Juicy question: Are there any city foods that you miss in the village? Would be interesting to know the way your eating habits have changed with the different availability and type of food between city and rural. Is one healthier? Are there any American dishes that you cook for that home taste of Appalachia?

The problem in rural China is: 1. No job; 2. There is almost no public infrastructure such as healthcare and education. Otherwise, not many people would leave their hometowns for the city

There's an interesting renaissance of rural towns in the Canadian prairies. With the rise of remote work people are finding affordable homes in towns which have been languishing for half a century. I don't see any bullet trains coming down the line though my government did just earmark $70 billion for NATO bullets. 😞

If I were younger, much younger than I am (82), I would move to China for a while, learning Mandarin and try to find out whether China could be the country where to live permanently or even for the rest of my life! Your and other China-minded people’s videos have attracted my attention, pondering on what makes China more than an exotic option for spending one’s life!
    Cheers

I met an American man. He is an 86-year-old blind individual from MIT. He is happy in Asia. The East culture in many cases is opposite to the West. There is no need to worry, as compassion and kindness have the power to heal any situation. In fact, being a foreigner, you get more attention. Keep your mind open, and do not compare to the West style. Just let it be.

I grew up on a farm in China. The first such farm in China (赵光农场) until I was 16 when I came to the US for school in 1982. Only a few major roads were paved with sands, and the rest are all muddy roads. You can imagine what happens when it rains. I have not been back since my family moved to another farm (柳河农场) the same year I left and then to Harbin. From the pictures I have seen, my rural hometown has changed significantly. I went to HangZhou a few times around year 2000 and had 农家饭 a couple of times near Hangzhou. I have thought about spending a couple of months in the villages near Hangzhou with the local families. If my health holds up after I retire, I may actually do it. I always lived in small towns in the US since 1982 with the exception of San Jose, CA for 2 years. I really enjoy watching your videos on living in rural areas in China.

Love your videos on rural living in China! ❤ (devising a strategy to move out of Shanghai ourselves). Last weekend we visited this ecovillage called Sunshine Village near Tonglu, bit south of Hangzhou. It was so beautiful and inspiring! The people there focused on environmental friendly practices, community life, working together with older villagers and learning their skills. Also natural building, soap made from tea, colouring fabric with plants, so many cool things. Seems like a place you might also enjoy visiting! Their name is 三生谷生态书院 on weixin. Keep up the great work you're doing!

This is the first time I've seen you cook in your videos, I had to make sure that I didn't blink, or I would've missed it. 😂😂🤣🤣 Kat, can you do an episode of baking cookies or cakes for the grandmas in the village and having tea and cookies with them...that could be fun. If you have a dinner party what would be your go-to dishes? Would it be Chinese or American?

I missed being growing up in the village of rural China in the 1980s. People never lock their door, small kids can venture out to the fields and ponds to catch fish, or the back mountains to pick wild berry. Crime is something never heard of because every one knows each other WELL....Most of all, people talk to each other and care for each other. I used to ride bike venture out few hours away from where I live at very early age 7....My kids growing up in America not possible to do that... and while they have all the modern convenience and gadgets but their childhood is not even 1/10 as fun as mine.

We would move out to a village if a) we could buy something there and b) we stayed close enough for hospitals. It's an age thing you know. Nice to see you so happy there.

I have visited and lived with my in-laws in rural China and can attest to most of the positive things you have said and can't wait to hear about what are the negative ones and see if they are in common to what have been my experiences, one of the biggest is there are lots of mosquitoes and I get bitten all over every time I go there. Next will be next month. Also, not so great is without a car or some other personal form of transportation, getting to urban areas for shopping and other conveniences on the local run-down buses which you have to wait a long time for sometimes is not so fun.

I am a Chinese descendant myself (living in SE Asia). It is true that the greeting in the Chinese community when we meet each other is almost always "Have you eaten?" I think this is appropriate because the Chinese think that our stomachs are our emperors. Yes, they are. You simply can't do any work when you are hungry. This is being practical.
On the other hand, when I lived for some time in Australia and the United States, the people there greeted me with "How's the weather?" Bull's eye again, because if it is raining, we can't do anything outdoor.

Although I'm from Shanghai my wife is from rural Anhui Xuanchen County in a tea growing community also near the birthplace of paper, which is still handmade from mulberry bark. They also have a bamboo forrest nearby (doesn't everyone?). So we do spend a lot of time in the countryside.

I don't know why, but I kind of cry whenever I see her videos. I feel like giving her a hug and asking, "is everything okay?" I would feel so lonely living alone with people from such a different culture, age, and spoken language. As long as she is happy and creating content that she enjoys what she is doing...

Absolutely lovely Katherine. Have you found that many urbanites are moving (back?) to rural areas in recent years ? I imagine rural-urban family connections are stronger than in the west due to the rapid pace of development in the last 40 years.
