Why would you ever give them money? If you want to help them, use that money to hire someone to come in and clean the home out, paint and repair what needs to be repaired and buy them some new furniture. Otherwise the money disappears down a rat hole never to be seen again.

I’m from WV and started to see right through these people once all the random family members started showing up. Because the same thing happened to me and mine. I got out and made something of myself and that’s when I had my dope fiend cousins (that I hadn’t heard from in years) asking for “help”. It’s like feeding a stray cat, you do it once they’ll keep coming back. Betty is just as guilty as BJ. She knows right from wrong. Good on ya for putting them on blast Mark.
I am so shocked by this whole situation. I would have never ever thought this would happen. So many people are hurting because of all of BJ's deceit and lies. I feel so sorry for Ray, Timmy and Lorraine. And also for Mark and the contributors. He tried so hard to help this family and make their lives better. And $100k later they are still living the same. I was one of the donors. They can keep the money. If it means Ray, Timmy, and Lorraine got a meal, it was worth it. The bad and good you put out into the world will come full circle eventually. I will never regret trying to help someone, but once it’s proven they are lying, I’m done. I’m sure most of the other donors feel the same. I’m just shocked about all of this.

Mark should have known better. He had to know he was going down a rabbit hole? I think he knew exactly what was going on, and he simply followed through on the exercise to prove another point? If he had simply called the so-called funeral home to tell them that he would pay associated fees for the funeral, then this abominable creature who calls herself his daughter would not have been able to pull off the scam on the one person in the world who took an interest in their family and has bettered their lives exponentially. I have met Mark Laita’s sister and kinder person and a the Laita’s are honorable people. One of the reasons Mark began this channel was because he wanted to try to help people in a small way, and in the effort of helping marginalized people, he wanted to shine a light on the circumstances that some people find themselves. It was a way to help people avoid making similar mistakes. Shame on this woman for doing this!

Don't get me wrong, i think it's great mark helps them, unlike Tyler. But these people have been surviving without Mark's help long before he came into their lives. It gets tricky when drugs are involved. Addiction is a very self serving illness. People are willing to traffic their own children to avoid getting sick and withdrawing. Then sobering up and facing the damage that affects so many people. It’s a vicious cycle. I hope they get well.

As one of the donors, I believed I was giving to provide this family with a decent home. I don’t blame you Mark but I’m sad that the money wasn’t set up in a trust with a local lawyer in charge of administering funds. The money should never go directly to Betty or anyone else in this family. They are simply not capable of making good decisions and never will be. Sad.

I’m sorry to say but these ppl can’t even take care of themselves I don’t know how well they’re taking care of their animals...yes they are feeding them but I don’t sense any love...an animal needs more than food and water to survive. I just feel so awful they’re stuck living with this family and they seem to wander around aimlessly around the property....very sad indeed

Ill always help people, but I have had to set firm boundaries, because the majority of people who Ive helped/help are homeless and have been and probably always will be, because they show you, rather fast, why. They have almost certainly burned every bridge, thoroughly. It sucks and I still feel bad for them, but I have to make sure my home and family are safe before anything and I was, at one point, really putting myself out there, inviting people in my home, and unfortunately, Ive been screwed over, more often than not. Many families with addicts go through the same ordeal. Where people could easily point fingers and Betty and Larry I have sympathy for them as I know first hand how it is with a family member you love is addicted and the constant battle of saying no and caving in to the addicts demand for money to buy drugs especially with opioids and the sickness. This Whitaker’s story would make a great case study on charity. Money cannot solve problems related to lack of intelligence and more importantly addiction/mental illness. Those who believe giving money to the homeless will solve their problems should watch this series. I would argue the money and notoriety given to the Whitakers only complicated their lives and certainly did not improve their situation. The community already looked out for the family and they would have been just fine.
What helps is healthcare for all and equal education for all children. What helps is sex education. What helps is a living wage. West viginia is failing at every one of those things.
