Sai actually originate from all over Asia including India and Indonesian mainly and are thought to have come to Okinawa and eventually over to Japan, and converted to Jitte for Police use, with the spread of Hinduism and Buddhism. Even though they have come from across Asia they are known today as a Traditional Japanese Kobudo weapon. There aren't many styles train with them these days, although you may find the occasional Karate class or Ninjutsu school teaching technique with Sai.

The Sai was never a farming tool, the Sai was used for law enforcement, similar to a jitte and a batton
