A car just "wham" right into the side of the 6th car back from the locomotive. @1999kenwortht300 I know this is an old post, but the thing is that this is in Bonsal, NC. There's nothing in Bonsal, except this nonprofit railway club and museum. I'm sure the person who hit the train was local, because, if you're not, there's no reason to be there except the railway excursion, which only runs on certain days. There's no way you could drive by on a day when the train is running and not notice unless you were drunk, asleep or otherwise impaired.
My driving instructor told us that. He said the people that got hit, driving at night didn't see the lights of the train so they keep driving, causing them to get hit
Maybe stroke, anneurism, heart attack? At any rate, maybe the driver was unconscious, which explains also why he was driving on the wrong side of the road.

Couple moths ago one truck driver crashed into a house. The house was destroyed. It ends up he had short dizziness or some kind of black out. Just couple second, but it was enough for damage on the house. He basically parked truck in sleeping room. In all this good was fact that no one was in it.
Looks like the driver may have passed out for some reason. I wish there was more video to show what happened next. As for gates on this crossing, they would not have helped. A crossing gate is made of wood; it's basically a long 2X4. Some are metal, but still don't have much more strength than their wooden cousins. The man was there to turn the signal on and off. This was not an automatic signal. Hope the driver was okay and the car could be repaired.
