You’re a good man mate for taking the time to make a video like this! I’m sure it’s helping a lot of people out there that are pretty clueless when it comes to this thing!! Top tip - release the handbrake so you can lower the rear axle!!! Best advice you gave your viewers mate.
I plan on doing my rear shocks and springs, not the same type of vehicle, but this so far, looks to be the closest in rear suspension. Thanks for making this video.
here's a tip that I learned with coil spring replacements, use a big C- clamp to compress the spring a bit and it slides right in. Slowly release the clamp until the spring is seated. it was easier to do that for me rather than pull the axel down shimmy. just make sure you're super careful when releasing the clamp otherwise the spring will pop out and bust you in the face. that never feels good lol
its just too dangerous, some cars would have the springs under such load that should they pop out, the jagged edge is going to go straight through any fleshy human part in the way. You could rip your face off if it is near
It looks so easy to change the rear springs which what I'm going to do with my car, also save me money in labour cost, even I could get someone to fit them for £40 quid. Not bad really. But watching your videos as it give good idears what tools to use, how to do the job. Like to see more on how to repair or replace parts for corsa E, great idears .
Informative video with no background noise. Have to change a broken rear spring on my 2012 Meriva B. Had similar problem on a Vectra C Vx springs are made from Munkeymetal.
Magnificent video :) (Just like someone else said, a bit of commentary would have be awesome. Would love to see more Astra repair vids. My spring sheared today almost exactly like your one, time to don the work gloves)
Ha, I love the fact you ALSO own a ghetto scissor jack with no hook. 11/10 for killing gloves too. Proper video. Big ups. Off to do my Astra thanks bud
Good video! My girlfriends car has just failed the MOT on the rear coil spring! I will definitely be giving it a go myself. I Might aswell change both!
can't believe how simple it is....thought there will be more to it.....thanks allot for this, I was wondering can i use spring compressers instead of undoing the lower nut on the shock?
Very helpful as I have to do this job on the Mrs's car tomorrow, I presume the shock just unbolts from the top similarly to the bottom? I'm changing both sets of shocks and springs but based on your video I should be able to manage it all in a couple of hours on my own :)
+Eklipze3k I only needed to undo the lower bolt on the shocks so I don't remember how the top was connected. Good luck with the job and thanks for watching.
extremly helpfull video :D my girlfriend's tigra just failed mot over broken spring , I assume it won't take long to replace....and much cheaper than going to garage ;)
How do you work out which way up the new spring goes? The original one(Vauxhall) has a 3.5cm(ID) coil at the top and a 4.6cm(ID) coil at the bottom on mine.
I tried to best match the one I was taking off and more importantly made sure the coil was sitting in place securely so there is no chance of slipping out of place, I hope this helps.
How you figured out that the spring has gone bad? What symptoms? I have also something bad in rear. But i dont know what it is. Rear left wheel has strange little vertical play (only vertical) but as soon as i shake it more, play goes away. Turn the wheel and play is back. Maybe bad shocks or bushings. I have Corsa C, 2002
+jw200 car was making noise on speed bumps and eventually one day a piece of the spring fell off, so I knew I had to change it. About your car, as I am not a mechanic I am sorry I cannot help you.
I wonder if you can help me, my Vauxhall corsa x reg's rear wheels. The drivers side rear wheel is perfectly straight but the passenger rear wheel is tubing the shock obsorber, in at the top and out at the bottom. On inspection I removed the wheel and did a quick check but couldn't see any reason for the angle. The car drives well and no signs of wobble or buckle, can you show me what to do about this?. Thanks.
Hi dude, I was wondering what size that bolts which fasten the strut could be, a E18 maybe? If yes, are both the upper and lower bolt that fasten the strut the same size? Or is the upper one a E20? Thanks in advance.
If you were to charge to do this job, how much would you charge? My Corsa needs this doing, I understand its a small job, however im suspecting the guy doing it might, just make the bill, that little bit more.
I once had one of the springs on this Corsa changed by a mobile mechanic and he charged me £55 including the price of the spring. That was a few years ago and then I decided to have a go myself, I paid £19 for each spring and I changed both of them as it is advisable to change them in pair. I hope this helps.
+dennis hopkins Mine used to make a noise when going over a bump until one day a piece of the spring fell off, that's when I realized I needed a new one fitted. As I am not a mechanic I cannot tell you what could be causing it, you might have to have a closer look for any sign of breakage or loose parts.
I changed all my shocks and springs about 2 years ago mate including the tol mounts and that but i have to say the front was making a kinda nocking rubbery noise when i drove or pushed down the front so i took it apart and put the old top mount back on becouse the new one seemed to tight and wached a vid on here how to position the top mount and now its noise free. So i thought maybe mounts or bushes on rear axle or something but you right i deffo need to get under and have someone bounce it and listen. Come to think of it when i put the shocks and that on the mount did not seem like thay fitted as good as the old ones but dont have old ones so cant put them back joke is only 1 back spring broke but i changed it all. You no that saying if its not broke dont fix it well i should have took more notice of that one lol thanks tho man
+dennis hopkins I changed both springs on mine even though only one was broken because it is advisable to do so. Any way good luck with finding the problem and thanks for watching.
Thanks,I did this over a year ago but one thing is for sure, I don't get the annoying noise when driving over the bumps and the ride is much smoother. Also I changed both rear coils even though only one was broken.
Your brave using a scissor jack, but if that's all you got then it's all you got. but great upload tho :) i got a zafira GSI and it looks like it's the same.
Hi don't give up your day job the handbrake has nothing to do with with the springs I'm a barman and I know that I hope you don't get anyone hurt with that video
Eh what are you on about!? It makes sense to lower the tension on the handbrake cable that's attached to the brake drum which is still on the axle. Maybe you should be the one sticking to your day/night job :/
Just failed my MOT on this! This has to rank as one of the clearest car repair videos I've ever seen. Really good! Thanks!
+Steve Smith Thanks and you are welcome, glad it helped.

This video was a real help, changed the rear coil springs on my Astra estate today using this video, thank you
You are welcome, glad it helped.

I did try the clamp method but it was sipping which could be very dangerous.

Easy to follow, very good. This will save me a lorra cash so thanks very much for the video..👍
I too own Opel Corsa . I was planning to replace the rear coil springs.
Your Upload helped me a lot dude :-)
Glad it helped, thanks for watching.

good video. Clear video. Good shots of step-by-step directions for replacement. Thanks!
sailorpluto315 You are welcome and thanks for watching.
I've just been quoted £219 to replace the 2 rear springs on my vectra by my garage, this will save me £150!! Cheers!
Glad the video helped, Thanks for watching
Just fitted mine with the help of this video alone! Sterlin mate, thank a bunch!! :D
Glad it helped, thanks for watching.
massoud147 Nope, thank you!
One of my rear coils snapped too. Great help with that video. Many thanks
You're welcome, thanks for watching
massoud147 Thanks man you help me out

+Steven Cook You are welcome.
Great video, I'm gonna change the spring on my opel astra this very day. Wish me luck
Good luck and thanks for watching.
Magnificent video :)
(Just like someone else said, a bit of commentary would have be awesome. Would love to see more Astra repair vids. My spring sheared today almost exactly like your one, time to don the work gloves)
Glad you liked it , thanks for watching.
Thanks alot, im about to switch springs in my suzuki vitara and i think i got the idea now how to do it, thanks again
Maxamius2 You are welcome, thanks for watching and good luck with yours.
About to change my front ones since my offside spring sheared in the exact same way.
Ha, I love the fact you ALSO own a ghetto scissor jack with no hook. 11/10 for killing gloves too. Proper video. Big ups. Off to do my Astra thanks bud
Thanks. I finally found the hook and also have bought a trolley jack and a pack of gloves. Good luck with your repair.

floppy041187 It is advisable to change them in pairs. Good luck and thanks for watching.
massoud147 yeah I've just done them both. All done in an hour! Wish all jobs are this easy!
floppy041187 I know what you mean :-)

+Protab Ali You are welcome and about the spring compressor I don't know, I've never used one.

im curious as to why that suspension arm moved so easily with the other wheel on the floor.

Marcus Lane I am not a mechanic so I cannot help you, sorry. I am a DIYer and apart from this job I've only carried out minor repairs on the Corsa.
Fair enough
near the springs junction I have a crack. Is it possible to weld up?
I am not a mechanic or welder, sorry I cannot help.
It’s possible but certainly not recommended. No reputable garage will weld that!
Hi dude, I was wondering what size that bolts which fasten the strut could be, a E18 maybe? If yes, are both the upper and lower bolt that fasten the strut the same size? Or is the upper one a E20? Thanks in advance.
+Dixon J.G. I don't know the bolt size, sorry. I only unscrewed the lower bolt and then reused it. All I know I is the socket size which was 7/16.
Ok, thanks anyway.
Dixon J.G. You are welcome.
good video. thanks for uploading this.
You are welcome and thanks for watching.
Handy vid.... Would this be the same on an opel zafira?
I don't know about zafira , I have never owned one
Would have been even better if you have talked as you worked your way through. Excellent demonstration. Thanks
I agree with you maybe in the future, thank you for your comment and for watching.
Great help many thanks for the video.
Keith Broadband You are welcome and thanks for watching.
brilliant, you can see exactly what to do
Thanks.
Cool vid!
+Dixon J.G. Thanks.
is it ok to just replace one spring or should it be done in pairs or all 4?
It is advisable to change them in pairs, I did, but it is up to you.
good video . and no special tools thanks.
You are welcome and thanks for watching.

mine is making a kinda like a scraping noise at the back left when i go over bumpsor even when i push the back down what could this be mate

This video also applicable for Mk4 Astra G.
Is it applicable for a Corsa B please?
and i think its very similar to a ffiat panda 100 hp
Very helpful indeed.
+Rungano Washington Gwanzura Thanks for watching.
Looks like you should be getting rid of some of that rust for your next job.
What size socket are you using?
It was a while ago when I did this job but I checked it now and it seems that 7/16 seem to fit best.
massoud147 Excellent vid, thanks
desaldinho1 You are welcome, thanks for watching.
And buy a decent trolley jack as it would make things so much easier for you.
Anyone know what the stock height of the springs are ? Front and rear
what size is the bold that holds the shock in place?
I don't know the size, sorry, I just took the bolt out to be able to change the spring and then replaced the same bolt.
Black nitrile gloves - £5.40 per box of 100 from gsf :)
Do you need a torx socket?
+shelby tia No, just normal socket size 7/16.
+massoud147 naaah you do need a torx
do you think this would work on a insignia ?
I don't know about Insignia as I've only worked on my Corsa.
What type of bolt is that ? And what do i need to take it off ?
I think it is a torx bolt so ideally you need a torx socket but I managed with a 7/16 socket and some WD40.
Great video thanks m8 .
You are welcome.
You should also tell people that road springs as with shock absorbers should be replaced in pairs.
no need unless you are a dealer and need to make money
It's not a must but I would do it in pairs.. It's not THAT much work and springs are not really expensive..
Respect and thank you for your video. ;-)
You're welcome, thanks for watching.
Nice job. Is the ride smoother now, i.e do you feel less of the bumps?
Thanks,I did this over a year ago but one thing is for sure, I don't get the annoying noise when driving over the bumps and the ride is much smoother. Also I changed both rear coils even though only one was broken.
Your brave using a scissor jack, but if that's all you got then it's all you got. but great upload tho :) i got a zafira GSI and it looks like it's the same.
marcus ralph Thanks for watching.
you should get a trolley or bottle jack easyer
+dennis hopkins I have both of them now so next time it will be easier. Thanks for watching.
thanx
WHERE ARE THE AXLE STANDS
Didn't have any hence two car jacks and a wheel, I do have axle stands now.
Great cheers, just can’t see point of gloves 😂😂😂
You are welcome. I only needed to wash one thumb afterwards😁
🤣🤣🤣🤣
would have been a lot easier and safer using a couple of trolley jacks :)
I did not have any then but I do have one now.
dean fuller I'm quite impressed by the use of the scissor jacks! I've never had good luck with them, and I always fear they will topple.
exactly.... you never see kwik fit using one do you.
After all....please replace both side of the coil spring.
I did change both coil springs but only filmed one.

dariunas loool your comment had me in bits 😂 you are totally right though.
If is my car like that, change the car,
Is this the same for the Astra Coupe? (2001 model)
Sorry, I don't know about astra but looking down the comments I think some one has done an astra.
