Mark: I've watched your channel for several years now, including your interviews with others, not just the Whitakers. I don't recall if I've ever left a comment, but despite my wrist being in a cast that makes it difficult to type, I felt the need to say the following: I was born in Southern West Virginia and reared there until the age of 17, when I left for college. I did not live in a situation even remotely close to the Whitakers, but I had classmates and friends who did. After moving to Nashville and Gatlinburg, TN, finishing nursing school, and finally settling in North Carolina, I had grown accustomed to not seeing such squalor and destitution as exists in Southern W.Va. When I went back to visit my Granny and Papaw over the years and would pass many homes and living conditions similar to the Whitakers along the way, I seriously had what was very similar to culture shock. Those who see this type of destitution every day, even if it's something far removed from their lifestyle in West Virginia (whether they were raised there and/or currently living there), do not realize just how repressed and depressed they are. If some of the many wonderful families really knew what was simply normal in other areas, they wouldn't be able to fathom just how far down the poverty line they really fall. I saw a comment below that said something akin to if the Whitakers got new everything, the house would look as bad as it does now in no time. On thinking about it, I think the comment was more correct than not; however, if someone who knew and understood the deep Appalachian way of life, who could teach the Whitakers, for lack of a better word, and guide them in better hygiene, how to, perhaps, make a chore chart so that those who are able can contribute to the home and yard maintenance, I believe the Whitakers could have life more assimilated to what every-day life looks like for country folk. I believe that Betty, as well as everyone else, would be shocked by how wonderful it feels to simply get to sleep in a clean bed with clean linens, even if they have trouble articulating it. I watched an episode once where you talked to them and came to the understanding that Ray, Loreen {sp?}, and the others whose speech was unintelligible DID understand what was said to them. Having something as elementary as a chore chart would be a rewarding system, as well, so that they know they contributed to the better state of the home. There are so many lovely people in West Virginia. My grandparents were reared in Wayne County, W.Va. and lived in Logan, West Virginia most of their lives. They were not well educated, as they were from an era that experienced the Depression, but everything they had was immaculate, and they raised 2 children, my mom being one of the 2, who are pillars of their community. When my grandparents died, they left a nice inheritance for their children, a paid-off home, and a car, truck, and boat that were paid off, as well. My grandpa was a coal miner, my uncle was an accountant for coal mines, and my Granny was a homemaker. They were country people and I thought the absolute world of them. So being poor, as they were as they were coming of age, doesn't have to be a generational problem. I do think they just need guidance on how to be different. That's just an opinion, and I don't know every intricacy regarding the Whitakers, of course, but it was just a thought. The family members who are drug users also need to be out of their lives. I understand what a huge conundrum that can be, as I went through it with one of my sons, successfully thank God, but I don't think the Whitakers have the emotional support or wherewithal to force someone to change their life, as well as their falling prey to a younger generation who manipulate them and, yes, probably frighten them if threats were involved. Again, just thinking aloud. Thank you for what you've done for all of your participants. You have a beautiful soul and are someone who can look past the concrete walls of addiction, molestation, deeply embedded street life, etc., things most people would never see in their lifetimes. Because of your channel, people can learn about different cultures and ways of life, as well as foster compassion and become others with malleable hearts while doing so. I agree, wholeheartedly with everything you said. My parents were raised in Varney WVa up Varney holler. My Pawpaw was a coal minor and my mom was the oldest of 10 kids. But they were the cleanest people I have ever known and it was taught and passed down to everyone in our family. I love to visit, but yes, you’re gonna drive past squalor and poor living conditions as well as the decent and nice homes/Trailors when driving through Matewan, Delbarton, Varney, Logan ect, ect… but either Larry or Betty said in one of the videos that their mommy and daddy‘s house was the same way. They grew up in it and were never taught any different so that’s the way they continued to live. It has to be taught and passed down. They are way too old now, and their bodies are not as capable anymore to clean up after that many people.

I used to travel and sing with a gospel group, as did my grandparents and my mother. I know people from each of the towns you mentioned, as well, and have sung in Matewan several times too. It's too bad that the Whitakers don't have one single person out of the group who could/would help them get things straightened up so they could live better lives. If I woke up to that every day, I dare say I'd even want to. It seems that once someone learns they get a bit of money, family or not, the plot thickens (and sickens). I hope something good comes of everything Mark has done for them. As we both agree about cleanliness and, if nothing else, keeping things straight, being something one learns through generations, I hope something will register (or be demonstrated to them by visiting their home) to them, if capable. I grew up in poverty and something my mother always said to me was “when you lend someone money, consider it a gift. There’s a good chance you aren’t getting it back and even more that they’ll use it for something else, so just do it for the sake of doing a good thing”. People in the comments are telling Mark not to give them money anymore, asking how he’s so calm knowing thousands of dollars were spent on drugs, this and that. But he reminds me of my mom and I believe he has heart of gold. Staying calm and being able to still talk with them also shows Mark’s maturity because remember, all of the people in this situation are disabled to some degree. Even BJ has stuff going on. Mark is treating them with respect by confronting the situation, but not outwardly being angry or aggressive. I personally think he and his team (partner? whoever else was with him) handled this fantastically.

If he had simply called the so-called funeral home to tell them that he would pay associated fees for the funeral, then this abominable creature who calls herself his daughter would not have been able to pull off the scam on the one person in the world who took an interest in their family and has bettered their lives exponentially. I have met Mark Laita’s sister and kinder person and a the Laita’s are honorable people. One of the reasons Mark began this channel was because he wanted to try to help people in a small way, and in the effort of helping marginalized people, he wanted to shine a light on the circumstances that some people find themselves. It was a way to help people avoid making similar mistakes. Shame on this woman for doing this!
As one of the donors, I believed I was giving to provide this family with a decent home. I don’t blame you Mark but I’m sad that the money wasn’t set up in a trust with a local lawyer in charge of administering funds. The money should never go directly to Betty or anyone else in this family. They are simply not capable of making good decisions and never will be. Sad.
People have their own life to, no one has time to meet with lawyers n go thru the whole process of setting up trust funds and rules on how the money should be distributed. Absolutely not! I knew that nothing good would come from it. After the first few times of them asking for it without making the repairs to the home as they said they would, I would have paid the contractors directly or found an executor to see over the funds. Especially when Betty is asking him for $5000 every couple of weeks. Mark helped them a lot. More than anyone would have.
Don't get me wrong, i think it's great mark helps them, unlike Tyler. But these people have been surviving without Mark's help long before he came into their lives. Cash in hand is not what these people need, systemic change is what they need. And any monetary help should be in the form of goods and services.

As someone who donated, it hurts my heart that BJ lied and took advantage of our kindness. Scammers are everywhere. If any more money is raised, it should be set up in a trust with an attorney who can distribute funds as needed for essentials. It's so sad that she took money from such a kind person. Did Mark know that Larry wasn't dead though? Mark asked Betty and Betty said Larry had died. And Betty is Larry's sister, so I guess I would not believe that someone's SISTER would lie or not know that they died. Example, if my brother told me he found out that my sister had died and I contacted my mom and my mom ALSO confirmed that my sister had died. Then I would have no real reason not to believe that my sister had died. Even though my mom is shady and lies about things sometimes, you would have to be pretty evil to LIE about someone dying.

I understand what you are going through, I have helped so many people with drug issues, it’s hard 😢one daughter died from an OD in 2023 and another daughter is in jail because of drugs, it just goes on and on I carried her to the methadone clinic daily, at this point I have broken communication with her, because I’m just feeling very used. I could tell you stories that would blow your mind. Thank you for sharing the story about the family in WV.

It gets tricky when drugs are involved. Addiction is a very self serving illness. People are willing to traffic their own children to avoid getting sick and withdrawing. Then sobering up and facing the damage that affects so many people. It’s a vicious cycle. I hope they get well.

Seriously! Even 10K would change my life. It would get me a working car. I can't really blame the Whittackers so much, though. Not enough cognitive ability there to really hold them accountable. Many families with addicts go through the same ordeal. God Larry telling us about his wife was the most beautiful heartbreaking clip. You can see the pain he carries from not only losing the woman he's in love with, but also from seeing the consequences of her death in his daughter's addiction/behavior. The advice he was giving her is wise- just suffer through it. He didn't say that it is easy, he admitted how difficult it is to actually get through something painful. But then it ends up being okay. My heart goes out to Larry cause I don't think BJ will actually get the help.
Larry was in on it too. It’s obvious the way he reacted when he got out of the truck and Mark said “is that the way to dress for your funeral “. Larry says calmly “I don’t know nothin about that”. A normal response from someone not knowing anything would be like what the hell are you even talking about and being surprised and not understanding the question. Larry’s been in on it. Ill always help people, but I have had to set firm boundaries, because the majority of people who Ive helped/help are homeless and have been and probably always will be, because they show you, rather fast, why. They have almost certainly burned every bridge, thoroughly. It sucks and I still feel bad for them, but I have to make sure my home and family are safe before anything and I was, at one point, really putting myself out there, inviting people in my home, and unfortunately, Ive been screwed over, more often than not. Told me to go get some powdered donuts. Wow it took me like 9 hours to walk A1A all the way to my best friend's house. Midway, this old black man saw me staring at the water at the gas station. I was a mess crying all day. He bought me a gallon of water and a sub sandwich and some chips and gave me 20 bucks. And told me, angels are watching out for me. God is good. I thanked him and I got to my friend's house, so beat so tired I fell asleep outside. Everyone missed me until her mother found me at 1:30 in the morning. I carried my mother on My apron strings until I was 27. Until I cut them. She was Dead 3 years later. The synthetic drugs that we have flooding our country. Mark: I've watched your channel for several years now, including your interviews with others, not just the Whitakers. I don't recall if I've ever left a comment, but despite my wrist being in a cast that makes it difficult to type, I felt the need to say the following:
I was born in Southern West Virginia and reared there until the age of 17, when I left for college. I did not live in a situation even remotely close to the Whitakers, but I had classmates and friends who did. After moving to Nashville and Gatlinburg, TN, finishing nursing school, and finally settling in North Carolina, I had grown accustomed to not seeing such squalor and destitution as exists in Southern W.Va. When I went back to visit my Granny and Papaw over the years and would pass many homes and living conditions similar to the Whitakers along the way, I seriously had what was very similar to culture shock. Those who see this type of destitution every day, even if it's something far removed from their lifestyle in West Virginia (whether they were raised there and/or currently living there), do not realize just how repressed and depressed they are. If some of the many wonderful families really knew what was simply normal in other areas, they wouldn't be able to fathom just how far down the poverty line they really fall.
I saw a comment below that said something akin to if the Whitakers got new everything, the house would look as bad as it does now in no time. On thinking about it, I think the comment was more correct than not; however, if someone who knew and understood the deep Appalachian way of life, who could teach the Whitakers, for lack of a better word, and guide them in better hygiene, how to, perhaps, make a chore chart so that those who are able can contribute to the home and yard maintenance, I believe the Whitakers could have life more assimilated to what every-day life looks like for country folk. I believe that Betty, as well as everyone else, would be shocked by how wonderful it feels to simply get to sleep in a clean bed with clean linens, even if they have trouble articulating it. I watched an episode once where you talked to them and came to the understanding that Ray, Loreen {sp?}, and the others whose speech was unintelligible DID understand what was said to them. Having something as elementary as a chore chart would be a rewarding system, as well, so that they know they contributed to the better state of the home.
There are so many lovely people in West Virginia. My grandparents were reared in Wayne County, W.Va. and lived in Logan, West Virginia most of their lives. They were not well educated, as they were from an era that experienced the Depression, but everything they had was immaculate, and they raised 2 children, my mom being one of the 2, who are pillars of their community. When my grandparents died, they left a nice inheritance for their children, a paid-off home, and a car, truck, and boat that were paid off, as well. My grandpa was a coal miner, my uncle was an accountant for coal mines, and my Granny was a homemaker. They were country people and I thought the absolute world of them. So being poor, as they were as they were coming of age, doesn't have to be a generational problem. I do think they just need guidance on how to be different. That's just an opinion, and I don't know every intricacy regarding the Whitakers, of course, but it was just a thought. The family members who are drug users also need to be out of their lives. I understand what a huge conundrum that can be, as I went through it with one of my sons, successfully thank God, but I don't think the Whitakers have the emotional support or wherewithal to force someone to change their life, as well as their falling prey to a younger generation who manipulate them and, yes, probably frighten them if threats were involved. Again, just thinking aloud.
Thank you for what you've done for all of your participants. You have a beautiful soul and are someone who can look past the concrete walls of addiction, molestation, deeply embedded street life, etc., things most people would never see in their lifetimes. Because of your channel, people can learn about different cultures and ways of life, as well as foster compassion and become others with malleable hearts while doing so.

I agree, wholeheartedly with everything you said. My parents were raised in Varney WVa up Varney holler. My Pawpaw was a coal minor and my mom was the oldest of 10 kids. But they were the cleanest people I have ever known and it was taught and passed down to everyone in our family. I love to visit, but yes, you’re gonna drive past squalor and poor living conditions as well as the decent and nice homes/Trailors when driving through Matewan, Delbarton, Varney, Logan ect, ect… but either Larry or Betty said in one of the videos that their mommy and daddy‘s house was the same way. They grew up in it and were never taught any different so that’s the way they continued to live. It has to be taught and passed down. They are way too old now, and their bodies are not as capable anymore to clean up after that many people.

I used to travel and sing with a gospel group, as did my grandparents and my mother. I know people from each of the towns you mentioned, as well, and have sung in Matewan several times too.
It's too bad that the Whitakers don't have one single person out of the group who could/would help them get things straightened up so they could live better lives. If I woke up to that every day, I dare say I'd even want to. It seems that once someone learns they get a bit of money, family or not, the plot thickens (and sickens).
I hope something good comes of everything Mark has done for them. As we both agree about cleanliness and, if nothing else, keeping things straight, being something one learns through generations, I hope something will register (or be demonstrated to them by visiting their home) to them, if capable.

I grew up in poverty and something my mother always said to me was “when you lend someone money, consider it a gift. There’s a good chance you aren’t getting it back and even more that they’ll use it for something else, so just do it for the sake of doing a good thing”. People in the comments are telling Mark not to give them money anymore, asking how he’s so calm knowing thousands of dollars were spent on drugs, this and that. But he reminds me of my mom and I believe he has heart of gold. Staying calm and being able to still talk with them also shows Mark’s maturity because remember, all of the people in this situation are disabled to some degree. Even BJ has stuff going on. Mark is treating them with respect by confronting the situation, but not outwardly being angry or aggressive. I personally think he and his team (partner? whoever else was with him) handled this fantastically.

Absolutely not! I knew that nothing good would come from it. After the first few times of them asking for it without making the repairs to the home as they said they would, I would have paid the contractors directly or found an executor to see over the funds. God Larry telling us about his wife was the most beautiful heartbreaking clip. You can see the pain he carries from not only losing the woman he's in love with, but also from seeing the consequences of her death in his daughter's addiction/behavior. The advice he was giving her is wise- just suffer through it. He didn't say that it is easy, he admitted how difficult it is to actually get through something painful. But then it ends up being okay. My heart goes out to Larry cause I don't think BJ will actually get the help.

He didn’t even live across the road from them until Mark starting coming around and helping the others. I didn’t trust him or the rest of his clan when the first started showing up. Kevin is the most trustworthy person in the family other than Timmy, Loraine and Ray who are just kind souls who are clearly clueless about money and drama

I wouldn’t be surprised if he hasn’t gotten a huge cut and has thousands of dollars buried out there somewhere. There’s no way they’ve burned up 150,000 dollars in just drugs in that short amount of time. Larry has a stash I bet.
Yep Larry knew. He acted defensively saying “I don’t know anything about that” when Mark first asked him about the funeral. That is not what a person says, if he truly didn’t know anything he would have confused and amused by the funeral comment

Ill always help people, but I have had to set firm boundaries, because the majority of people who Ive helped/help are homeless and have been and probably always will be, because they show you, rather fast, why. They have almost certainly burned every bridge, thoroughly. It sucks and I still feel bad for them, but I have to make sure my home and family are safe before anything and I was, at one point, really putting myself out there, inviting people in my home, and unfortunately, Ive been screwed over, more often than not. I got my stuff together and was about to walk. My mother getting angry. Because she knew she knew I was walking away. Getting angry with me. She told me I wasn't allowed to leave. I said you're not allowed to hold me home. This place smells like crack you have paraphernalia everywhere. Let go of me now. She smacked me across my face. Gave me $2 food stamps. Just a dollar each. Told me to go get some powdered donuts. Wow it took me like 9 hours to walk A1A all the way to my best friend's house. Midway, this old black man saw me staring at the water at the gas station. I was a mess crying all day. He bought me a gallon of water and a sub sandwich and some chips and gave me 20 bucks. And told me, angels are watching out for me. God is good. I thanked him and I got to my friend's house, so beat so tired I fell asleep outside. Everyone missed me until her mother found me at 1:30 in the morning. I carried my mother on My apron strings until I was 27. Until I cut them. She was Dead 3 years later. The synthetic drugs that we have flooding our country. The very fact that making something illegal makes a black market.I can't stand it. The elite zone the illegal and legal market. And they have protection laws for them but everyone else falls hard.

Wow. I'm a struggling disabled truckdriver who's 62 & even 5k would at least buy me a cheap car so I could pick up or take my granddaughter to school or go to my Drs appointments. I either walk or pay for a ride & to see these folks breeze through over $150k is just mind blowing!

Yeah, I’m a single mom and that money would change me and my daughters life. I don’t drink or do drugs. All I do is work and try to better our lives but my whole paycheck goes to bills and I’m never able to save any money. This really frustrates me.
