different life always fighting, always getting incouraged by my freinds to fight and just cause trouble because they would get a rise out of me getting in trouble it turns out this song means alot to me and really show us there are very few people who do care about you , how your wellbeing is, most of the people are judgemental and they care about there selves , i grew up an a very trouble individual its just how it is , how i was looked at my entire life by many people just keeps us stronger to watch our selves start to understand what is what , who is actually who . i had many freinds growing up , im 31 now. i have 2kids a wife a dog and a really small handful of freinds id actually call freinds in a very small town .
