ये पूरा मामला तब शुरू हुआ था जब बीती 27 मई को नूपुर शर्मा ने एक निजी चैनल के डिबेट में हिस्सा लिया था. टीवी डिबेट के दौरान नुपूर शर्मा ने कथित तौर पर पैगंबर मुहम्मद के खिलाफ कुछ अपमानजनक टिप्पणी कर दी थी. इसके बाद ट्विटर पर नूपुर की वीडियो वायरल हो गई और उन पर पैगंबर का अपमान करने का आरोप लगाया. वहीं इसी बीच नवीन कुमार जिंदल ने एक जून को पैगंबर मोहम्मद (Prophet Muhammad) के बारे में एक ट्वीट किया था. इसके बाद से उनकी आलोचना हो रही थी.
