Thank you so much for showing the photograph of what remained of the original painting, as I have long found Herzfeld's speculative reconstruction somewhat crude and unsatisfactory. The original image, fragmentary though it is, and transmitted through a black-and-white photograph, seems more beautiful and graceful. I wonder if the original work still survives, and if so, whether in situ (probably unlikely) or a museum?
Samarra was noted for its monumental architecture. The Great Mosque there, built by the caliph al-Mutawakkil (reigned 847-861), was at the time of its construction the largest mosque in the world, and though in ruins today, its massive minaret still awes and attracts visitors.
