Hohner "Electronium A" from 1952

This short clip of a newsreel shows, as part of a German industrial fair in 1952, a newly developed electronic musical instrument by Hohner.

The Hohner Electronium A was a monophonic, electronic keyboard instrument in an accordion-like format. It has been manufactured in a vacuum tube version since 1952 and was built in semiconductor technology from 1958 onwards. The Strasbourg engineer René Seybold was its inventor whereas the Hohner GmbH Trossingen manufactured and marketed the instrument.
The Electronium A was employed for many years in different versions by accordion orchestras. It is still in the inventory of many orchestras but rarely used as a solo instrument, since it does not have a bass section and is playable only in a single tone mode. It does, however, enrich the orchestral sound spectrum with its electronic voices.
Meanwhile, especially the tube versions of this instrument are rare and thus an object of desire for collectors.

Dieser kurze Beitrag der Wochenschau zeigt im Rahmen einer Deutschen Industriemesse von 1952 ein neu entwickeltes, elektronisches Musikinstrument der Firma Hohner.
Das Hohner Electronium A war ein monophones, elektronisches Tasteninstrument im Akkordeonformat. Es wurde seit 1952 in Röhren- und ab 1958 in Halbleitertechnik produziert. Konstrukteur war der Straßburger Ingenieur René Seybold. Die Hohner GmbH in Trossingen fertigte und vertrieb das Instrument.
Das Electronium A kam in unterschiedlichen Versionen über viele Jahre hinweg in Akkordeonorchestern zur Anwendung. Noch heute ist es im Bestand vieler Orchester. Da es keinen Bassteil besitzt und nur einstimmig spielbar ist, wird es kaum als Solo-Instrument eingesetzt. Es stellt aber mit seinen elektronischen Stimmen eine Bereicherung des Orchester-Klangspektrums dar.
Mittlerweile sind vor allem die Röhrenversionen dieses Instrumentes selten und werden daher gerne von Sammlern gekauft.

I think you controlled the volume by moving the bellows. Seems a little awkward, but who knows. It was moving the rig (amplifier/"Tone Generator" and speaker) that led these to fail, except in the pro market where they could afford an extra roadie to move them.
