We were in the train car that it hit. As I recall, the brakes gave out and were not working on the car, that's why it did not stop or slow down. The old man in it was not hurt. It was very exciting tho, lots of fire trucks and things came. (can you tell I had small kids)

Reminds me of an incident that happened on the Southern Pacific some years ago (well into the time it was SP) .. on the Chandler branch, the Magma turn local was pulling some cars from Capitol Castings at about 2 in the morning. A car just "wham" right into the side of the 6th car back from the locomotive. When asked, the driver said "I never saw a train on this rail in the 20 years I've been here" . conductor replied "You didn't see it tonight, either".

Did Sheriff Taylor show up and say, "Now Pervis, you know you shouldn't be drinking the shiner, before taking out your grandmother's Oldsmobile?"

@1999kenwortht300 I know this is an old post, but the thing is that this is in Bonsal, NC. There's nothing in Bonsal, except this nonprofit railway club and museum. I'm sure the person who hit the train was local, because, if you're not, there's no reason to be there except the railway excursion, which only runs on certain days. There's no way you could drive by on a day when the train is running and not notice unless you were drunk, asleep or otherwise impaired.

Not all of us "older drivers" are idiots or asleep at the wheel. We pay property taxes too, so we much work to support your kids' educations. We're becoming a majority of the tax revenue, since most of us are the homeowners and landlords and we pay the taxes. If we can't drive, we can't work and can't pay our taxes and your kids will have to buy private educations.

Looks like the driver may have passed out for some reason. I wish there was more video to show what happened next.
As for gates on this crossing, they would not have helped. A crossing gate is made of wood; it's basically a long 2X4. Some are metal, but still don't have much more strength than their wooden cousins.
The man was there to turn the signal on and off. This was not an automatic signal.
Hope the driver was okay and the car could be repaired.
