Monsieur Bernheim with the fabulous Ms. Oropesa singing this duet was one of the best performances I have heard at the Met. Their voices blended so beautifully. Please cast them together in more productions, preferably some rarely performed French opera.

It makes me sad that the issues come from the basic fundamentals here, and he’s still singing at a place like the met. It feels like america has the mentality of everyone always being a work in progress, but that can’t be right. Solid, well trained singers should be released onto the stage.
I keep rewatching to give him another chance, and I just can’t.

It's not horrible, it's just not the caliber of singing that you might expect from the Met, if you have heard productions in the 90's. Going back and listening to some of the great tenors of the past, I would just be embarassed for this guy. I find the quality of the singing at the Met to be incredibly inconsistent- over the past years I have seen productions that really hit the mark and others less so. I often find that singers can run hot and cold in the same cast. There was a Giovanni production from a few years back that just blew me away, the cast had Vargas as one of the tenors and all the ladies were incredible. Then there was the Traviata a few back with Dessay, should've been called La Travestia. So much air was going past her cords that I thought I was listening to it during a flight with the airplane's windows open. I was listening to it with one of the pianists from Hamburg State Opera and it was all he could do not to laugh. I suspect there are other criteria for casting other than singing. But, I think anybody that really knows what great singing is has had these same complaints about the house for decades now. The old guard is long gone and I think the new direction belongs more in the ticket clerk capacity. Music, vocal technique, you either really get it intuitively, or you just don't. There's a lot of other stuff out there to listen to.

@acadela can you imagine my feelings when I've listened to him in person if you're so disgusted listening to him via web?! And now this weak tenor is at the Met. How did he manage it? Because of good agents and promotion. It has nothing to do with true Opera art and it's really sad.

This chap is good.. but not yet polished. He is in and out of his legato line, inconsistent technique, sloppy vowels, interwoven with unsupported phonation. Why is it that there are so many that simply cannot recognize this and continue to label these hog callers as our next Caruso or Pavarotti? In my opinion.... The Met appears to be lowering the bar in many areas to appeal to the uneducated bottom feeders in an effort to increase sales among the ignorant of the next generation. They need to LEAD OUT in setting a demanding High Bar in Artistry and Professionalism.

    • @acadela3506

@@markharris2752 to me it seems like an issue of a general uneducated audience, not just the "next generation" of listeners. I think many young people interested in opera actually care to do their research.

Gosh, Bernheim has reached the Met. Interesting combination of throaty and nasality. It seems he sings holding his nose. I'm wondering how many cracks he will do this time. Usually he makes a lot. BTW Met hasn't invited Pati yet. That will be really funny. Tragedy turning comedy. And Feola will sing Gilda in all revivals I believe?

@@nadinesierra miss Sierra I don't know whether it's your own account and I'm speaking with you directly. As an opera goer I've listened to Mr. Bernheim's Duca twice in person in different production trying to figure out the secret of his ''acclaim''. Plus several times in other roles. So I just share my own experience here. And I'm very disappointed that Met hires such singers while there are a lot of good tenors who deserve to sing on this stage. It' a matter of good marketing and promotion not art then because there is a cognitive dissonance with the famous Met slogan ''we have only the best singers in the world''. My comments are filled with sincere concern about the cultural prosperity of Opera Art. I do understand your massage but you could also understand mine. Art is not some abstract form. It's an object of perception and hence ranking, judging. The criterias of this judging depend on the person's experience and knowledge. Is it not my right then? The simple ability to produce some sounds is not enough. Thank you for your sweet wishes, wish you also all the best. I'm happy person, I'm just don't like any form of hypocrisy. Happiness and Harmonie.

@@operafairy I understand your concerns and wishes for the art form you love to always set itself to the highest level/still cater to that joy and satisfaction your favorite artists have given to your life. Boy, do I get that. I’m also an opera lover :) But consider one thing, if you don’t mind my writing to you: a lover of opera is also one who has compassion for singers. As an example, this is Bernheim’s debut at the Met- it was a 10:30am dress rehearsal and these kinds of events are always daunting (and can be rather annoyingly early) to singers; especially ones who have never sung at the Met before. We are human beings and are striving to sing at the highest level for you and ourselves. Our intentions are truly coming from that desire and we need encouragement from our audiences to continue to do exactly that. We don’t want to disappoint you- we want to grow as much as we can from our last performance and be the best servants to the music and the audience as best as we can in THAT moment. Even if it’s not perfect…we strive for exactly what you’re wanting from us every single day of our lives…can you imagine how much weight that is to carry? Again, we are human 🤷🏽‍♀️ unfortunately 😂 Anyhow, sending this message with good vibes. And yes, it’s the real me :) all the best!

Oh, one more thing. If you want to give constructive criticism, I totally get that...I do find your comments teetering on the side of "bullying" and you know, it actually makes me disregard anything you have to write when you come across that way. An incredible level of this kind of art form deserves a greater level of communication and sharing, no? :) my own personal thoughts :)
