When I read the first book I thought, not bad. Name of the wind in space type story. Then I read the second book and things got more interesting. I’m on book 5 (Ashes of Man) now. So far things just keep getting better. Yes I am binging this series. No regrets.
I read Empire of Silence over the summer of 2024 and then got distracted with other books. You have just reminded me of how much I loved that book and that I need to get back to this series. I had forgotten you were doing the whole series as a buddy read over on discord. I feel that people entering and exiting (and sometimes re-entering) one's life is a very normal human experience, and if I were telling a friend my own story, it would sound a lot like this. And we know Hadrian is going to live a long, long time so, from his point of view, there are a lot of people he meets briefly that affect him but he never sees again.
I'm very happy to hear that you liked Empire of Silence, good news, the next books are even better. I'm caught up with the series and I love it,more than Red Rising actually.
Minor spoilers. I enjoyed the book at the beginning but when he got to Emesh the pacing slowed down too much for me and a lot of the sections felt boring to me. But the last 80 or so pages in my edition of the book were great and what I was wanting from the start.
Oh man, you have just embarked on the greatest Space Opera ever written. Sun Eater is one of those series where, if it suits your tastes its an immediate top 3 series of all time, if not your favorite. It certainly is for me. And liking Empire of Silence is a big indicator of that, considering that there are people who don't like Empire of Silence, push on with the series, and end up absolutely loving it. I am so excited for your review of Howling Dark, because I always say: Finishing Howling Dark is the moment where Sun Eater gets from having your attention to becoming your obsession, and you will not be able to stop. Lastly, I will quote the Dune Part 2 trailer: You are not prepared for what is to come!
I think they don't delve into the Cat stuff more because it's a story told by Hadrian and Cat is one of the few times he's been actually emotionally vulnerable and damaged by a person so he doesn't want to retread that. Maybe it also would break his mystique he's built in world as well. I think it makes sense for his character to gloss over the less glamorous stuff in a autobiography.
After having read the first two books I'm conflicted about this series. I understand why people appreciate it but the way Ruocchio homages his main influences rubs me a lot. Particularly having read The Book of the New Sun beforehand, there are parts of Empire of Silence that became borderline unreadable to me. Also, it doesn't help that Hadrian is particularly unlikeable and his inner monologue drags at times. But I'll carry on and read Demon in White to assess why it's loved as the best in the series so far...
I love this book. Pieces of Vorkosigan, Deathstalker and The Stars My Destination. Better than Red Rising not as good as Hyperion and I hate framing narratives 🤦♀️😳😬
I'm 80% into the book and I'm finding Hadrian super obnoxious. I'm thinking i probably I won't continue the series but let's see what the last 20% brings.
I have finished the book 3 weeks ago and I am 75% of the second book. I don't see that much an improvement ,the story got more interesting ,but the prose crashed . I fill 70% of the text is Hadrian moping around ,or philosophising or talking to himself. The book can be cut 50% and will be better. It put me in a reading slump and if I continue with the series it will not be soon.

Great review! So excited to hear your thoughts on the next books.
I didn't think Empire of Silence itself really met the hype of the Suneater series, but I'm still excited to continue as I suspect it will pick up
Let’s gooooo, I can’t wait to dive into Howling Dark because I’ve heard it’s got cosmic horror vibes
I'm here for some cosmic horror vibes!
Me too 😛
It’s… interesting. 😉 about to start book 3!

This book is incredible. The only thing I would say is that this book it is not for new readers

A very good point. Love this
So far it’s one of the best series I have ever read and I’m only at the end of Demon in White.
I have only read the first book and I enjoyed it. I heard it just gets better, so its a series I will continue.
Finally! Welcome to the Red Company!
Honoured to be here 🫡
Yes
Sounds good, I might just read it.

What a terribly, terribly written book. You should be ashamed to be shilling for this piece of total crap.
