I understand the confusion about all the other ships, but Merthur is SO obvious. Like, the deep exchanged looks, risking their lives for each other, valuing each other, caring... And in his last moments Arthur literally begs Merlin to hold him because that's the moment all barriers come crushing down, all the pretentious "I don't do hugs" vanishes, he just wants to be hold by the most important person in his life. He doesn't mention Gwen AT ALL, no "tell Gwen I love her", nothing- instead, he thanks Merlin, strokes his hair and tries to smile to comfort him. All that matters to him in that moment is Merlin. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a moment of pure love, especially if you compare it to Tristan and Isolde. Love beyond measure.
