Agreed, my take is plus 44 was more popular with blink fans, I feel more blink fans chose Mark and Travis's side early in the divorce. But generally AVA was more popular (and obviously became more popular) because it was able to take some of blink community as well as reaching a different audience who might've never enjoyed blink's music.
mark said on his website that he was playing blink-182 songs so that the songs wouldn't rot and be abandonded, he thought it was stupid of tom to play songs from a band that he abandoned.
whenever anyone has asked mark a question relating to ava he always says the same thing...no competition, we do our own thing etc etc. he doesnt wanna offend the AvA fans who like +44 too and look like a jerk. but i think there is actually some competition but nobody wants to admit it

Tom wasn't a jerk, he left because he didn't wanna be so famous so fast, because he had a wife and a child, he felt the need to be a father to his kid, and being as famous as they all were would obstruct his goal of being a great father.

I may be a bit late, however no. Tom Delonge, Mark Hoppus, and Scott Raynor all formed blink-182 together, the band was formed in '92. Scott was kicked out and Travis joined, Tom was a founding member alongside Mark, Tom never "came into the picture" he co-founded the picture.
